Optic Nerve Sheath Meningiomas: A National Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Database Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Optic nerve sheath meningioma (ONSM) is a rare optic nerve cancer with considerable morbidity. This national analysis validates previously known ONSM concepts while providing insight into novel risk factors. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program was queried from 2000 to 2019 for all histologic subtypes of meningioma primary to the optic nerve. Relevant clinical and demographic variables were analyzed. Asymptotic one-sample test for binomial proportions and Cox proportional hazards modeling evaluated the significance of factor associations. RESULT

COVID-19 (Omicron strain) hospital admissions from a virtual ward - who required further care?

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 virtual ward was created to provide care for people at home with COVID-19. Given this was a new model of care, little was known about the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients requiring admission to hospital from the virtual ward platform. The aims were to characterise hospital admission volume, patient epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and outcome from a virtual ward in the setting of an Omicron (BA.1, BA.2) outbreak. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was performed for all virtual ward patients admitted from 1st January 2022 to 25th March

Impact of precipitation on the prevalence of schistosomiasis mekongi in Lao PDR: Structural equation modelling using Earth observation satellite data.

Increasing attention is being given to the effect of climate change on schistosomiasis, but the impact is currently unknown. As the intermediate snail host (Neotricula aperta) of Schistosoma mekongi inhabits the Mekong River, it is thought that environmental factors affecting the area of water will have an impact on the occurrence of schistosomiasis mekongi. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of precipitation on the prevalence of human schistosomiasis mekongi using epidemiological data and Earth observation satellite data in Khong district, Champasak province, Lao PDR. Struc

Hepatitis C screening and detection program in a large population: Epidemiological transition and characterization of the disease.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is considered an important public health challenge. Traditionally identified risk factors have undergone an epidemiological transition where other risk factors have become the main cause of new infections. OBJECTIVE: To describe risk factors associated to hepatitis C positivity through the evaluation of the epidemiological profile in hepatitis-C high-risk populations. METHODS: Cross-sectional study was conducted as part of an HCV screening program in Mexican population. All participants answered an HCV risk-factor questionnaire and took a rapid test (R

A comparison of quasi-experimental methods with data before and after an intervention: an introduction for epidemiologists and a simulation study.

BACKGROUND: As the interest in and use of quasi-experimental methods to evaluate impacts of health policies have dramatically increased in the epidemiological literature, we set out this study to (i) systematically compare several quasi-experimental methods that use data before and after an intervention and contrast their performance within a simulation framework while providing a brief overview of the methods; and (ii) discuss challenges that could arise from using these methods as well as directions for future research in the context of epidemiological applications. METHODS: We considered s

Male Infertility and the Risk of Developing Testicular Cancer: A Critical Contemporary Literature Review.

Background and Objectives: The relationship between male infertility (MI) and testicular cancer (TC) is bilateral. On one hand, it is well-established that patients diagnosed with TC have a high risk of pre- and post-treatment infertility. On the other hand, the risk of developing TC in male infertile patients is not clearly defined. The objective of this review is to analyze the histopathological, etiological, and epidemiological associations between MI and the risk of developing testicular cancer. This review aims to provide further insights and offer a guide for assessing the risk factors f

Systematic Literature Review Shows Gaps in Data on Global Prevalence and Birth Prevalence of Sickle Cell Disease and Sickle Cell Trait: Call for Action to Scale Up and Harmonize Data Collection.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited monogenic disorder with high prevalence throughout sub-Saharan Africa, the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East, and India. Sources of SCD epidemiology remain scarce and fragmented. A systematic literature review (SLR) to identify peer-reviewed studies on SCD epidemiology was performed, with a search of bibliographic databases and key conference proceedings from 1 January 2010 to 25 March 2022 (congress abstracts after 2018). The SLR followed PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Meta-analyses, using a

Epidemiological Investigation of Meningeal Worm-Induced Mortalities in Small Ruminants and Camelids Over a 19 Year Period.

Meningeal worm, or Parelaphostrongylus tenuis (P. tenuis) is a nematode parasite that can invade the nervous system of small ruminant and camelid species such as alpaca, llama, goats and sheep. Limited reports exist on the epidemiology of disease caused by the nematode in susceptible livestock. We examined archived necropsy reports from small ruminant and camelid mortalities that were submitted, post mortem, to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (MNVDL) during 2001-2019 for gross necropsy, histopathology, and pathogen screening. We estimated P. tenuis-induced mortalit

Pituitary Adenomas as a Barometer for Health Care Access.

Introduction  Expanding access to care has been shown to impact patient care and disease epidemiology for different disease states, but has not been studied in pituitary adenoma. We hypothesize that increasing access to care-which includes diagnostics-through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Medicaid expansion has increased identification of pituitary adenomas. Methods  The National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was utilized to identify patients with pituitary adenomas from 2007-to 2016 yielding 39,120 cases. Demographic, histologic, and insurance dat

Environmental predictors of filarial infection in Amazonian primates: Ecological factors and primate filarial infection.

Filarial nematode infections are common in primates, but have received little attention in the Neotropics. Epidemiological data on filarial infections in primates are still too sparse to fully understand the complex of this parasitism, especially because of the difficulty in studying the ecology and epidemiology of wild primates.. We describe natural infections by Dipetalonema parasitizing 211 primates belonging to eight free-living primate genera in Amazonia, and assess the relationships between parasitic indicators and climatic (rainfall and river level), ecological (fruiting periods of plan

A Tale of Three Recent Pandemics: Influenza, HIV and SARS-CoV-2.

Emerging infectious diseases are one of the main threats to public health, with the potential to cause a pandemic when the infectious agent manages to spread globally. The first major pandemic to appear in the 20th century was the influenza pandemic of 1918, caused by the influenza A H1N1 strain that is characterized by a high fatality rate. Another major pandemic was caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), that started early in the 20th century and remained undetected until 1981. The ongoing HIV pandemic demonstrated a high mortality and morbidity rate, with discrepant impacts in di

Frequency of placental malaria and its associated factors in northwestern Colombia, pooled analysis 2009-2020.

Knowledge about placental malaria (PM) is insufficient in the world, and incipient in Colombia where studies are few and recent. In this country, PM has been reported by Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium falciparum, and mixed infection. The objective was to determine the frequency of PM and its associated clinical-epidemiological factors in mothers and neonates in northwestern Colombia, 2009-2020. A Retrospective pooled analysis with 602 placentas captured in five investigations. The diagnosis of PM was made with thick blood smear (TBS) and qPCR. The groups with and without PM were compared using t

Constructing and validating a transferable epidemic risk index in data scarce environments using open data: A case study for dengue in the Philippines.

Epidemics are among the most costly and destructive natural hazards globally. To reduce the impacts of infectious disease outbreaks, the development of a risk index for infectious diseases can be effective, by shifting infectious disease control from emergency response to early detection and prevention. In this study, we introduce a methodology to construct and validate an epidemic risk index using only open data, with a specific focus on scalability. The external validation of our risk index makes use of distance sampling to correct for underreporting of infections, which is often a major sou

Spatio-temporal dynamics of dengue-related deaths and associated factors.

Since the reintroduction of dengue viruses in 1987, Sao Paulo State (SP), Brazil, has experienced recurrent epidemics in a growing number of municipalities, each time with more cases and deaths. In the present study, we investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of dengue-related deaths and associated factors in SP. This was an ecological study with spatial and temporal components, based on notified dengue-related deaths in the municipalities of SP between 2007 and 2017. A latent Gaussian Bayesian model with Poisson probability distribution was used to estimate the standardized mortality ratios

Incidence and Prevalence of Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Population-Based Studies.

Thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA) may grow asymptomatically until they rupture, with a mortality over 90%. The true incidence and prevalence of this condition is uncertain and epidemiologic data is scarce, understudied and dispersed. Therefore, we aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the incidence and prevalence of TAAs in population-based studies. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and CENTRAL from inception to October 2020 for all population-based studies reporting on incidence and/or prevalence of TAAs. Data were pooled using a random effects model. The main outcome was the over

Comorbidity of obsessive-compulsive disorder and symptoms with nicotine dependence: Observational epidemiologic evidence from US-representative and psychiatric outpatient population-based samples.

Despite emerging evidence linking obsessive-compulsive disorder and symptoms (OCS) and nicotine dependence (ND), this comorbidity has received little research. To address this, the current investigation highlights evidence of this comorbidity in two epidemiologic datasets: (1) US nationally-representative survey (i.e., National Comorbidity Study-Replication; NCS-R), and (2) a psychiatric clinical epidemiology dataset (i.e., the Methods to Improve Diagnostic Assessment and Services; MIDAS). For NCS-R (n = 2088), interviews were carried as part of extensive data collection, including OCS symptom

Brucellosis in Iranian livestock: A meta-epidemiological study.

Brucellosis is a widespread zoonotic disease affecting human and livestock health. This meta-epidemiological study is aiming to draw a comprehensive picture of the Brucella prevalence in Iranian livestock, trying to estimate most affected subgroups as well as the most appropriate methods and sampling conditions for brucellosis screening programs. A literature search was performed among data published between 1 January 1970 and July 2020. Different subgroups were compared according to animal species, gender, age, sampling season, sampling locations as well as the diagnostic method used for bruc

Epidemiology, morbidity and mortality in Behçet's disease: a cohort study using The Health Improvement Network (THIN).

OBJECTIVES: The epidemiology of Behçet's disease (BD) has not been well characterized in the UK. Evidence on the risk of cardiovascular disease, thromboembolic disease and mortality in patients with BD compared with the general population is scarce. METHODS: We used a large UK primary care database to investigate the epidemiology of BD. A retrospective matched cohort study was used to assess the following outcomes: risk of cardiovascular, thromboembolic disease and mortality. Controls were selected at a 1:4 ratio (age and gender matched). Cox proportional hazard models were used to derive adj
