In situ nasal gel loaded with Lactoferrin-Coated Brexpiprazole nanostructured lipid carriers for Schizophrenia: Cross-Species validation in Ketamine-Induced rat and zebrafish models.

Brexpiprazole (BXP), a third-generation antipsychotic, exhibits limited brain delivery following oral administration due to first-pass metabolism and blood-brain barrier constraints. To overcome these limitations, a Lactoferrin (Lf)-functionalized BXP-loaded nanostructured lipid carrier (Lf-BXP-NLC) incorporated into a thermoresponsive in situ nasal gel was developed to enable sustained and receptor-mediated nose-to-brain transport. The optimized formulation demonstrated nanoscale particle size (<200 nm), narrow polydispersity, high entrapment efficiency (∼88%), and physiological gelation temp

Pathologic abnormalities of deep placentation in the great obstetrical syndromes: Implications for understanding the pathophysiology, risk assessment in early pregnancy, and personalized prevention.

The concept of the Great Obstetrical Syndromes was introduced to explain the unique nature of obstetrical disease, which differs fundamentally from disorders in other areas of medicine. These syndromes, including preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, fetal death, and spontaneous preterm birth, represent clinical endpoints rather than single diseases and share defining characteristics: they arise from multiple etiologies, have a prolonged subclinical phase, involve the fetus as an active participant, are adaptive in nature, and result from complex genetic and environmental interactions betwee

A Blind Spot in the Algorithm: Assessing Bias in Artificial Intelligence-Generated Images of Plastic Surgery Patients.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) models can inherit biases from their training data, a phenomenon documented in other fields, including the corporate and legal realms. This study is the first to investigate such biases in AI-generated images of plastic surgery patients. METHODS: Three AI image generators were used to generate 2600 images using the prompt "A photo of the face of a ___ patient," encompassing various plastic surgery patient groups. Images were independently assessed by 3 blinded raters for demographic factors and compared with real-world patient demographics via Fisher e

Post adversity changes in nigro-striatal dopamine: A mechanism for anxiety induced exacerbated innate repetitive behaviors.

Anxiety exacerbates symptoms in various psychiatric disorders. In conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or Tourette syndrome, anxiety intensifies stereotypic and repetitive behaviors. Rodent self-grooming, a structured, repetitive innate behavior, serves as an effective rodent platform for studying these behaviors in neuropsychiatric research. Anxiety is also linked to altered functioning of the dopamine (DA) system, particularly within the substantia-nigra pars compacta (SNc), the main DA source to the dorsal striatum through the nigro-striatal pathway. Striatal modulation by

INTRODUCTION: Shao-Ma-Zhi-Jing Granules (SMZJ) is clinically used for Tourette syndrome (TS). This study aimed to investigate the regulatory effects of SMZJ on the immune system and gut microbiota of the 3,3'-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN)-induced TS rat model. METHODS: Immune-related indicators were detected by flow cytometry, western blotting, ELISA and qRT-PCR. Gut microbiota composition was analyzed via 16S rDNA sequencing, and Spearman analysis was performed to assess the correlation between gut microbiota and immune function. RESULTS: SMZJ suppressed IDPN-induced stereotypical behaviors.

The Challenges of Compassion Bias in Clinical Decision-Making: A Case-Based Ethical Analysis.

Bias in clinical decision-making is commonly understood as arising from negative stereotypes or cognitive shortcuts that undermine patient-centered care. Less attention has been paid to forms of bias that emerge from clinicians' well-intentioned efforts to alleviate suffering. This article introduces the concept of compassion bias, defined as a distortion in clinical judgment that occurs when empathy and a desire to avoid harm unintentionally constrain objectivity, patient autonomy, or the range of treatment options offered. We present the case of a young woman with advanced neurologic decline

Sexual intimacy after breast cancer: A systematic review of qualitative studies on women's and partners' experiences in dating and romantic relationships.

Body changes related to breast cancer treatment are associated with body image concerns and sexual and intimacy difficulties that adversely affect quality of life, yet remain frequently unaddressed by healthcare professionals. Although existing reviews have examined these challenges among women with breast cancer, none have synthesised qualitative evidence incorporating partners' perspectives or spanning different intimate partnerships, including dating and emerging relationships. This systematic review aimed to synthesise qualitative evidence on how breast cancer and its treatment shape sexua

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia often arises by a multiclonal selection process.

Although chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is diagnosed by identifying a circulating B-cell clone that exceeds 5x103/μL, additional distinct clones (ADC) have been identified in various studies. Notably, the numbers of ADC documented in these studies has increased as the various technologies evolved. To better define the frequency and the characteristics of ADC in CLL, we used a next-generation sequencing platform that affords high sequencing depth along with steps that limit overcounting to analyze IGHV-IGHD-IGHJ gene rearrangements in circulating CD5+ B cells from 57 patients. Notably, all

A deficiency screen of the X chromosome for Rap1 GTPase dominant interacting genes in Drosophila border cell migration.

Collective cell migration is critical to embryonic development, wound healing, and the immune response, but also drives tumor dissemination. Understanding how cell collectives coordinate migration in vivo has been a challenge, with potential therapeutic benefits that range from addressing developmental defects to designing targeted cancer treatments. The small GTPase Rap1 has emerged as a regulator of both embryogenesis and cancer cell migration. How active Rap1 coordinates downstream signaling functions required for coordinated collective migration is poorly understood. Drosophila border cell

Network Structure of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms in Older Asian Patients With Depressive Disorders: Findings From REAP-AD3.

OBJECTIVE: The clinical presentation of depressive disorders might be influenced by age, and its diagnosis and treatment can be affected by ageism-related bias. A network analysis can reveal symptom patterns unrecognized by the reductionistic approach. Therefore, this study explores the network structure of depression and anxiety symptoms in older Asian patients with depressive disorders and examines age-related differences in the context of ageism. METHODS: We used data from the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Patterns for Antidepressants, Phase 3 study and included 2,785 psychia

[An exploration of family functioning where one parent has Borderline Personality Disorder].

Introduction Being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) as a parent can undermine the overall functioning of the family, particularly the exercise of parental and marital roles. However, current knowledge about the general functioning of families in which a parent has such a diagnosis remains fragmented. It is therefore essential to better understand this reality in order to equip health and social service professionals who support these individuals and their families. Objectives The main objective of this study was to describe how each member of the parental couple with at lea

Museum-based sleep education: development and evaluation of pop-up exhibits for children and families.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Museums are informal learning environments that attract people of all ages, but their potential for providing sleep education is underexplored. We developed interactive pop-up exhibits on sleep and investigated whether they effectively engaged museum visitors, improved sleep-related attitudes, and broadened perceptions of scientists. METHODS: Activities were prototyped from 2016 to 2022, and then systematically evaluated across 11 events at a medium-sized museum. Pop-up exhibits included face-to-face interactions with sleep-research trainees, professional signage, video disp

Expanding the social pathways linking self-perceptions of aging to health: the role of friendships.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study investigates how friendships serve as a social pathway underlying the health effects of self-perceptions of aging (SPA). We adopt a conceptual framework integrating stereotype embodiment theory and the differential investment of resources (DIRe) model. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This study used longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), which tracks a nationally representative sample of 9,098 participants aged 50 and older over 8 years (Time 1: 2008/10, Time 2: 2012/14, Time 3: 2016/18). Vestibular patients generate more regular head movements than healthy individuals during gaze-stabilization exercises.

The vestibular system is vital for maintaining stable vision during daily activities. When peripheral vestibular input is lost, patients initially experience impaired gaze stability due to reduced effectiveness of the vestibular-ocular-reflex pathway. To aid rehabilitation, patients are often prescribed gaze-stabilization exercises during which they make self-initiated active head movements. Analyzing statistical pattern of sequences of stereotyped behaviors to characterize degrees of randomness or repeatability has proven to be a powerful approach for diagnosing disease states, yet this appro

Main Sequence of Human Luminance-evoked Pupil Dynamics.

Pupil responses are commonly used to provide insight into visual perception, autonomic control, cognition, and various brain disorders. However, making inferences from pupil data can be complicated by nonlinearities in pupil dynamics and variability within and across individuals, which challenge the assumptions of linearity or group-level homogeneity required for common analysis methods. In this study, we evaluated luminance evoked pupil dynamics in young healthy adults (n = 10, M:F = 5:5, age 19-25 years) by identifying nonlinearities, variability, and conserved relationships across individua
