Chagas' disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi infection, is ranked as the most serious parasitic disease in Latin America. Nearly 30% of infected patients develop life-threatening complications, and with a latency of 10-30 years, mostly Chagas' heart disease which is currently the major cause of morbidity and mortality in Latin America, enormously burdening economic resources and dramatically affecting patients' social and labor situations. Because of increasing migration, international tourism and parasite transfer by blood contact, intrauterine transfer and organ transplantation, Chagas' hear

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) and animal African trypanosomiasis (AAT) are significant health concerns throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. Funding for tsetse fly control operations has decreased since the 1970s, which has in turn limited the success of campaigns to control the disease vector. To maximize the effectiveness of the limited financial resources available for tsetse control, this study develops and analyzes spatially and temporally dynamic tsetse distribution maps of Glossina subgenus Morsitans populations in Kenya from January 2002 to December 2010, produced using the Tset

OBJECTIVE: While few population-based studies on the economic burden of functional bowel disorders (FBD) have been published from developing countries like Iran, this study aimed to estimate their direct and indirect costs for five groups of patients: irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional constipation (FC), unspecified-FBD (U-FBD), functional abdominal bloating (FAB) and functional diarrhea (FD).
METHODS: Up to 18,180 adults randomly sampled from Tehran, Iran (2006-2007) were interviewed using two questionnaires based on the Rome III criteria to detect FBD patients and to estimate their

Cysticercosis caused by the zoonotic pork tapeworm Taenia solium is emerging as a constraint for the nutritional and economic well-being of small-holder farming communities in many underdeveloped areas of Southeast Asia. It occurs mainly in impoverished regions with inadequate sanitation, poor pig management practices and lack of meat inspection and control. Neurocysticercosis, the most serious form of the disease, is considered the most common parasitic infection of the human nervous system and the most frequent preventable cause of epilepsy in the developing world. Although theoretically eas

Camelpox is an economically important contagious skin disease of camelids caused by camelpox virus (CMLV) and is characterized by mild local skin infection and less common severe systemic infections. The disease is confined to camel-rearing belts particularly in developing countries and causes economic impact due to considerable loss in terms of morbidity, mortality, loss of weight and reduction in milk yield. The virus has gained attention from researchers due to its recent emergence with close genetic relatedness to variola virus, the causative agent of smallpox, and carrying genes responsib

Leptospirosis is the most widespread zoonosis throughout the world and human mortality from severe disease forms is high even when optimal treatment is provided. Leptospirosis is also one of the most common causes of reproductive losses in cattle worldwide and is associated with significant economic costs to the dairy farming industry. Herds are tested for exposure to the causal organism either through serum testing of individual animals or through testing bulk milk samples. Using serum results from a commonly used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test for Leptospira interrogans serov

OVERVIEW: Dental treatment modalities for ectodermal dysplasia (ED) vary markedly depending on the clinical manifestations, but to date there have been no studies exploring the potential economic impact of ED. On the basis of anecdotal and clinical reports, the authors postulate that costs of dental treatment for this condition can have a substantial financial impact on patients and their families.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the authors' pilot study was to develop an economic model for various treatment modalities for ED with severe hypodontia.
METHODS: The authors first used a comprehensive

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the public health and economic burden of endemic canine rabies in Africa and Asia.
METHODS: Data from these regions were applied to a set of linked epidemiological and economic models. The human population at risk from endemic canine rabies was predicted using data on dog density, and human rabies deaths were estimated using a series of probability steps to determine the likelihood of clinical rabies developing in a person after being bitten by a dog suspected of having rabies. Model outputs on mortality and morbidity associated with rabies were used to calculate an imp

About one third of the economical costs, which are due to death, sickness and life quality deficits in higher developed industrial countries, are caused by pollutants such as nicotine, alcohol and false eating habits. Within a period of one year 183,000 people in Germany die on tobacco associated sickness effects, 73,000 on direct or indirect aftermath of alcohol usage and a proportional amount of mostly adipoptic people on the hereoff resulting sickness effects. These risk trias, decided by every person mainly for himself by his own behaviour or mis-behaviour, are even aggravated by the free

BACKGROUND: In order to reduce protein-energy malnutrition in older people during hospitalisation an early interdisciplinary intervention is needed. We developed a protocol which includes screening for malnutrition, dysphagia and dehydration on admission, followed by immediate interventions.
OBJECTIVE: To assess effectiveness of the protocol on nutritional status, hospital-acquired infections and pressure sores, and to evaluate the protocol s economical feasibility.
DESIGN: Prospective, controlled study.
SETTING: The inpatient geriatric service of a university hospital (UMC Nijmegen) and a

The aim of the study was to explore the influences on the perceptions of potential risks of pregnancy in a developing country. The perceptions were analyzed in order to construct a local explanatory model of health which could be compared to the activities promoted by the health services. The relationship of perceptions of risk to women's reported motivation for using the health services is assessed. The findings are presented in relation to four specific research questions: 1, How do women view the state of being pregnant? 2, What potential risks are associated with being pregnant? 3, How are

The Black pregnant teen is a microcosm of the impact of society on the most vulnerable. Who is the pregnant adolescent? What racial and ethnic connotations are implied? What is the quality of her progeny? What health risks and mortality attend Black pregnant adolescents? What measures are indicated to address teen pregnancy? Health providers must more intensively address the essentials of the socio-medical phenomenon of Black teenage pregnancy. The United States leads other developed countries of the world by substantial margins in births to teenagers, ranging from 3/1,000 in Japan to 52/1,000

Quality assurance is a touchy subject: difficult to implement, time-demanding and expensive. The goal of quality assurance is to assist both the patients and the physicians. In addition to legal requirements, quality assurance is necessary for medical as well as economical reasons. It makes sense that the license to practice medicine does not automatically entail the right to perform all medical procedures; the development of new methods and the insights won from important scientific studies necessitates constant training. Furthermore, the decreasing allocation of funds for medical care combin

A triethanolamine (TEOA)-catalyzed, one-pot, three-component reaction of 4-hydroxycoumarin, aldehydes, and malononitrile was developed as a highly atom-economic domino protocol for the synthesis of biologically significant 4H-pyrano[3,2-c]coumarins. This cascade sequence proceeds through the successive formation of three new σ bonds (two C-C and one C-O). The protocol exhibited a broad substrate scope and proceeded rapidly and efficiently in methanol at ambient temperature or in water at 85 °C. 4H-Pyrano[3,2-c]coumarins were isolated in 51-95% yields using a simple workup without column chroma

This project addresses the challenge of controlling Dermanyssus gallinae infestations in poultry farms. A cohort-based model is developed that couples the pharmacokinetics of Fluralaner (Exzolt ®) in the plasma of laying hens with the dynamics of the mites, enabling the simulation of various treatment administration strategies while balancing costs. The study reveals that administering a reduced dose of Fluralaner (Exzolt ®) at high frequencies, in conjunction with a customized infestation tolerance threshold for each farm, provides a cost-effective solution for mite control. Specifically, thi

A Pd/Tl bimetallic catalytic method for the regioselective C8-H alkenylation of dimethoxycoumarin scaffolds was developed. The synergistic effects of Tl(OCOCF3)3 and a Pd-thioether ligand catalytic system enabled electrophilic C-H bond activation, followed by Heck-type alkenylation at the C8 position of the coumarin ring, affording a series of C8-alkenylated dimethoxycoumarin derivatives in yields of up to 90%. Notably, the bimetallic catalytic system promoted electrophilic C-H activation of electron-rich coumarin scaffolds using only a catalytic amount of Tl(OCOCF3)3, enabling efficient C-H f

The Begomovirus genus is a prominent group of viruses that are transmitted by the whitefly vector, Bemisia tabaci, and have been known to cause significant yield reductions in several economically important crops worldwide. Among these viruses, the mungbean yellow mosaic India virus is particularly problematic, causing substantial yield losses in mungbean and proving difficult to control. Therefore, developing new techniques to study the vector-virus systems involving begomoviruses is a research priority for mungbean and other crops affected by these viruses. In this chapter, we present a tech

Crises may bring people together or drive them apart. However, it is not clear whether crises undermine or enhance social cohesion or how such effects might develop over time. We compare four types of crises-natural hazards, pandemics, economic downturns, and wars-to explain their effects on social cohesion from an interdependence theoretical perspective. We argue that social cohesion depends on how much people depend on each other and the government, the (un)equality of these dependencies, and whether people's interests conflict or align. Based on our theory-guided review, we conclude that th
