AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the rate of hepatitis B and C virus infection and emphasize the importance of hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination in leukemic children.
METHODS: One hundred and sixty children who were treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Pediatric Hematology Unit were included in the study. They were 71 (44.4%) girls and 89 (55.6%) boys with a mean age of 6.45 +/- 3.87 years.

We describe 2 children with cobalamin G disease, a disorder of vitamin B12 metabolism with normal serum B12 levels. They presented with megaloblastic anemia progressing rapidly to severe thrombotic microangiopathy. In infants presenting with acute thrombotic microangiopathy, cobalamin disorders should be considered early as diagnosis and targeted treatment can be lifesaving.

OBJECTIVES: We piloted an intervention to determine if support from a case manager would assist adults being investigated for tuberculosis (TB) to link into TB and HIV care.
DESIGN: Pilot interventional cohort study.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Patients identified by primary healthcare clinic staff in South Africa as needing TB investigations were enrolled.
INTERVENTION: Participants were supported for 3 months by case managers who facilitated the care pathway by promoting HIV testing, getting laboratory results, calling patients to return for results and facilitating treatment initiation.

Furan (C(4)H(4)O) is a volatile, colorless liquid and is used in some segments of the chemical manufacturing industry. It is found in variety of foods such as coffee, jarred and canned foods that undergo heat treatment. This study was designed to investigate the effect of furan exposure on reproductive system of male rats. Three to four weeks old rats were exposed to furan at 2, 4 and 8 mg/kg/day doses by orally for 90 days. Hematology, weights, histology and morphometry of reproductive organs, serum LH and testosterone levels, sperm count and morphology and apoptosis in testis were evaluated.

The importance of HLA donor-recipient matching in unrelated haematopoietic SCT (HSCT) is the subject of debate. In this retrospective study, we analyzed 805 adult patients from the Italian Registry receiving HSCT for a haematological malignancy from January 1999 to June 2006 and correlated the degree of HLA matching with transplant outcome.
