We reviewed 21 patients with 22 ruptures of the extensor pollicis longus at a mean of 5.3 years after transfer of the extensor indicis proprius tendon. Of these, 19 with 21 transfers described the result as good, and two as fair. The mean deficit of extension between the operated and unoperated thumbs was 1.4 cm, and the mean flexion deficit 0.6 cm. Pressure gauge measurements showed that the strength of the transfer was 51% of that of the uninjured extensor. The two fair results had an extensor lag of over 1.5 cm. Independent extension of the index was maintained in all patients, none having

In our 3 years of clinical experience, we have found that diagnostic ultrasound provides the veterinarian with a valuable diagnostic tool. It allows the clinician to quantify morphologic change that has occurred as a result of soft-tissue injuries, even when the clinical findings are ambiguous or insufficient. In cases in which aggressive postinjury therapy has been instituted prior to presentation, diagnostic ultrasound is often the only noninvasive method that can ascertain the extent of the horse's injury. Diagnostic ultrasound provides the technology to detect injuries before they become p

The sagittal bands of the metacarpophalangeal joint play an important role in the control of the mobility and stability of the extensor aponeurosis of the joint. A case of dislocation of the extensor tendon from rupture of the radial sagittal fibers is reported. A method of repair of the tendon is discussed. The result at one year is excellent.

A total of 39 patients with a mean age of 64 years (41 to 88) who had had anterior shoulder dislocation were followed-up an average of 2 years after trauma in order to evaluate the conditions of the rotator cuff. All of the patients were evaluated clinically, radiographically, and sonographically. Clinical evaluation revealed significant differences between the dislocated shoulders and the contralateral ones: the mean Constant score was 67 in the group with dislocated shoulders and 87 in the contralateral group. Ultrasound revealed partial injury of the cuff in 31% of cases and complete injury

Sports-related knee injuries are among the most common musculoskeletal conditions affecting athletes and frequently result in pain, functional limitations, prolonged rehabilitation, and delayed return to sport. Emerging rehabilitation technologies and advanced physiotherapy interventions have gained increasing attention for improving clinical outcomes following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, patellar tendinopathy, and other sports-related knee disorders. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of contemporary rehabilitation strategies in enhancing functional reco

BACKGROUND: The proportion of patients with clinical findings referable to peroneal pathology and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-diagnosed peroneal tendon pathology is unknown. Previous studies have correlated surgical findings with clinical data and preoperative MRI, but there are no published studies that reference clinical examination findings to imaging findings.
PURPOSE: To determine the relationship between peroneal tendon pathology as diagnosed by MRI and clinical findings of peroneal tendon pathology.
METHODS: Fifty-six patients who had both MRI evidence of peroneal tendon patholog

BACKGROUND: Lateral ankle sprains are the most common sports related injury. Unfortunately a number of other lateral ankle injuries are often misdiagnosed as a sprain, resulting in misdirected therapy, delayed functional return and unresolved ankle pain.
OBJECTIVE: This review focuses on the differential diagnosis and management of unresolved lateral ankle pain, with an emphasis on methods to correctly identify the injury.
DISCUSSION: A surprisingly long list of conditions can mimic a lateral ankle sprain, including syndesmosis sprains, subtalar sprains with or without instability, impingeme

The evaluation of ankle injuries is a common challenge for family physicians. Diagnosis is made by using knowledge of the anatomy and function of the ankle joint to aid in taking an adequate history and performing an appropriate physical examination. The patient should be questioned about the mechanism of injury, previous injury, disability, treatment and pain. The ankle should be evaluated for ecchymosis, swelling, areas of tenderness and laxity. These measures help to determine what, if any, additional diagnostic procedures may be needed. Most ankle sprains are lateral, affecting the anterio

Introduction Traditionally, the latissimus dorsi muscle with or without skin paddle has been the flap of choice for coverage of elbow defects. The ALT flap has found application in elective upper limb defects on account of it's ability to be tailor made for individual defects. Our series of 10 cases shows the advantages of using this flap for acute trauma defects. Materials and Methods Consecutive 10 cases of severe elbow injuries, involving varying amounts of the lower arm and proximal forearm underwent debridement followed by coverage using the free anterolateral thigh flap. Nine of 10 arter

Injuries and overuse syndromes of the fingers are the most common problems in rock climbers. While injuries to the finger flexor pulley system and tenosynovitis are well known to be frequent problems, other syndromes like the lumbrical shift syndrome or flexor tendon ganglions are rather unknown. The differential diagnosis of finger pain in rock climbers involves many differential diagnoses and can be quite difficult. The diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the evaluation of finger pain in rock climbers are demonstrated. More than 20 different diagnoses need to be considered. After takin

Fifty-two cases of nerves injuries involving the sciatic nerve or one of its two main branches (tibialis or peroneal nerve), between the sciatic notch and the knee, were treated by nerve grafts or nerve sutures. 26 cases were injured in the thigh. They were treated by 11 nerve sutures followed by good results in isolated lesions, and 15 nerve grafts. In 9 cases nerve loss was short and fascicular graft was possible. Clear cut injuries had satisfactory results. In 6 cases, nerve loss was extensive (> 10 cm), especially after sciatic nerve disruption following femoral bone fracture. There was no
