BACKGROUND: Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) is a running-related injury of the lower extremities. After returning to competition, there are often recurring episodes of MTSS. Therefore, it is important to prevent the onset and recurrence of MTSS among long-distance runners. This case-control study aimed to compare the kinematics and kinetics of runners with and without previous MTSS during running to clarify the biomechanical characteristics of the lower extremity of runners with previous MTSS.
METHODS: Thirteen male long-distance runners aged over 18 years and asymptomatic at the time of

OBJECTIVE: The Achilles tendon (AT) is the most frequently ruptured in the human body. Literature describing different immobilization methods' impact on tendon healing after AT repair is lacking. We compare plaster cast, splint, and K-wire to determine which is the most stable and has the fewest complications.
METHODS: Sixty rats aged 5-6 months were selected to establish Achilles tendon injury in two hind legs model. After suturing the ends of the AT together with a modified "Kessler" method (Prolene 5-0). The skin incision was interrupted and sutured with 1-0 thread. Rats were divided into

This study examines the use of computer-aided analysis to evaluate the biomechanical performance of Schanz screws made from different additive manufacturing materials (Ti6Al4V, 316 L, Inconel 625, and Inconel 718) in a pertrochanteric fixator for the treatment of intertrochanteric femoral fractures. Intertrochanteric fractures (ITFs) are severe traumas often seen in the elderly population and can lead to serious consequences. The primary objective of ITF surgery is to provide stability and allow for early ambulation and rehabilitation. The Pertrochanteric Fixator is a surgical implant used to

Anterior knee pain (AKP) is one of the most common conditions to bring active young patients to a sports injury clinic. It is a heterogeneous condition related to multiple causative factors. Compared to the general population, there appears to be a higher risk of development of patellofemoral osteoarthritis in patients with AKP. AKP can be detrimental to the patient's quality of life and, in the larger context, significantly burdens the economy with high healthcare costs. This study aims to present a comprehensive evaluation of AKP to improve clinical daily practice. The causes of AKP can be t

BACKGROUND: With an increase in the elderly population, the occurrence of hip fractures, femoral neck fractures, and intertrochanteric fractures (ITFs) is also increasing. It is important to establish effective perioperative methods that would help reduce the morbidity and mortality rates associated with ITFs. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of ITFs according to the AO classification for perioperative hemoglobin drop.
METHODS: Seventy-six patients with ITFs classified as AO 31-A1 or A2 and fixated with intramedullary nails participated in this retrospective cohort study

BACKGROUND: Considering the excellent results already achieved in total hip arthroplasty (THA), new implants must be at least as safe as currently used implants and lead to longer survival. A new cementless femoral stem, SP-CL®, has been introduced. The aim of this study is to evaluate intraoperative complications and assess the risk factors of THA with the SP-CL® implant.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All THA patients who were operated on using the SP-CL® (LINK, Hamburg, Germany) implant between 2015 and 2018 were included in the analysis. Data were collected from medical records from national and

BACKGROUND: Hip fractures represent the most common injury and the main cause of morbidity and mortality among patients 65 years and older. About 20% of all femoral neck fractures (FNFs) are non-displaced or valgus impacted, for which internal fixation with the cannulated screws system (CSS) is indicated.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to identify predictors of early failure of CSS.
METHODS: Patients with non-displaced FNFs (Garden type I and II) treated operatively using the CSS were enrolled. Their characteristics, Pauwels angle, and posterior tilt were assessed and related with outcomes.

BACKGROUND: After total knee arthroplasty (TKA) surgery, a decline in muscle strength is associated with a decrease in function. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effect of a further 24 weeks of hospital-based resistance training under supervision, and precise dose on knee functional recovery and daily activities for female TKA patients.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients who underwent unilateral primary TKA were allocated into either resistance training (RT) (n = 14) or control (CON) (n = 15) groups. All patients were assessed, with an isokinetic dynamometer, for hip and knee flexor an

Manual material handling is associated with shoulder musculoskeletal disorders, especially for women. Sex differences in glenohumeral muscle activity may contribute to women's higher injury risk by affecting shoulder load and stability. We assessed the effects of sex (25 women vs 26 men) and lifting load (6 kg vs 12 kg) on muscle activation during box lifting from hip to eye level. Surface and intramuscular electromyography were recorded from 10 glenohumeral muscles. Most muscles were more activated for the heavier box and for women. These effects were larger for 'prime movers' than for stabil

BACKGROUND: A kinematically aligned (KA) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is expected to improve patient satisfaction, but its effect remains controversial. We investigated differences in patient-reported outcomes (PROs) between KA and non-KA TKAs using an implant that reproduces anatomical geometry.
METHODS: TKAs for varus deformity were performed in consecutive 129 patients (149 knees) via a measured resection technique with conventional instruments. The femorotibial angle (FTA), hip-knee-ankle angle (HKAA), and the angle between the joint line and the line perpendicular to the mechanical axis

Arthrogenic muscle inhibition, an inability to fully activate the quadriceps muscles, has been persistently observed after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLr) surgery. Reductions in quadriceps activation may be partly due to the flexion reflex pathway, hamstrings activation, and reciprocal quadriceps inhibition. Since central fatigue has been shown to modify hamstring excitability and change the hamstring reflex response, hamstring fatigue might alleviate quadriceps muscle inhibition by counteracting the flexion reflex. In this study, nine young adult athletes (age: M = 19.9 years
