[Acquired male urethra diverticula. Report of seven cases. Bibliographic review].

OBJECTIVES: To report our personal experience in a rare urethral pathology in relation with iatrogenic sequelae from surgical treatment of lower urinary tract pathologies. METHODS: We analyze the causes, type of presentation, and surgical treatment of seven cases of urethral diverticula, which account for 2.18% of the urethral procedures performed in our department, this latter representing 2.3% of a total of 11,845 surgical procedures in a period of 25 years. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Male urethra diverticula go unnoticed because their initial symptoms are very similar to other lower urinary tra

[Abscess colon diverticular disease produced for Actinomyces israelii in a renal transplant recipient].

We present the case of a 53 years old man with a cadaveric kidney transplant under cyclosporin A and prednisolone therapy. Clinical transplant course was uneventful until 15 years after transplant, when he was admitted in our hospital with fever and a perirenal mass of unknown origin. Cyclosporin A was removed and a left sided colon was carried out and a abscess colon diverticular disease produced for Actinomyces israelii was diagnosed. The development was satisfactory after medical and surgical treatment.

Jejunal lipomatosis with diverticulosis: report of a case.

We herein report the very rare case of a 68-year-old Japanese man with multiple jejunal lipomatosis and diverticulosis. He was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of melena and anemia. A barium study of the small bowel showed multiple lipomatosis and diverticulosis. An approximately 200-cm length of the jejunum was therefore resected. Thereafter, two diverticula and 215 lipomas were recognized in the resected specimen. A pathological examination showed mature adipose tissue with fibrous septa in the submucosal and muscularis propria. These findings were thus suggested to be due t

[Vaginal-sigmoid fistula caused by diverticular disease].

A case of a 66 years old patient suffering from a sigmoido-vaginal fistula and diverticulosis, previously treated with a total laparohysterectomy, is reported. Retrograde studies demonstrated the presence of fistula, whereas colonoscopy and barium enema failed. After laparotomy and an appropriate bowel preparation, surgery was restricted to the bowel resection and anastomosis, whereas the vaginal defect was not closed.

Colonic fistulas.

Colonic fistulas are uncommon. They are frequently external but also occur internally to a number of organs. External fistulas are usually caused by a complication or are the result of a surgical procedure, such as leaking anastomosis or incision and drainage of an abscess resulting from an underlying pathologic condition.

Congenital left ventricular diverticula: a rare cause of sudden cardiac death.

Congenital left ventricular diverticula are a rare cause of sudden cardiac death. We describe the first reported case of ventricular fibrillation in association with congenital diverticula of the heart. The diagnosis of left ventricular diverticula was made by cardiac catheterization and confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. Treatment was initiated with anti-arrhythmic and anticoagulant drugs to prevent life-threatening arrhythmias and emboli.

[Evaluation of esophageal function in surgically-treated patients].

The authors report on their experience acquired in the surgical treatment of functional esophageal disease (achalasia, diffuse esophageal spasm, diverticula and gastroesophageal reflux). The authors affirm that a correct and meticulous functional study of the esophagus is fundamental for the adoption of precise surgical plotting, in order to circumvent all of the complications and failures described in Literature. Such an objective can be achieved intraoperatively thanks to myotomy and fundoplication with the aid of intraoperative manometry (IEM) that, when performed in the course of myotomy,

[Gastroenterological problems in the elderly].

An increasing number of elderly patients presenting with gastroenterological problems is seen in hospital and private practice. It is therefore very important to be able to recognize the different clinical aspects of these diseases in this category of patients. Esophageal reflux and problems of motility can give rise to vague, atypical symptomatology, which does not orient the clinician to the esophagus. Unrecognized gastric ulcer is frequently complicated by hemorrhage or perforation leading to high mortality rates. Mesenteric infarction, even when diagnosed early still remains a serious comp
