Association between hs-CRP-triglyceride glucose index and obstructive sleep apnea: a study from NHANES 2015-2018.

BACKGROUND: High-sensitivity C-reactive protein-triglyceride glucose index (CTI) has demonstrated superior clinical utility as a dual-parameter indicator integrating both insulin resistance (IR) and systemic inflammatory status. However, the association between CTI and the risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate this association utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. METHODS: The analysis was based on data from the 2015-2018 NHANES. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used…

Neurometabolic Response to Apneic Stimuli Tracks Global Grey Matter Volume Deficits in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been linked to cortical atrophy and increased risk of neurodegeneration, a process potentially mediated by neurometabolic dysregulation. Recent work using high temporal-resolution metabolic MRI found greater changes in the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption (CMRO2) during cued breath-hold stimuli simulating spontaneous apneas in OSA patients than in healthy people. Here, we conducted a secondary analysis on this work to assess whether the observed neurometabolic responses were associated with grey matter volume fraction. We examined previously colle…

Continuous positive airway pressure reduces nocturnal arrhythmia avalanche burden in obstructive sleep apnea: An adherence-dependent effect.

BACKGROUND: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the primary treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but randomized evidence for arrhythmia reduction is lacking. Nocturnal arrhythmia avalanches (NAAs)-frequent, nonsustained arrhythmic episodes associated with cardiovascular mortality-may provide enhanced statistical power for detecting treatment effects. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether CPAP therapy reduces NAA burden in patients with OSA and whether this effect is dependent on treatment adherence. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of electrocardiograph…

Sex-specific differences in overnight nitrate levels in persons with obstructive sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sex-specific differences in OSA-associated symptoms and polysomnographic findings are well recognized. However, sex differences in intermediate pathways potentially linking OSA and cardiometabolic outcomes are limited. OSA is known to be associated with decreased nitric oxide (NO)-related vasodilation and endothelial dysfunction. The current study sought to characterize the independent association between OSA severity and overnight NO metabolites (i.e. markers of oxidative stress) and determine if there were differences by sex in persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Interpreting the mandibular jaw movement signal in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea diagnosis: A technical and practical review.

Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common yet often underdiagnosed condition, partly due to limited access to polysomnography. Mandibular jaw movement (MJM) analysis offers a promising alternative to conventional home sleep apnea testing in children, capturing the dynamic interactions between respiratory drive and upper airway musculature, enabling accurate identification of, and critical insights into, sleep-disordered breathing events. This technical and practical review provides a structured framework for understanding and interpreting MJM signals during sleep in pediatric patient…

Leveraging Central Sleep Apnea Events to Validate the Measurement of Lung Volume Changes Using Thoracic Bio-Impedance.

Sleep disordered breathing can cause serious health issues, yet current diagnostic methods are cumbersome and prone to error. Thoracic electrical bio-impedance (BioZ) is a promising alternative, but it remains unclear whether the measured BioZ variations reflect lung volume changes. We leverage linear reductions in lung volume during central sleep apnea (CSA) events to assess whether BioZ measurements capture changes in lungs. BioZ signals from 92 sleep studies were analyzed using linear regression to quantify their slope and linearity (R2). Group differences were assessed, and a linear mixed-…
