The relation between resting state connectivity and creativity in adolescents before and after training.

An important component of creativity is divergent thinking, which involves the ability to generate novel and useful problem solutions. In this study, we tested the relation between resting-state functional connectivity of brain areas activated during a divergent thinking task (i.e., supramarginal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, medial frontal gyrus) and the effect of practice in 32 adolescents aged 15-16. Over a period of two weeks, an experimental group (n = 16) conducted an 8-session Alternative Uses Task (AUT) training and an active control group (n = 16) conducted an 8-session rule switching

Auditory verbal hallucinations and brain dysconnectivity in the perisylvian language network: a multimodal investigation.

Neuroimaging studies of schizophrenia have indicated that the development of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) is associated with altered structural and functional connectivity within the perisylvian language network. However, these studies focussed mainly on either structural or functional alterations in patients with chronic schizophrenia. Therefore, they were unable to examine the relationship between the 2 types of measures and could not establish whether the observed alterations would be expressed in the early stage of the illness. We used diffusion tensor imaging and functional magne

Isolating event-related potential components associated with voluntary control of visuo-spatial attention.

Attention-directing cues presented at fixation evoke several lateralized event-related potential (ERP) components prior to the onset of visual targets. These components have been associated with the control of visuo-spatial attention, but the neuro-cognitive operations and neural generators of the components are still largely unknown. Here, we isolated cue-elicited ERP activity in different ways to home in on different neuro-cognitive operations and to gain a better understanding about the possible neuroanatomical sources of the cue-elicited ERP activities. To isolate lateralized cue-ERP activ

Brain perfusion SPECT in patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease: comparison of a semiquantitative and a visual evaluation.

Due to the increasing importance of early recognition and differential diagnosis of dementias, cerebral perfusion scans using "single photon emission computed tomography" (SPECT) are increasingly integrated into the examination routine. The goal of this study was to check the diagnostic validity of SPECT scans of MCI- and DAT-patients, two subgroups out of 369 persons with etiologically unclear cognitive dysfunction, which underwent an assessment program for probable dementia including cognitive testing, cranial computed tomography, ultrasound, routine laboratory testing including vascular ris

Proton T1 relaxation times of cerebral metabolites differ within and between regions of normal human brain.

Saturation recovery spectra (STEAM) were acquired at 1.5 T with 7 TRs ranging from 530 to 5000 ms and a constant TE of 30 ms in voxels (7.2 ml) located in occipital grey, parietal white and frontal white matter (10 subjects each location). Spectra were also acquired at 7, 21 and 37 degrees C from separate 100 mm solutions of inositol (Ins), choline-containing compounds (Cho), N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) and creatine. Simulations of T(1) fits with 2, 3 and 7 TRs demonstrated that at typical SNR there is potential for both inaccurate and biased results. In vivo, different metabolites had significan

Diffusion-weighted imaging in neonatal cerebral infarction: clinical utility and follow-up.

We describe the clinical utility of echo-planar diffusion-weighted imaging in neonatal cerebral infarction. Eight full-term neonates aged 1 to 8 days referred for neonatal seizures were studied. Patients were followed for a mean of 17 months with detailed neurologic examinations at regular intervals. Head computed tomography (CT) and conventional magnetic resonance (MRI) and diffusion-weighted images were obtained. Percent lesion contrast was evaluated for 19 lesions on T2-weighted and diffusion-weighted images. Follow-up conventional MRIs were obtained in seven patients. The findings on diffu

[Decimeter radiothermometry in the diagnosis of brain tumors].

The authors used a new noninvasive method, decimeter radiothermometry, to measure cerebrocranial temperature in 68 patients with brain tumors. It made it possible to study the mean temperature of a tissue layer situated at a depth of 3-5 cm from the surface to an accuracy of up to +/- 0.1 degrees C. Temperature anomaly at the site of the tumor projection was revealed in three fourths of cases, mainly when it was localized laterally. Cerebrocranial temperature was compared with the morphological structure of the tumor. The diagnostic value of the method in tumors of the brain is demonstrated.

Navigating the Uncommon: "Juvenile-Onset Huntington Disease".

Progressive neurodegeneration with the movement disorder can be challenging to diagnose. In this article, we present a 12-year-old female child with stroke and progressive neurocognitive decline that was followed by choreo-athetoid movements and worsening dystonia and epilepsy. There was diffuse cortical involvement with predominant frontal-parietal lobes involved, affecting speech and bladder bowel control. Despite no significant family history, the genetic evaluation helped us to diagnose the rare condition. We also discuss the various challenges faced while managing and diagnosing the patie

The co-occurrence of multiple sclerosis and bipolar disorder: A case series on clinical and neuroimaging correlates.

There is a dearth of studies on neuroimaging correlates of Bipolar Disorder (BD) in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We describe the clinical profile and neuroimaging findings of four cases of MS with BD. Among them, two patients had multiple mood episodes preceding the neurological symptoms, one had concurrent manic and neurological symptoms, and one had multiple depressive episodes and an isolated steroid-induced manic episode. Frontal and temporal lobes, and Periventricular White Matter were involved in all four cases, and hence may be considered biological substrates of BD in MS. Larger studies ar

Gnathiapipinde sp. nov. (Crustacea, Isopoda, Gnathiidae), a temporary parasite of the pufferfish, Amblyrhynchoteshonckenii, from temperate southern Africa.

A new species, Gnathiapipinde sp. nov., is described from specimens taken from pufferfish, Amblyrhynchoteshonckenii, at Chintsa and De Hoop Nature Reserve on the southern Indian Ocean coast of South Africa. Gnathiapipinde sp. nov. is characterised by the straight frontal margin, presence of conical superior frontolateral process, a strong and bifid mediofrontal processes, pronounced and pointed supraocular lobes, mandible strongly curved with a dentate blade, and the claviform penes produced more than a third the length of the pereon. A summary and key to the males of all known species of the

Sellar fracture followed by sudden death: an autopsy case.

The authors describe a case of sellar fracture followed by sudden death. The victim was involved in a wrangle. The autopsy revealed facial damage and sellar fracture and no evidence of cerebral damage, except for a mild subarachnoid hemorrhage in the left parietotemporal regions and undersurface of both frontal lobes. Sellar fracture is a rare and severe entity, associated with serious complications, which is frequently diagnosed postmortem. In any case, death is rarely a direct consequence of the sellar fracture itself and is usually considered to be the result of associated cerebral trauma. …

Esthesioneuroblastoma: A case report and review of the literature.

Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm of the nasal cavity. We report the case of a middle aged man who presented with a 6-months history of progressive nasal obstruction, watering of the eye, headache and occasional epistaxis. A diagnosis of esthesioneuroblastoma was established by histopathology and confirmed by immunohistochemistry. On staging the mass was classified as a kadish stage C tumor. The mass was excised via a craniofacial resection through a bi-coronal approach and the tumor mass was peeled away completely from the frontal lobe dura. The patient under…

Prenatal MR findings of the middle interhemispheric variant of holoprosencephaly.

We report a case of the middle interhemispheric variant of holoprosencephaly (MIH) with noncleavage of the posterior portion of the frontal lobes and the parietal regions in a fetus at 22 weeks' gestation. To our knowledge, this is the first case of the rare MIH variant to be diagnosed in utero by use of ultrafast MR imaging and one of the few such reports to document gross and microscopic pathologic findings. Neuroimaging results correlated with those of gross and microscopic pathologic specimens obtained from the stillborn child. We conclude that ultrafast MR imaging can accurately distingui…

A case of narcolepsy-cataplexy associated with distemper encephalitis.

Narcolepsy associated with localized brain lesions is described in a 10-month-old Argentine Dogo. Neurological examination and MRI study suggested an inflammatory lesion of the left frontal lobe. Postmortem examination revealed diffuse encephalitis in the forebrain and marked necrotic lesions in the ventral pontine area. Immunohistochemistry for distemper virus antigen showed positive staining of the cytoplasm of many neurones of the pons and cerebral cortex. The pathological pattern was suggestive of post-vaccinal distemper encephalitis and the localization of the lesions was consistent with …

The hippocampus in aging and Alzheimer's disease.

The role of imaging in the evaluation of neurodegenerative disorders is summarized. The primary role of imaging is to exclude potentially treatable disorders such as meningioma, extracerebral hematoma, Wernicke's disease, and hypothyroidism. Atrophic changes dominate in the hippocampal region on Alzheimer's disease versus the anterior, frontal, and temporal lobes in Pick's disease. Signal hypointensity in the putamen on T2-weighted spin-echo images favors poorly drug-responsive Parkinson's disease whereas putaminal hyperintensity is observed with Creutzfeldt-Jacob, Wilson's, and Leigh's diseas

Esthesioneuroblastoma presenting as an orbital mass in a young child.

A 3-year-old boy presented with uniocular proptosis and ophthalmoplegia. Investigation revealed a mass involving the right orbit with extension into the left orbit and paranasal sinuses, and intracranial extension involving both frontal lobes. Biopsy of an enlarged cervical node and the intranasal mass revealed esthesioneuroblastoma. This tumor has been reported rarely in a child this age, and only 12 case reports document patients under 10 years of age. The presentation as an orbital mass is previously unreported and must now be considered in the differential diagnosis of proptosis in childho…

[Magnetic resonance of the brain and Achilles tendon in cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis].

We report a 31 year old patient with cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis who presented with dementia, tendinous xanthomas, cataracts, pyramidal involvement, cerebellar ataxia and peripheral neuropathy. Cerebral CT scan demonstrated diffuse hypodensity in the white matter in both cerebellar hemispheres while MR detected additional focal alterations in both frontal lobes. MR study of the Achilles tendon showed a diffuse enlargement of the tendon with multiple areas of hypersignals in T1 and T2 demonstrative of the lipid deposits, interpossed between the isosignal zones that may correspond to the infl…

Intracranial dissemination of an ACTH secreting pituitary neoplasm--a case report and review of the literature.

A 52-year-old woman developed recurrent hypercortisolism 3 yr after successful surgical treatment of Cushing's disease. At postmortem, eosinophilic pituitary tissue showing positive ACTH immunohistochemical staining was present in the frontal lobe and cerebellum but there was no tumor in the sella. In the absence of a pituitary tumor, extrasellar ACTH producing tissue could arise from seeding of the cerebrospinal fluid with tumor cells at the time of operation or from an atypical pituitary carcinoma. In this report we review the mechanisms of intracranial dissemination of pituitary tissue and …
