In 1982-83, 4,485 persons ages 65 or older were identified by a household census in East Boston, MA: 3,812 (85 percent) of them responded to a health and social status questionnaire. Data on age, sex, and living arrangements for the 4,485 eligible people were analyzed with respect to final participation status and reason for refusal or reluctance. Six hundred sixty-nine breast biopsies performed at the Methodist Hospital of Southern California and the Arcadia Outpatient Surgery Center during 1987 and 1988 were reviewed. Three hundred twenty-eight biopsies were performed for clinical indications (lump, thickening, or nipple discharge). Three hundred forty-one biopsies (51%) were performed because of mammographic abnormalities and required preoperative x-ray localization. In order to lower the perinatal mortality rate, it is necessary to acquire a specific fetal diagnosis in all late abortions and stillbirths. A uniform classification for the maternal/fetal diagnosis is needed for comparison of progress in maternity care program between the different countries. We have studied 86 consecutive cases of late abortion and stillbirth at Viborg Hospital, Denmark, and made a comparison with the modified Aberdeen classification of fetal death.

A structured interview designed to detect affective disorders and to produce both DSM-III and DSM-III-R diagnoses was administered to a community sample of 1000 people living in Florence. The interviews were carried out by physician-psychiatrists (qualified psychiatrists or 3rd-4th-year trainees) trained in the use of operational diagnoses. The 1-year prevalence and point prevalence were, respectively: 1.7% and 0.6% for bipolar disorder; 0.4% and 0.4% for cyclothymia; 6.2% and 2.8% for major depression; 2.6% and 0.8% for dysthymia; 5.2% and 1.8% for depressive disorder not otherwise specified.

We studied community acquired pulmonary infections in general hospital. Forty-seven outpatients (group I) and 107 inpatients (group II) were analyzed respectively. The mean age of group I was 43.4 years old and that of group II was 57.4 years old. Significant underlying diseases were present in 45% of group I and 62% of group II. Experience with 1035 carotid endarterectomies in a single community over a 2-year period was analyzed. Twenty-two surgeons working in six hospitals were involved. All surgeons had full-time or part-time appointments at the University of Rochester, 18 had special interest in vascular surgery, and eight had obtained a certificate of qualification in vascular surgery. Results on the age/sex specific prevalence of DSM-III affective disorders from the NIMH Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study (ECA), a probability sample of over 18,000 adults from five United States communities, are presented. Alimentary duplications which include a variety of alimentary cysts, diverticula and tubular malformations are rare abnormalities. Most of them, especially in relation to the oesophagus, do not communicate with the lumen. We present two very rare cases of communicating oesophageal duplication. Both are left sided and unassociated with any other congenital abnormality. These features again are uncommon with such duplications.
