Behavioral reactions of harbor porpoises to impact pile driving noise are predicted by the auditory frequency weighted sound pressure level.

Offshore impact pile driving is a major source of high level underwater noise that can disturb marine mammal behavior tens of kilometers away. Projects involving pile driving are therefore subject to environmental impact assessments, which include modelling of the spatial extent of the behavioral disturbance. Reliable predictions about behavioral reaction distances require robust estimates of the minimum received levels of noise above which animals are likely to respond. Studies of reactions of harbor porpoises to pile driving noise in the wild and playback in captivity were identified, and re

Spectral and cepstral measurements in women with behavioral dysphonia.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether there are differences in cepstral and spectral acoustic measures between women with behavioral dysphonia with and without laryngeal lesions and verify whether there is a correlation between such measures and the auditory-perceptual evaluation of voice quality. METHODS: The sample comprised 78 women with behavioral dysphonia without laryngeal lesions (BDWOL) and 68 with behavioral dysphonia with laryngeal lesions (vocal nodules) (BDWL). Cepstral peak prominence (CPP), cepstral peak prominence-smoothed (CPPS), spectral decrease, and H1-H2 (difference between the

On the calculation of reflectance in non-uniform ear canals.

Ear-canal reflectance is useful for quantifying the conductive status of the middle ear because it can be measured non-invasively at a distance from the tympanic membrane. Deriving the ear-canal reflectance requires decomposing the total acoustic pressure into its forward- and reverse-propagating components. This decomposition is conveniently achieved using formulas that involve the input and characteristic impedances of the ear canal. The characteristic impedance is defined as the ratio of sound pressure to volume flow of a propagating wave and, for uniform waveguides, the plane-wave characte

Contralateral suppression of TEOAE. Attempts to find a latency.

Latency of the contralateral suppression of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) has been investigated using the ILO88 system for ipsilateral stimulation and recording, and a laboratory computer interface producing contralateral noise bursts. Reduction of rms amplitude in the last 10.24 ms of the response was found to produce the most consistent indication of suppression. Onset latencies varied from less than 40 ms to 140 ms, offset latency from 20 ms to more than 80 ms. Acoustic reflex latencies have not been reported with such short latencies and this makes it unlikely that this re

On the influence of the middle ear muscles upon changes in sound transmission.

The influence of artificially induced impedance changes on the frequency response of the middle ear has been investigated in three experienced listeners. The tensor-reflex has been simulated by application of positive and negative air-pressure to the outer ear canal. In this test-situation, the thresholdshift ("l) obtained is greatest in the surrounding of the first resonance of the middle ear ("l = 8 dB at 500 Hz). For bone-conduction, the effect is weaker by about 2 dB than for air-conduction. The change in sound transmission is constant for all SPL's and is mainly due to the impedance chang

Brainstem mediation of the stapedius muscle reflex in hydranencephaly.

Hydranencephaly is a rare condition in which the cerebral hemispheres are absent at birth and are replaced by membranous sacs in a cerebrospinal fluid-filled cranium. Surviving hydranencephalic patients have a functional brainstem and possible remnants of the cerebral cortex. This case report examines hearing function and the integrity of the brainstem mediated stapedius muscle reflex (SMR) in an adult with hydranencephaly, using middle ear impedance change measures. The brainstem mediated ipsilateral and cross-brainstem contralateral SMRs were elicited in the right ear at normal threshold lev

Threshold estimation using the "chained stimuli" auditory brain stem response technique.

The chained stimuli ABR method, which allows acquisition of data for a seven-point latency-intensity function for both ears in approximately 35 min, is described. Testing of 22 ears with a simulated conductive loss, and 20 ears with sensorineural impairment, indicates that the chained stimuli method provides equivalent threshold estimates to that obtained with the conventional ABR measurement technique.

The impact of diastema on the articulation of speech sounds.

The faculty of speech in humans is a distinguishing trait that sets them apart from all other biological species. Speech production is typically achieved through the processes of phonation and articulation. The acoustic method of studying speech is an individual auditory approach based on hearing as a biological analyzer.

Sleep Spindles and Slow Oscillations as Potential Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets in Mild-to-Moderate Alzheimer's Disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review critically evaluates evidence on sleep spindles (SP), slow oscillations (SOs), and their coordination in mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD), focusing on their relationships with cognition, AD biomarkers, and their therapeutic potential. RECENT FINDINGS: Longitudinal studies associate greater SP and/or SO activity with better cognition and favourable amyloid and tau profiles after clinical onset. Spindle and SO coupling may index network integrity. Preserved NREM sleep oscillations are associated with lower orexin concentrations and weaker adverse relation

Discussion of mechanism behind "bamboo blind" sign observed in fatty liver parenchyma.

PURPOSE: To elucidate the mechanism behind the so-called "bamboo blind" sign frequently observed on B-mode images as multiple low-echoic lines in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and highly fatty liver cases. METHODS: Six types of acoustic shadowing artifacts that might be the cause of the bamboo blind sign were defined. B-mode images were acquired for 21 fatty liver cases (inc. 9 highly fatty liver cases). The cases were then pathologically diagnosed. A phantom experiment was also performed to investigate whether refraction occurs due to the gap of sound velocity between two different media. RE

SAW Accelerates Non-Destructive Cell Detachment from Thermoresponsive Surfaces.

The rapid and nondestructive detachment of cells from culture surfaces is critical for obtaining high-quality cell populations in tissue engineering applications. Thermoresponsive coatings, such as poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), enable enzyme-free cell release; however, their practical utility is often constrained by inherently slow detachment kinetics. Here, we report a hybrid strategy that synergistically integrates surface acoustic wave (SAW) stimulation with a PNIPAM-based coating to markedly accelerate cell detachment. Under optimized conditions, this system achieves a cell detach

Social trills of the pipistrelle bat (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) are quieter than their echolocation calls, but have a greater range.

Under natural conditions, the sound pressure level of social trills and echolocation calls of pipistrelle bats was measured as peak equivalent sound pressure level (peSPL) with the aim of estimating the range of the signals. Thirty-eight echolocation calls and 55 social trills, whose distance from the microphone was known, were evaluated. The social trills were approximately 8 dB quieter than the echolocation calls but had a significantly greater range because of their lower call frequency. Based on the American National Standards Institute/Acoustical Society of America [ANSI/ASA (2024) S1.26-

Semi-Automatic Artificial Lips Device for Brass Instruments with Real-Time Pitch Feedback Control.

We propose a semi-automatic artificial lips control device that allows a human performer to produce sound on a brass instrument without the need to vibrate their own lips. The device integrates position control that presses artificial lips toward the mouthpiece and aperture control via wire traction, together with a pre-calibrated motor table and acoustic feedback for pitch stabilization. In evaluations using a euphonium, we verified timbre, pitch range, and pitch stabilization, including harmonic modes. The results showed that the harmonic structure of tones produced by a human using the devi

Restoration of speech articulatory control and functional connectivity through visually-guided rehabilitation in chronic non-fluent aphasia: A case report study.

Computer-based therapy has shown promise in speech rehabilitation for individuals with language disorders. In this study, we investigated behavioural, acoustic and brain network changes in a patient with chronic non-fluent aphasia who underwent an enriched rehabilitation programme, combining the Ultraspeech-player software with conventional speech therapy, followed by a period of conventional therapy alone. The software provided visualisation of articulatory movements recorded from a reference speaker. Comprehensive assessments, conducted before and after each rehabilitation period, included p

An optimality-guided model of differential adaptation to opposing perturbationsa).

This paper introduces an artificial neural-network-based computational model of differential sensorimotor adaptation to opposing auditory feedback perturbations in speech. A neural Optimality Predictor generating (near-)optimal articulation plans is trained to balance maximal intelligibility and minimal articulatory effort, based on lexical, phonemic, and stylistic context. Adaptation is driven by two main mechanisms: updates of internal sensory predictors estimating sensory outcomes of articulatory plans, and updates of the Optimality Predictor. Simulations replicate experimentally observed d

Lightweight but high-strength nanocellulose foams via ambient pressure drying for highly efficient sound and thermal insulation.

Porous foams have been identified as having broad application prospects in a number of fields. However, the existing foams have problems e.g., poor sound absorption performance, low structural strength, and bad degradability. Herein, a lightweight but high-strength biomass foam was reported by drying at ambient pressure, which was composed of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) immersed in ethanol/Fe3+ bath. By adjusting the solid contents of CNFs, the compressive strength of the foam was improved, allowing it to support forces up to 4500 times its weight. The macroporous-doped gradient structure was

Pixel-responsive optimization beamforming method for ultrasound transcranial imaging.

The propagation of acoustic waves through bone remains a longstanding challenge in transcranial ultrasound imaging. As a highly scattering medium, the skull causes significant distortions in the ultrasonic wavefield, introducing complex aberrations that hinder precise image reconstruction. Conventional delay-and-sum (DAS) algorithms, which process pixels independently, fail to account for inter-pixel relationships, limiting their ability to correct such distortions. To address this issue, we propose a Pixel-Responsive Optimization (PRO) Beamforming Method that leverages backscattered signals f
