Valorization of Animal-Derived By-Products Through Microencapsulation of Heme and Non-Heme Iron by Vacuum Foam Drying: Development of Functional Gummy Candies.

Iron deficiency and associated anemia remain major public health concerns, requiring innovative food fortification systems with adequate technological and sensory performance. This study aimed to develop a multicomponent fortified gummy candy using heme iron from Cavia porcellus erythrocytes, non-heme iron from Feranin®, and elderberry juice, integrated through microencapsulation and stabilized by vacuum foam drying. Erythrocytes were isolated, dehydrated, and microencapsulated in a tara gum-maltodextrin matrix, yielding a powder with 1.49 mg Fe/g dry matter. The microencapsulates exhibited co

Toward dynamic tongue diagnosis: a conceptual framework for temporal phenotyping.

Digital tongue diagnosis has advanced considerably through image-based feature extraction and machine learning, yet its dominant analytical paradigm remains anchored in static, single-frame examination-an approach that inherently discards temporal information generated during the examination process, including stabilization dynamics, fluctuation patterns, and short-term physiological responsiveness. In this Perspective, we argue for a reorientation from static feature categorization towards temporal phenotyping. We propose a four-component analytical framework comprising: (i) standardized vide

RNA therapeutics and their delivery methods: a paradigm for haemophilia management.

Haemophilia management is currently undergoing a paradigm shift from traditional protein replacement to RNA modalities and their delivery. This review provides a critical analysis of RNA-based therapeutics (specifically small interfering RNA (siRNA), mRNA and CRISPR/Cas9) as a versatile paradigm distinct from DNA ones. We synthesise clinical and preclinical data to contrast these modalities: siRNA strategies (e.g. fitusiran) have indicated ∼90% reductions in bleeding rates by rebalancing haemostasis independent of factor deficiency; lipid nanoparticles (LNPs)-mRNA platforms offer tuneable, tra

Federated learning for privacy-preserving ophthalmic artificial intelligence: clinical applications and translational challenges.

Federated learning (FL) is increasingly relevant to ophthalmology because retinal photographs, optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT angiography, visual fields, and linked clinical records are clinically valuable but difficult to pool across institutions. In this narrative review, we synthesize ophthalmology-focused FL literature across diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), pediatric retinal disease, multi-disease retinal diagnostics, and emerging ophthalmic platforms. Current evidence suggests that FL can support collaborative AI development without ce

Wearable technologies in ophthalmic care and visual science.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Wearable technologies may enable eyecare practitioners to assess visual function, behaviour, environmental exposure, and treatment needs beyond the clinic. However, most applications require stronger clinical validation, usability evaluation, and evidence of patient benefit before routine implementation. BACKGROUND: Wearable devices may extend ophthalmic assessment and support beyond episodic clinic visits by capturing visual behaviour, environmental exposure, task performance, and ocular or periocular physiological signals. METHODS: This scoping review mapped English-lan

Trials, trips, and tribulations: pathways for implementing psychedelic therapy in Ireland.

Classical serotonergic psychedelics, such as psilocybin, show emerging evidence of therapeutic potential across a range of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, with indications of transdiagnostic efficacy. While early-phase studies yielded encouraging results, recent larger-scale phase 3 trials, such as those evaluating psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression, have shown more modest effects, and further findings from ongoing trials are awaited. Despite the absence of regulatory approvals from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Europe

The health effects of extreme heat.

Extreme heat is a significant direct health threat from climate change, with rising temperatures and frequent heatwaves increasingly stressing communities and health services across Africa. High baseline temperatures, widespread outdoor labour, limited cooling access and structural vulnerabilities heighten population exposure. The physiological impacts are severe: from extreme heat overwhelming thermoregulation, leading to dehydration, cardiovascular strain, direct cellular injury and potentially rapid progression to heat exhaustion, to the most severe and dangerous form, heat stroke, which is

Unlocking Africa's vaccine Independence: The critical role of technology transfer and intellectual property.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed Africa's profound dependency on external vaccine suppliers, with the continent producing less than 1% of global vaccines and hosting only 1.1% of clinical trials. Despite emerging initiatives, most African facilities remain limited to downstream fill-and-finish operations, while full vaccine antigen manufacturing capacity is largely absent. This perspective paper examines the critical role of Technology Transfer (TT) and Intellectual Property (IP) access in achieving Africa's vaccine independence. Effective TT must extend beyond documentation to include unspoken k

Exosomal microRNAs in Bronchial Aspirate and Other Liquid Biopsy Specimens for Lung Cancer: Current Evidence and Future Perspectives-A Narrative Review.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide, with most cases diagnosed at advanced stages. Conventional tissue biopsy is invasive, and low-dose CT (LDCT) screening-although effective-faces practical and logistical limitations. Liquid biopsy has emerged as a minimally invasive approach to capture tumor-derived material, including circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), cells, and extracellular vesicles (EVs). Among EVs, exosomes and their microRNA (miRNA) cargo offer a stable, disease-specific signal. Airway-proximal fluids such as bronchial aspirate and bronchoalveolar lavage fl

Dynamic Similarity Theory Based on Geometric Distortion and Material Compensation for On-Orbit Assembled Space Rod Structures.

On-orbit assembly technology is the core method for constructing extremely large space structures, with assembly modules serving as the fundamental units for structural integration. Since ground dynamic verification of full-scale modules is often restricted by laboratory space, scaled models are required for equivalent evaluation. During the scaling of systems containing high-aspect-ratio flexible rods, traditional complete geometric similarity laws lead to severe dynamic distortion in these slender elements as dimensions are reduced. To address this issue, a dynamic equivalence method based o

Alzheimer's disease subtyping approaches and the role of co-pathologies.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by amyloid-β plaques and abnormal phosphorylated Tau protein-containing neurofibrillary tangles, yet it shows marked heterogeneity in clinical presentation, neuroanatomical involvement and progression rate. This variability challenges the traditional view of AD as a single disease entity and has prompted efforts to define patient subgroups with shared characteristics who might benefit from targeted treatment strategies. Here, we provide a cross-disciplinary overview of current subtyping strategies. We describe both traditional stratification approaches

Discovery of frailty-linked proteins through multi-omics integration of brain and plasma proteomes with GWAS datasets.

BACKGROUND: Frailty, a clinical state of increased vulnerability to stressors with aging, imposes significant strain on healthcare systems. Its genetic underpinnings remain incompletely explored, highlighting the need to identify novel therapeutic targets for aging. METHODS: We integrated brain (N = 376) and plasma (N = 35,559) proteomes with a large-scale GWAS of Fried Frailty Score in 386,565 UK Biobank participants. We employed a combined analysis using Mendelian randomization (MR), Steiger filtering, Bayesian colocalization, proteome-wide (PWAS), and transcriptome-wide (TWAS) association

Autonomous intranasal delivery systems for central nervous system therapeutics.

Intranasal delivery provides a rapid, non-invasive route to the central nervous system, bypassing the blood-brain barrier and first-pass metabolism. However, its therapeutic potential remains constrained by the nasal cavity's complex anatomy, the restricted surface area and permeability of the olfactory epithelium, and short drug residence times. Recent advances in nanotechnology and synthetic biology have enabled the development of autonomous and programmable delivery systems that can target the olfactory epithelium, enhance brain entry and sustain therapeutic release. This review highlights

Birth Prevalence of Sickle Cell Disease in India: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Newborn screening helps identify sickle cell disorder (SCD) early and to promptly initiate effective measures. It is estimated that India accounts for approximately 16% of global annual births with SCD. Multiple reports of screening for SCD in India have emerged in the last decade. Our aim was to pool the birth prevalence of SCD and sickle cell trait (SCT). A systematic review of published evidence on nontargeted, universal screening for SCD or SCT in newborns was performed (16 studies). The pooled prevalence of SCD was 1100 per 100,000 (10 studies, 88,276 neonates, 95% CI: 432, 1768), while t

Scalable phosphotyrosine enrichment with SH2 superbinder enables deep profiling of EGF responses.

Phosphotyrosine signaling plays a critical role in many biological processes, from cell proliferation to immune response. Despite its importance, proteomic studies of tyrosine phosphorylation have been limited in scale and throughput due to the need for specialized enrichment with costly reagents and labor-intensive protocols. To address these challenges, we developed R2HaPpY, a phosphotyrosine enrichment method that combines highly simplified phosphotyrosine superbinder reagent preparation and automated high-throughput enrichment. Our new reagent binds phosphotyrosine peptides at higher effic

Polymer-Based Biomaterials in Periodontal and Peri-Implant Soft Tissue Augmentation: Biological Rationale, Clinical Applications, and Future Perspectives.

Soft tissue deficiencies around teeth and dental implants remain a significant challenge in contemporary periodontology and implant dentistry. These deficiencies influence a number of factors, including esthetic outcomes, peri-implant tissue stability, long-term maintenance, and patient satisfaction. Although autogenous connective tissue grafts remain the clinical gold standard for soft tissue augmentation, their use is limited by donor-site morbidity, increased surgical time, and restricted tissue availability. Consequently, polymer-based biomaterials have emerged as promising alternatives or

Revisiting the Status of Yellow Fever Epizootics and Its Surveillance in South America: New Non-Human Primates, Spillover and Ecological Drivers.

Yellow fever (YF) remains a re-emerging vector-borne zoonotic disease in tropical regions of the Americas despite the availability of an effective vaccine. In South America, the virus is maintained through a jungle transmission cycle involving Haemagogus and Sabethes mosquitoes and non-human primates (NHPs), which act as amplifying hosts and key epidemiological sentinels. This narrative review examines the current status of YF epizootics in South America, with a focus on the role of NHPs in viral circulation, early detection, and spillover risk to human populations. We synthesize recent eviden
