Short and long-term trajectories of the post COVID-19 condition: Results from the EuCARE POSTCOVID study.

BACKGROUND: Post COVID-19 condition (PCC) affects 10-40% of patients and is characterized by persisting symptoms at ≥ 4 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Symptoms can last 7 or even more months. How long PCC persists and any changes in its clinical phenotypes over time require further investigation. We investigated PCC trajectories and factors associated with PCC persistence. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included both hospitalized COVID-19 patients and outpatients from February 2020 to June 2023, who underwent at least one follow-up visit after acute infection at San Paolo Hospital, University of

Gender Disparities in Neurobehavioral Symptoms and the Role of Post-Traumatic Symptoms in US Service Members Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Women are more directly involved in combat operations today than ever before, currently making up 18.6% of officers and 16.8% of enlisted personnel in the United States military. However, women continue to be under-represented in military research. Studies that do consider gender differences in traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes have shown that women report significantly more post-concussive symptoms than men. Conclusions for true gender differences related to TBI are hard to make without controlling for non-TBI factors. The effects previously identified in the literature may be an artifact

Prevalence and risk factors for persistent symptoms after COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Long-term physical and mental persistent symptoms after COVID-19 represent a growing global public health concern. However, there remains a substantial knowledge gap regarding their prevalence and risk factors. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence and risk factors for persistent symptoms after COVID-19. METHODS OF DATA SYNTHESIS: We used a random-effects model to pool persistent symptom prevalence and risk ratios comparing COVID-19 patients with non-COVID-19 individuals. DATA SOURCES: Electronic databases were searched for studies published from December 2019 to January 2023.

Incidence of postconcussion symptoms in psychiatric diagnostic groups, mild traumatic brain injury, and comorbid conditions.

The constellation of physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms, collectively known as postconcussion syndrome (PCS), is not uniquely associated with concussion, making the etiology of chronic postconcussion symptoms controversial. The current study compared percentages of individuals meeting symptom-based criteria for PCS in a population-based sample of veterans composed of subgroups with various psychiatric diagnoses, a history of mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), and healthy controls. Participants were identified from 4462 randomly sampled male U.S. Army veterans who served during the Vi

Postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder in a fetal high-risk maternity hospital in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a maternity hospital for fetal high-risk pregnancies and to identify vulnerable subgroups. This was a cross-sectional study at a fetal high-risk maternity hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a sample of 456 women who had given birth at this hospital. The Trauma History Questionnaire and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist were used to screen for lifetime traumatic events and PTSD symptoms, respectively. Overall prevalence of PTSD was 9.4%. Higher PTSD prevalence was asso

The impact of core belief disruption on posttraumatic growth and PTSD in healthcare workers: examining the mediating effect of rumination.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are often exposed to traumatic events and as a result, they may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental illnesses. The prevalence of these issues is high among healthcare professionals. Positive transformation (i.e., PTG) can emerge after struggles related to a stressful life event. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study utilizing structural equation modeling (SEM), a sample of Iranian healthcare workers (nurses and pre-hospital emergency personnel from Ardabil) completed a battery of self-report questionnaires. These measures included a

Tailored psychotherapy and AI-enhanced contingency management for co-occurring disorders in cannabis use disorder: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use disorder (CUD) commonly co-occurs with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), resulting in poorer outcomes and underscoring the need for tailored interventions. Contingency management (CM) is one of the most effective behavioral treatments for substance use disorders, and emerging applications of artificial intelligence (AI) may enhance CM by predicting relapse risk and personalizing incentives. This review evaluates evidence on integrated interventions for CUD with co-occurring disorders and the

Bridging the heart-mind divide: Psychiatric implementation of the 2025 ESC mental-CVD consensus.

The 2025 ESC (European Society of Cardiology) Clinical Consensus Statement on mental health and cardiovascular disease is a milestone for psychiatry as much as for cardiology. It recognizes mental disorders as major determinants of cardiovascular (CV) risk and explicitly calls for collaboration with the European Psychiatric Association (EPA). In parallel, the EPA Presidential Action Plan and its "Whole Person Health" task force promote lifestyle‑based, multimorbidity-focused care. From a psychiatric perspective, the challenge is now to translate these frameworks into everyday practice. In this

Trauma re-experiencing episodes during esketamine treatment in patients with treatment-resistant depression and comorbid PTSD: a retrospective case series.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe and frequent affection that is highly comorbid to major depressive disorder. Comorbid PTSD and depression increase the risk of treatment-resistant depression (TRD), with a high risk of functional impairment and suicide. Esketamine nasal spray is a recent validated treatment for TRD, but its efficacy on comorbid TRD-PTSD remains insufficiently documented. In particular, it is unknown whether traumatic re-experiencing may occur during esketamine treatment and if so, how it influences clinical outcomes. Objectives: Our objective was to d

Postpartum-onset PTSD: a DSM-6 nosologic priority.

Childbirth-related PTSD is a population-level postpartum mental health concern that remains under-recognized due to limited routine PTSD screening and symptom overlap with postpartum depression and anxiety. The condition is associated with impaired mother-infant bonding and is supported by converging biological evidence consistent with PTSD in other trauma-exposed populations. We propose that DSM-6 add a PTSD timing specifier, "with postpartum onset", defined as the onset of PTSD symptoms within 4 weeks after delivery following a childbirth event that satisfies DSM Criterion A. A full PTSD dia

Effectiveness of the Common Elements Treatment Approach for mental and behavioural health outcomes among women struggling to remain adherent to HIV treatment and who have experienced intimate partner violence in South Africa: secondary outcomes from a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV in South Africa are among the highest globally. IPV is associated with a range of adverse mental health and HIV outcomes. The Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA) is a transdiagnostic, evidence-based intervention delivered by lay providers. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of CETA to active attention control in reducing IPV, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use among women at risk of poor HIV outcomes who have experienced IPV. METHODS: Women living with HIV with an unsuppressed viral load

Posttraumatic stress disorder in disaster-exposed youth: examining diagnostic concordance and model fit using ICD-11 and DSM-5 criteria.

BACKGROUND: Competing definitions of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been proposed by ICD-11 and DSM-5; it is unclear which diagnostic model works best for children and adolescents. Although other studies have predicted the impact of these models by approximating the criteria using older measures, this study advances the research by comparing measures designed to assess ICD-11 and DSM-5 criteria in hurricane-exposed youth. This study evaluates ICD-11 and DSM-5 (both the standard and preschool-age) diagnostic models by identifying diagnostic rates, evaluating diagnostic concordance, i

The Effect of Ketamine-Assisted Group Therapy on Treatment-Resistant Mental Health Conditions in Firefighters: A Prospective Observational Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: Firefighters display elevated risk for diagnoses of mental health illnesses. Psychedelic-assisted therapies show promise in the treatment of clinically challenging conditions. This observational case series analyzed data from firefighters with mental health diagnoses who participated in a 12-week ketamine-assisted group therapy treatment plan. METHODS: Questionnaire scores (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment-7, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, The Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist -5, Brief Inventory of Psychosocial Functioning ) collected throughout the program were scor

Trauma appraisals in the first month after sexual trauma differentially predict subsequent mental and physical health sequelae.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual trauma is highly prevalent, particularly in women. Cognitions play a critical role in trauma recovery and may predict chronic mental and physical health difficulties. However, existing studies of cognitions following trauma have focused largely on global meanings (i.e., general beliefs, values, and goals) rather than on situational appraisals (i.e., understanding of the trauma or its impact). We aimed to determine the extent to which situational appraisals within the first month of experiencing sexual trauma differentially predict subsequent mental and physical health. METHO

Volumetric Differences of Thalamic Nuclei Are Associated With Posttrauma Psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Previous investigations of whole thalamus and thalamic nuclei volumes in posttrauma psychopathology have been sparse and limited in scope and have yielded inconsistent results. To address this, volumetric estimates of whole thalamus and thalamic nuclei were obtained from structural brain magnetic resonance imaging scans from 2058 participants across 20 worldwide sites in the ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) working group. METHODS: Thalamic volumes were compared in trauma-exposed participants with PTSD (n = 238), m

Prenatal maternal PTSD as a risk factor for offspring ADHD: A register-based Swedish cohort study of 553 766 children and their mothers.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is highly heritable, though environmental factors also play a role. Prenatal maternal stress is suggested to be one such factor, including exposure to highly distressing events that could lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study is to investigate whether prenatal maternal PTSD is associated with offspring ADHD. METHOD: A register-based retrospective cohort study linking 553 766 children born in Sweden during 2006-2010 with their biological parents. Exposure: Prenatal PTSD. Outcome: Offspring ADHD. Logistic

Prevalence and clinical correlates of dissociative symptoms in people with complex PTSD: Is complex PTSD a dissociative disorder?

The extent to which complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD) can be conceptualized as a dissociative disorder remains an ongoing debate. This study investigated the prevalence and correlates of dissociative symptoms in people with C-PTSD. We analyzed baseline data from an international randomized controlled trial. A total of 165 intervention seekers who met the ICD-11 criteria for C-PTSD completed standardized self-report measures of trauma, C-PTSD symptoms, dissociative symptoms, depressive symptoms, and work and social impairments. In this sample, only 42.3 % of participants exhibited

Emotional Clarity and Psychopathology in Women Who Have Experienced Physical Intimate Partner Violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a chronic, traumatic stressor related to posttraumatic stress (PTS), depression, and anxiety. As psychological symptoms are exacerbated in those with poor emotional clarity, the present study evaluates the relationship between emotional clarity and PTS, dissociation, depression, and worry in women who experienced at least one instance of physical IPV (n = 88). Hierarchical regression analyses, controlling for childhood trauma, IPV abuse severity, and IPV-related brain injury, found that lack of emotional clarity was significantly related to greater PTS, disso

An open pilot trial of a behavioural intervention to reduce violence by young adults with early psychosis receiving treatment in an early intervention services setting: A protocol.

AIMS: Despite the public health impact of violence among young adults with psychosis, behavioural interventions to reduce the risk of engaging in violence remain rare. For young adults with early psychosis, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-based psychotherapy has efficacy in reducing impairment and improving functioning. However, no CBT-based intervention to reduce violence has been formally adapted for young adults with early psychosis. This protocol outlines the first clinical trial of a behavioural intervention to reduce violence for young adults with early psychosis. This study is set i
