BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Choledochal cysts are rare congenital cystic dilatations of the bile ducts that occur in fewer than 1% of individuals. The disease is common in East Asia, and most of the literature concerns those populations, but some data about Western populations have been published recently. Long-term reports about the disease in Middle Eastern populations, however, are currently lacking. We report a single-center 20-year experience in diagnosing and managing choledochal anomalies.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants were adult patients in whom choledochal cysts were diagnosed ov

Chronic enteropathy associated with SLCO2A1 gene (CEAS) is a rare disorder characterized by multiple small intestine ulcers. Patients with CEAS typically present with chronic anemia and gastrointestinal bleeding. Besides CEAS, SLCO2A1 mutations cause primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (PHO) which is considered as an extraintestinal manifestation in CEAS patients. Since CEAS and Crohn's disease are clinically indistinguishable, patients are often misdiagnosed with Crohn's disease. Herein, we describe a 4-year-old Turkish girl with CEAS due to homozygous pathogenic variant (c.656C > T) in SLC

Crohn's disease can be characterized as a chronic inflammatory state causing various clinical presentations and long-term risks that should be considered when determining the optimal therapeutic strategy. To date, while a few case reports have been available regarding ustekinumab-induced thrombocytopenia, none are available regarding hypersplenism. We describe a 33-year-old woman who developed only Ileocolonic Crohn's disease on ustekinumab due to failure of anti-TNF with septic shock and thrombocytopenia. Abdominal computed tomography revealed hepatosplenomegaly, parasacral collection, and fi

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Helicobacter pylori infection affects approximately 50% of the global population and has become a serious health concern related to gastric cancer, gastritis, and peptic ulcers. This organism acquires drug resistance through gene mutations, and its increasing resistance to antibiotics has severely influenced the effectiveness of eradication efforts. Therefore, we designed this study to determine the prevalence of H. pylori virulence- (cagA and vacA) and antibiotic resistance - associated genotypes in patients with gastric cancer infected with H. pylori in Whenzhou, C

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Assessing the extent of fibrosis is an essential part of therapeutic decisions in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Liver biopsies are the "gold standard" for evaluating liver fibrosis but have many limitations. Thus, noninvasive predictors of fibrosis have been developed. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of red cell distribution width (RDW) to platelet ratio as a simple noninvasive method for predicting the hepatic fibrosis stage in patients with CHC.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 197 Egyptian patients with CHC. A r

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has always been identified as a major health threat and a potential cause of liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, and other associated problems. The introduction of direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) has represented a paradigm shift in HCV management. In this study, we aim to observe the rate of sustained virologic response (SVR12) in a large scale of patients at a single center as well as record the post-treatment changes in the hematologic, hepatic, and renal biochemical profiles.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) is an autosomal recessively inherited disease that causes intrahepatic-hepatocellular cholestasis. PFIC constitutes approximately 10-15% of cholestatic liver diseases in children. The aim of this study is to draw attention to this group of diseases, which pose a higher risk, in societies where consanguineous marriage is more common, and to share our experiences since the studies in the literature, regarding this group of diseases are case series with small number of patients.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Gastric cancer is diagnosed by endoscopy but false negative rates of up to 10% in the west and 40% in Asia have been reported. In Lebanon, little is known about the rates of post-gastroscopy gastric cancer (PGGC), defined as the proportion of patients diagnosed with gastric cancer with a negative previous examination within 2 years of diagnosis. We aimed to examine the rate of PGGC and its risk factors, clinico-pathologic and endoscopic characteristics at a University medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is defined by the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms, with an abnormal eosinophilic infiltrate of the intestine wall and exclusion of other causes of secondary eosinophilia. EGE has three clinical presentations, depending on the depth of eosinophilic infiltration of the bowel wall. It individualizes into three types, namely mucosal, muscular, and subserosal. Eosinophilic ascites, which is caused by edema and eosinophilic inflammation of the serosal layer of the small bowel wall, is the most uncommon presentation of EGE.

Splanchnic venous thrombosis is a rare type of venous thromboembolism, and its actual incidence is still unknown. Splenic infarction develops due to splenic vein (SV) thrombosis. Patients with COVID-19 may be exposed to a risk of thrombotic events, and the system affected at the highest level by coagulopathy is the respiratory system. The case presented here is splenic infarction that developed because of SV thrombosis, which is a rare form of venous thromboembolism.
