Upper airway obstruction due to tonsillar lymphadenopathy in human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Head and neck manifestations of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are common and include diffuse cervical lymphadenopathy, cutaneous and mucosal Kaposi's sarcoma, mucosal herpes simplex infection, upper aerodigestivetractcandidiasis, and parotidlymphadenopathy and cysts. Recurrent otitis media and chronic sinusitis have been noted in the pediatric HIV population. We describe a patient with HIV-associated tonsillar and adenoid lymphadenopathy and upper airway obstruction. Pathologic analysis of the tonsillar tissue revealed severe lymphofollicular hyperplasia similar to that of other

[A case of diphtheria in a young man].

A case of pharyngeal diphtheria with mild course was observed in a man aged 21 years who had had received four vaccinations. This was the first case of this disease in Poland since 1983, and the possibility is discussed of diphtheria spread in a country with widespread Di-Per-Te vaccinations, as pointed out in the present literature.

Diagnostic imaging of Waldeyer's ring.

Diagnostic imaging of Waldeyer's ring can be obtained by plain films, CT scans, and MRI. In most instances, physical examination and plain films are sufficient for diagnosis and therapy. In addition, plain films are inexpensive and readily available. Although more expensive and less available, CT and MRI allow further evaluation of deep tissues not seen by physical examinations and plain film and permit more complete evaluations of more complex pathologic processes in Waldeyer's ring. Although both CT and MRI are often complementary, the indications for each modality are still evolving.

Crypt architecture of tonsilla lingualis in the monkey, Macaca fascicularis. A correlated light- and scanning electron-microscopic study.

Crypts of the lingual tonsil were investigated in 10 male and female Macaca fascicularis by use of correlated light- and scanning-electron microscopy. Counting of crypt openings provided an estimate of the total number of respective crypto-lymphatic units, which were found to range from 20 to 39. Crypt openings appeared in three distinct morphological varieties, i.e. circular, oval or slit-like. Tonsillar units existed individually or were arranged in a rosary fashion below a slit-like mucosal fold serving as a common exit. Although the crypt epithelium was generally non-keratinized, individua

Adenotonsillectomy; indications and application of surgical techniques.

As a result of audiometric surveys in public schools, many children are being referred to physicians for further examination and definitive treatment. Therefore, the indications for adenotonsillectomy are reviewed. It is believed that the operation should not be done in infants with congenital deafness until full study of the problem has been completed, and that it should not be done routinely in children in whom there is no positive indication for it. When the operation is done, as much normal mucosa as possible should be saved. Closing the superior aspect of the incision with chromic suture

Associations Between Findings of Fusobacterium necrophorum or β-Hemolytic Streptococci and Complications in Pharyngotonsillitis-A Registry-Based Study in Southern Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Most pharyngotonsillitis guidelines focus on the identification of group A streptococci (GAS), guided by clinical scores determining whom to test with a rapid antigen detection test. Nevertheless, many patients testing negative with this test are evaluated for group C/G streptococci (GCS/GGS) and Fusobacterium necrophorum, yet their importance remains debated. Our primary aim was to evaluate associations between complications and findings of F. necrophorum, GAS, or GCS/GGS in pharyngotonsillitis. METHODS: This was a retrospective, registry-based study of pharyngotonsillitis cases …

Oropharyngeal obstruction and respiratory system compliance are linked to ventilatory control parameters in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Instable ventilatory control is an endotypic trait of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between the anatomical compromise of the upper (oro- and naso-pharynx) and lower airways and ventilatory control (measured by chemical loop gain) in otherwise healthy children suffering from moderate to severe OSAS (apnea hypopnea index ≥ 5/hour). The children underwent ear, nose and throat examination, measurement of impedance of the respiratory system that allowed characterizing peripheral lung mechanics using the extended Resistance-Inertance-Complian
