Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency: diagnosis and treatment.

Pancreatic insufficiency is a major consequence of pancreatic diseases leading to a loss of pancreatic parenchyma, obstruction of the main pancreatic duct, decreased pancreatic stimulation, or acid-mediated inactivation of pancreatic enzymes. In addition, gastrointestinal and pancreatic surgical resections are frequent causes. Clinical manifestations include abdominal cramps, steatorrhea and malnutrition. Malnutrition, the main contributing factor of weight loss, has been related to a high morbidity and mortality secondary to an increased risk of malnutrition-related complications and cardiova

Helminth community structure in birds of prey (Accipitriformes and Falconiformes) in southern Italy.

We compared helminth communities in 6 species of birds of prey from the Calabria region of southern Italy. In total, 31 helminth taxa, including 17 nematodes, 9 digeneans, 3 acanthocephalans, and 2 cestodes, were found. All helminth species were observed in the gastrointestinal tract, except for 3 spirurid nematodes. Most of the parasite species were detected in at least 2 hosts, but 13 helminth species were found in only 1 host. At the infracommunity level, the overall species richness and Brillouin's index of diversity varied by host, with the highest values in a generalist feeder, the Euras

Carotenoid intake does not affect immune-stimulated oxidative burst in greenfinches.

Carotenoid-based integument colouration is extremely widespread in the animal kingdom. It has been hypothesized that carotenoid colouration is used for communicating the health status of the bearers because carotenoids are efficient immunomodulators or antioxidants. However, the latter argument has been recently debated and the mechanisms by which carotenoids modulate immunity or oxidative balance are poorly known. We performed an experiment on wild-caught captive greenfinches, passerine birds with carotenoid-based plumage colouration, in order to test whether dietary carotenoid supplementatio

Guided self-help for disordered eating: A randomised control trial.

Treatment guidelines recommend evidence-based guided self-help (GSH) as the first stage of treatment for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. The current randomised control trial evaluated a cognitive behavioural therapy-based GSH pack, 'Working to Overcome Eating Difficulties,' delivered by trained mental health professionals in 6 sessions over 3 months. It was congruent with the transdiagnostic approach and so was intended as suitable for all disordered eating, except severe anorexia nervosa. Eighty one clients were randomly allocated to either a GSH or waiting list condition. Eating d

Effects of herbal preparation on libido and semen quality in boars.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a preparation from herbal extracts (PHE) on libido and semen quality in breeding artificial insemination boars. Ten fertile boars were divided into control and experimental groups according to significant difference of libido. There were no differences in semen quality between groups. Animals were fed a commercial feeding mixture for boars. The feeding mixture for the experimental group was enriched with PHE, which was prepared from Eurycoma longifolia, Tribulus terrestris and Leuzea carthamoides. Duration of the experiment was 10 w

Local and systemic effects of two herbivores with different feeding mechanisms on primary metabolism of cotton leaves.

Caterpillars and spider mites are herbivores with different feeding mechanisms. Spider mites feed on the cell content via stylets, while caterpillars, as chewing herbivores, remove larger amounts of photosynthetically active tissue. We investigated local and systemic effects of short-term caterpillar and spider mite herbivory on cotton in terms of primary metabolism and growth processes. After short-term caterpillar feeding, leaf growth and water content were decreased in damaged leaves. The glutamate/glutamine ratio increased and other free amino acids were also affected. In contrast, mild sp

Effect of intestinal erythrocyte agglutination on the feeding performance of Triatoma brasiliensis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Triatoma brasiliensis is an important vector of Trypanosoma cruzi in Brazil. The feeding efficiency on its hosts depends on several parameters including the maintenance of the ingested blood at low viscosity, which could be modulated by the anterior midgut (crop) anticoagulant and haemagglutinant activities. In the present study, we characterized T. brasiliensis crop haemagglutination activity and evaluated its importance in the feeding process. Soluble crop contents (SCC) of T. brasiliensis were able to agglutinate rat, mouse and rabbit eryhtrocytes, but had no activity on cattle and Thrichom

Repellence of the red bud borer Resseliella oculiperda from grafted apple trees by impregnation of rubber budding strips with essential oils.

The red bud borer Resseliella oculiperda (Rübs.) is a pest insect of apple trees when rootstocks are grafted with scion buds by 'shield budding'. The female midges are attracted to the wounds of the grafted buds where they lay their eggs. The larvae feed on the cambium and destroy the buds completely or partially, leading to bad union of the buds with the rootstocks. Budding strips are used very often by growers to bind scion buds to rootstocks. These strips cannot prevent midges from reaching the damaged tissue. Chemical treatments applied to the grafts and other types of strip do not provide

Is there a place for obesity in DSM-V?

OBJECTIVE: To revisit the merits and problems inherent in considering obesity, or some aspect of obesity, as a mental or behavioral disorder. METHOD: The author suggests shifting the focus from the state of obesity to the process of nonhomeostatic overeating that results in obesity. Studies are reviewed that pertain to various models of nonnormative overeating including eating disorder models that stress the form of overeating, substance use disorder models focusing on its consequences, and affect regulation or stress response models focusing on its function. RESULTS: Studies focusing on abn

Effect of eating rate on binge size in Bulimia Nervosa.

Bulimia Nervosa (BN) is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating. During binge eating episodes, patients often describe the rapid consumption of food, and laboratory studies have shown that during binges patients with BN eat faster than normal controls (NC), but the hypothesis that a rapid rate of eating contributes to the excessive intake of binge meals has not yet been experimentally tested. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of eating rate on binge size in BN, in order to determine whether binge size is mediated, in part, by rate of eating. Thirteen

Role of brainstem TRH/TRH-R1 receptors in the vagal gastric cholinergic response to various stimuli including sham-feeding.

Pavlov's pioneering work established that sham-feeding induced by sight or smell of food or feeding in dogs with permanent esophagostomy stimulates gastric acid secretion through vagal pathways. Brain circuitries and transmitters involved in the central vagal regulation of gastric function have recently been unraveled. Neurons in the dorsal vagal complex including the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMN) express thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) receptor and are innervated by TRH fibers originating from TRH synthesizing neurons in the raphe pallidus, raphe obscurus and the parapyramidal r

Taste, salience, and increased NaCl ingestion after repeated sodium depletions.

Previous studies have shown that repeated sodium depletions using the natriuretic-diuretic furosemide induce progressive increases in NaCl ingestion. We investigated the role of taste in this behavioral sensitization in Sprague-Dawley rats using short-term lickometer testing along with 2-h stimulated intake tests. Our results show maximal licking across a range of NaCl concentrations after each of the three depletions, regardless of whether the solutions contained sucrose or were presented alone. Similarly, the presence of sucrose did not affect stimulated NaCl intake in long-term tests, altho

Nutritional aspects of eating episodes followed by vomiting in Brazilian patients with bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: The clinical aspects of bulimia nervosa (BN) are similar in countries with different sociocultural backgrounds, but less is known about dietary composition in patients from developing countries. Little is also known about the role that nutritional aspects may play in behaviours aimed at counteracting the effects of binge eating. OBJECTIVES: To describe the daily energy intake and eating behaviour of BN patients in Brazil and compare the dietary patterns of the patients who terminated eating episodes by vomiting and those patients who did not. METHODS: Thirty patients from an eati

Postnatal development of hypothalamic inputs to the dorsal vagal complex in rats.

The hypothalamus is critically involved in energy homeostasis and is an appropriate focus for research investigating the central neural underpinnings of obesity, anorexia and normal food intake. However, little is known regarding pathways and mechanisms that convey relevant hypothalamic signals to the brainstem circuits that ultimately control ingestive behavior. This brief review highlights work investigating the postnatal development of hypothalamic inputs to the hindbrain dorsal vagal complex (DVC). Research findings indicate that these inputs are both structurally and functionally immature

Bulimia nervosa with and without obsessive-compulsive syndromes.

The present study was performed in a group of bulimic (BN) females (1) to assess prevalence rates of comorbid obsessive-compulsive phenomena; (2) to investigate whether BN patients display a characteristic cluster of obsessive-compulsive symptoms; and (3) to determine whether obsessive-compulsive symptoms influence the clinical picture of BN. Thirty-eight DSM-IV BN females were interviewed by means of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID) to assess the prevalence rate of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD); the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Symptom Scale (Y-BOCS) Symptom Che
