Dentifrices for preventing erosive tooth wear: An in vitro comparative study.

Erosive tooth wear is a progressive condition that compromises enamel structure and requires preventive strategies. This in vitro study aimed to compare the protective effects of fluoride-based dentifrices containing various bioactive agents on sound enamel subjected to simulated erosive-abrasive challenges. Sixty bovine enamel blocks were randomly assigned to five dentifrices containing: bioactive silica + 1100 ppm F- from sodium fluoride (BAS/NaF), 0.454% stannous fluoride (SnF), sodium-calcium phosphosilicate + 1426 ppm F- from sodium fluoride (SCP/NaF), 1100 ppm F- from sodium fluoride (Na

Antibacterial and osteogenic effect of EGCG/HAP/AgNPs composite coating on titanium surface.

Titanium implants are widely used in dental applications; however, their clinical application is still limited by challenges such as bacterial infection and poor osseointegration. In this study, a composite coating consisting of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), hydroxyapatite (HAP), and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was fabricated on the titanium surface to improve its antibacterial activity and osteogenic potential. The coating was prepared via alkali-thermal treatment, followed by EGCG adhesion and subsequent deposition of HAP and AgNPs. Surface characterization confirmed successful constru

Distinct Bioactive Surface Coating Modulates Chronic Toxicity and Recovery Pathways in Silver-Nanoparticle-Exposed Cells.

The use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in biomedical and household products has rapidly increased in recent years. However, the long-term effects of these AgNPs on human health are poorly understood. In this study, AgNPs of approximately the same size were prepared with different surface functionalizations, namely, tyrosine (Tyr), curcumin (Cur), and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). These were used to determine the acute and chronic toxicity on human cells, as well as the effects on oxidative stress, cell adhesion, and cell cycle progression. Additionally, we assessed cell recovery after 24

Fe/N-doped hollow carbon nanozymes for synergistic chemo-photothermal-catalytic therapy via tumor microenvironment remodeling.

The limited penetration and efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents, constrained by the distinctive pathophysiological conditions of the tumor microenvironment (TME), remain a major therapeutic obstacle. In recent years, there has been growing interest in modulating the TME to overcome these barriers, which provides a promising way for enhancing cancer treatment. To address this challenge, a multifunctional nanoparticle system (DOX/FeNHC-PEG) was developed for oxidative stress-augmented triple-modal therapy. The system was constructed by doping Fe3+ ions and N atoms into hollow carbon nanostructur

Fe-POM Anchored on mSiO2-Coated Upconversion Nanoparticles for Cascading Catalytic Nano-Synergistic Therapy.

Traditional tumor treatments have limitations, such as poor targeting and systemic toxicity. Therefore, the development of intelligent nanotheranostic systems is necessary. In this work, we developed a multifunctional core-shell nanocomposite named upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) coated with mesoporous silica and anchored with Fe-substituted polyoxometalate (UCNPs@mSiO2/Fe-POM). This system uses UCNPs as the core for imaging. The core is encapsulated within a mesoporous silica (mSiO2) shell. This shell contains Fe-substituted polyoxometalate (POM, Fe-POM), in which Fe ions are incorporated

Self-lubricating anticoagulant surface (SLACS) mimicking heart valve tissue for improving biocompatibility of artificial blood pumps.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) represents the most advanced modalityof extracorporeal life support. The centrifugal pump head, a key component in direct contact with blood, demands excellent blood compatibility to ensure optimal performance. To address this requirement, a self-lubricating anticoagulant surface (SLACS) was fabricated on a roughened stainless steel substrate through physical adhesion and chemical bonding using a dimethylsiloxane gel (S-PDMS). In the blood slidingexperiment, blood remained on 316 l stainless steel for 6 s but slid off the SLACS in just 0.64 s, demonst

Study on the preparation of iron-incorporated tannin films and their dual synergistic photothermal-Fenton reaction for osteosarcoma suppression.

The intelligent responsive drug delivery systems show great promise for precision cancer therapy. However, despite the development of numerous antitumor strategies based on drug delivery platforms, their therapeutic efficacy remains generally limited. In this study, we constructed a platform for synergistic photothermal (PTT) and Chemical kinetics therapy (CDT) to inhibit osteosarcoma. For the first time, a composite film of Fe3O4 and tannic (TA) was successfully fabricated using a combined approach of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and low-energy electron beam deposition (EBD). The coordinatio

Quaternary Ammonium-Cu2O Nanocomposite with Synergistic Multimode Antibacterial Action for Eradicating MRSA and Mitigating Resistance Development.

The overuse of antibiotics has accelerated the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, often leading to the failure of conventional antibiotic therapies. However, the development of different classes of antibiotics has lagged significantly behind the spread of bacterial multidrug resistance. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop alternative antibacterial agents or therapeutic strategies that employ diverse antimicrobial mechanisms and exhibit a low propensity for inducing bacterial resistance. In this study, a poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA)-Cu2O nanocomposi

Alkali-heat-treated titania coatings on zirconia implants improves bioactivity and osseointegration.

Zirconia implants are increasingly used in dental applications due to their favorable esthetics, excellent mechanical properties, and good biocompatibility. Nevertheless, the bioinert nature of zirconia limits early osteogenic response and osseointegration, potentially compromising long-term stability. In this study, a uniform titania (TiO2) coating was constructed on zirconia surfaces and subsequently subjected to alkali-heat treatment to further enhance surface bioactivity. The modified samples were systematically characterized in terms of surface morphology and chemistry, roughness and wett

Development of a biodegradable smooth-surface microcarrier for retinal pigment epithelial cell expansion and maturation.

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is essential for the health and function of the retina and, more specifically, the photoreceptors. Hence, the dysfunction of RPE leads to various retinal degeneration diseases. The rising prevalence of these disorders highlights the need for effective, large-scale cell-based therapies, particularly those utilizing stem cell-derived RPE cells. This study presents the development of a biodegradable, smooth surface microcarrier designed to facilitate the expansion and maturation of RPE cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Using a three-di

Modified casein-stabilized amorphous calcium phosphate nanoparticles prevent dental caries by inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans and promoting the remineralization of tooth enamel.

Dental caries, a prevalent oral disease, is caused by acid- producing plaque microorganisms-notably Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans)-which drive enamel demineralization. Current prevention strategies, such as fluoride and chlorhexidine, primarily target planktonic bacteria but exhibit limited efficacy against biofilms and neglect enamel remineralization, thereby reducing their therapeutic efficacy. To address these limitations, we developed dual-functional nanoparticles (AXCP NPs) that can eradicate S. mutans biofilm and promote enamel remineralization. The amphiphilic polymer Arg-XOS-CPP (AXC

Mussel-inspired nanocellulose scaffold for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory coating for clear aligners.

Aesthetic demands in contemporary dentistry have driven the widespread adoption of clear aligners (CAs), yet their polymeric substrates lack intrinsic antibacterial and anti-inflammatory functionality, predisposing the periodontium to inflammation during prolonged wear. Here, we present a multifunctional surface coating for PETG-based CAs, comprising dopamine-grafted TEMPO-oxidized bacterial cellulose nanofibers (TOBC-DA), curcumin (Cur), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), applied via a facile spin-coating process. TOBC-DA serves as a bioadhesive matrix that forms a robust, long-lasting bond with PE

Pickering double emulsions stabilized by acylated cellulose nanocrystals for oral co-delivery of macromolecules and permeation enhancers.

Double emulsions are potential oral delivery systems for the simultaneous administration of hydrophilic drugs and hydrophobic permeation enhancers to enable effective intestinal absorption of macromolecular drugs. Emulsions stabilized by solid particles, i.e., Pickering stabilizers, have shown potential to form gastric-stable emulsions that can protect their cargo from release under gastric conditions. Here, we use acylated cellulose nanocrystals to facilitate the formation of stable double emulsions for intestinal drug delivery. Water-in-oil-in-water double emulsions were obtained by a two-st

Protein corona as a barrier compromises the photothermal antibacterial activity of graphene oxide nanosheets.

As an antibiotic-independent approach, photothermal therapy (PTT) demonstrates significant efficacy in combating bacterial infections. Many nanoscale photothermal agents (nano-PAs), such as graphene-based nanomaterials, MXene and metal-based nanoparticles, have been reported for PTT. However, how protein corona surrounding 2D nano-PAs influences the antibacterial PTT is still unknown. Herein, we used graphene oxide (GO) as a model 2D nano-PA and investigated the effects of bovine serum albumin (BSA) corona on the antibacterial PTT of GO. We found BSA corona enhanced the photothermal effect of

Metformin Nanodelivery System Alleviates Morphine-Induced Analgesic Tolerance via Inhibiting the TXNIP/NLRP3/GSDMD Axis.

Morphine-induced analgesic tolerance limits its clinical use. This study shows that metformin alleviates such tolerance by inhibiting the TXNIP/NLRP3/GSDMD axis, reducing microglial activation and proinflammatory cytokines in CD-1 mice (metformin 200 mg/kg i.p.; morphine 10 mg/kg s.c.) and BV-2 cells (metformin 100 μM; morphine 200 μM). TXNIP is critical, as its overexpression weakens metformin's effect. The TXNIP siRNA/metformin coloaded TM@ZIF-8/HA nanosystem enhances efficacy via pH-responsive, CD44-targeted delivery with good biocompatibility, providing a perioperative pain management stra
