BACKGROUND: Depressive and adjustment disorders are highly prevalent in patients with physical diseases and are associated with poorer quality of life, increased morbidity and mortality, as well as higher healthcare costs. Access to mental health care holds strong importance for these patients, although waiting times for outpatient individual psychotherapy in Germany are often long. Attending an intervention while waiting for individual therapy could improve this problem. For this purpose, we developed an eight-session cognitive behavioral group therapy (STEpS) and tested its efficacy in a ran

Purpose: Among black transgender women (transwomen) at high risk of HIV acquisition or already living with HIV/AIDS, the study examined whether medical or socially based gender affirming factors may contribute differentially to selected measures of resiliency, perceived stress, and a scale measure of mental health outcomes. This question has implications for clinical care and counseling of this population. Methods: Seventy-seven black transwomen were recruited to participate in a private, face-to-face structured interview. Two index measures of gender affirmation (GA) were constructed from the

INTRODUCTION: Provoked vestibulodynia (PVD) is a common type of dyspareunia among young women. The patho-physiology remains largely unclear. Women with PVD have general pain hypersensitivity and often report additional pain symptoms. Signs point towards PVD being a chronic pain disorder similar to other syndromes of longstanding pain, including a common comorbidity of anxiety and depression. Polymorphism in the serotonin receptor gene, 5HT-2A, has been associated with other chronic pain disorders such as fibromyalgia but has not been investigated in PVD patients.
AIM: We aimed to investigate

INTRODUCTION: Mental health treatment is a service for military service members who have experienced psychological injury or trauma. Unfortunately, the stigma associated with treatment can prevent many service members from seeking and receiving treatment designed to help them recover. Previous studies have examined the impacts of stigma among military personnel as well as civilians; however, stigma among service members currently receiving mental health treatment is unknown. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationships between stigma, demographic variables, and mental health sy

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients undergoing dialysis therapy due to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) present a high prevalence of sleep disorders, including restless legs syndrome (RLS). However, the known data generally have been obtained from relatively small patient samples, coming from single or very few dialysis units. Moreover, some data were collected prior to the recent improvements in dialysis techniques, pharmacological therapies and to the establishment of internationally recognised diagnostic criteria for RLS.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In order to study the incidence of the different sl

BACKGROUND: Chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNLBP) is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Growing evidence implicates brain-gut-immune axis dysregulation in the pathogenesis and perpetuation of chronic musculoskeletal pain. Heat-sensitive moxibustion (HSM), a refined form of traditional suspended moxibustion that targets heat-sensitized acupoints, has demonstrated preliminary analgesic efficacy, but its mechanisms through the brain-gut-immune axis remain unexplored.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical changes following HSM in patients with CNLBP and to explore its putative a

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is common in the United States, with an estimated lifetime prevalence of 30%.1 The rate of use is higher among white males, Native Americans, and individuals of low socioeconomic status.1 Alcohol withdrawal symptoms manifest in 50% of individuals who misuse alcohol.1 While life-threatening sequelae of alcohol withdrawal are rare, the syndrome is a common reason for emergency department (ED) presentations. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms range from benign, cravings,

BACKGROUND: Many community-based intervention models for mental health and wellbeing have undergone robust experimental evaluation; however, there are limited accounts of the implementation of these evidence-based interventions in practice. Atmiyata piloted the implementation of a community-led intervention to identify and understand the challenges of delivering such an intervention. The goal of the pilot evaluation is to identify factors important for larger-scale implementation across an entire district in India. This paper presents the results of a feasibility and acceptability study of the

INTRODUCTION: The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CF Foundation) recommends the provision of genetic counseling (GC) to help educate families and decrease anxiety around the cystic fibrosis (CF) newborn screening process. Unfortunately, access to genetic counselors is limited, especially for CF trained genetic counselors. We hypothesized that the GC process for families could be improved by utilizing telemedicine to leverage the availability of two dedicated, CF trained genetic counselors to provide access to GC for several CF centers. In addition, we hoped to demonstrate that use of trained CF ge

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Former American football players exposed to repetitive head impacts (RHI) are at a risk of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), but chronic pain, polypharmacy, and extensive orthopedic surgeries may also contribute to cognitive and behavioral symptoms. This study evaluated associations between chronic pain, centrally acting medications (CAMs), and orthopedic surgeries with cognitive and behavioral symptoms among former American football players.
METHODS: The sample included former professional (PRO) and collegiate (COL) football players and unexposed, asymptomati

OBJECTIVE: Establish whether POCD is associated with new disability after surgery, which would inform whether POCD impacts patient-centered outcomes.
BACKGROUND: POCD is a decline in neuropsychiatric tests scores from presurgical baseline which occurs in approximately 15% of older patients 3 months after surgery. POCD is a research construct meant to investigate patient and family reports of older adults who were "never the same after surgery." However, many patients with POCD do not perceive difficulty with thinking and memory, and the question remains whether POCD impacts patient function.

BACKGROUND: The Patient Activation Measure (PAM-13) was developed using Rasch analysis to assess knowledge, skills and confidence in the management of one's health. Previous studies report positive relationships between PAM-13 scores, self-management behaviours and longitudinal health outcomes in adults with chronic disease. There is little extant measurement property evidence for the use of PAM-13 in specific osteoarthritis (OA) populations. This study tested measurement properties of the PAM-13 in people living with hip and knee OA.
METHODS: Item response frequency analysis was conducted. R

BACKGROUND: People with mental disorders have an increased risk of diabetes, yet conflicting evidence exists regarding the quality of diabetes care they receive. To address this evidence gap, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess and compare diabetes quality of care in people with diabetes with mental disorders versus people with diabetes without mental disorders.
METHODS: In this systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis, we searched Scopus, Embase, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO for cohort and case-control studies published between database inception and Feb 8, 2025.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a clinically important complication in elderly patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) that is associated with prolonged hospitalization, increased morbidity, and higher health-care costs. Although cognitive impairment is a known risk factor for POD, the role of comprehensive cognitive and psychological evaluation remains underexplored in patients undergoing TKA. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation of preoperative cognitive and psychological factors with POD after TKA.

Background: Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET), an innovative form of exposure therapy (ET), has been demonstrated to be effective in treating acrophobia. However, its neural mechanisms of action and how it differs from traditional imaginal exposure therapy (IET) remain unclear. This study utilized resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the effects of VRET on brain activity in acrophobic patients and to explore the potential mechanisms underlying its therapeutic action. Method: Fifty patients with acrophobia were randomly assigned to either an experiment
