Validity of Self-Reported Mosquito Bites to Assess Household Mosquito Abundance in Six Communities of Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador.

Mosquito-borne diseases are a global burden; however, current methods of evaluating human-mosquito contact rates are expensive and time consuming. Validated surveys of self-reported mosquito bites may be an inexpensive way to determine mosquito presence and bite exposure level in an area, but this remains untested. In this study, a survey of self-reported mosquito bites was validated against household mosquito abundance from six communities in Esmeraldas, Ecuador. From February 2021 to July 2022, households were interviewed monthly, and five questions were used to ask participants how often th

Sex Differences in Atrial Fibrillation and Associated Complications in Hypertensive Patients with Left Ventricular Hypertrophy: The LIFE Study.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on whether biological differences account for the higher risk of stroke seen in females compared to males with atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: Capitalizing on The Losartan Intervention for Endpoint study, a multicenter randomized clinical trial randomizing 9,193 patients and followed for at least four years, we aimed to identify sex differences in the risk of stroke in the presence of AF in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). RESULTS: 342 Patients had a history of AF, and 669 developed new-onset AF. History of AF and new-ons

Sex Differences in Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Levels Are Dependent on Ceramide Synthase 1 and Ceramidase in Lung Physiology and Tumor Conditions.

Sex is a biological variable that can reflect clinical outcomes in terms of quality of life, therapy effectiveness, responsiveness and/or toxicity. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a lipidic mediator whose activity can be influenced by sex. To evaluate whether the S1P axis underlies sex 'instructions' in the lung during physiological and oncological lung conditions, sphingosine and S1P were quantified in the blood of healthy (H) volunteers, lung adenocarcinoma (ADK) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) patients of both sexes. S1P receptors and their metabolic enzymes were evaluated in the tissues

Hermaphroditic origins of anisogamy.

Anisogamy-the size dimorphism of gametes-is the defining difference between the male and female sexual strategies. Game-theoretic thinking led to the first convincing explanation for the evolutionary origins of anisogamy in the 1970s. Since then, formal game-theoretic models have continued to refine our understanding of when and why anisogamy should evolve. Such models typically presume that the earliest anisogamous organisms had separate sexes. However, in most taxa, there is no empirical evidence to support this assumption. Here, we present a model of the coevolution of gamete size and sex a

Gender-Specific Impact of Sex Hormones on the Immune System.

Sex hormones are key determinants of gender-related differences and regulate growth and development during puberty. They also exert a broad range modulation of immune cell functions, and a dichotomy exists in the immune response between the sexes. Both clinical and animal models have demonstrated that androgens, estrogens, and progestogens mediate many of the gender-specific differences in immune responses, from the susceptibility to infectious diseases to the prevalence of autoimmune disorders. Androgens and progestogens mainly promote immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory effects, whereas es

Traumatic brain injury history and baseline symptoms outweigh sex differences for risk of concussion in a sample of collegiate athletes.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) prior to the collegiate pre-season is associated with risk for re-injury. We also investigate sex differences, cognitive functioning, and self-reported concussion symptoms and their associations with concussion risk. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study consisting of collegiate athletes (n = 212) who completed consecutive preseason evaluations (P1 and P2) between 2012 and 2015, averaging 12.9 (SD = 4.2) months apart. RESULTS: There were 40 new concussions recorded between P1 and P2, 21 (53%) of which were among

Sex-Gender-Based Differences in Metabolic Diseases.

Sexual dimorphism creates different biological and cellular activities and selective regulation mechanisms in males and females, thus generating differential responses in health and disease. In this scenario, the sex itself is a source of physiologic metabolic disparities that depend on constitutive genetic and epigenetic features that characterize in a specific manner one sex or the other. This has as a direct consequence a huge impact on the metabolic routes that drive the phenotype of an individual. The impact of sex is being clearly recognized also in disease, whereas male and females are

Mechanisms and consequences of sex differences in immune responses.

Biological sex differences refer to differences between males and females caused by the sex chromosome complement (that is, XY or XX), reproductive tissues (that is, the presence of testes or ovaries), and concentrations of sex steroids (that is, testosterone or oestrogens and progesterone). Although these sex differences are binary for most human individuals and mice, transgender individuals receiving hormone therapy, individuals with genetic syndromes (for example, Klinefelter and Turner syndromes) and people with disorders of sexual development reflect the diversity in sex-based biology. Th

Sex-Related Differences in Patient Characteristics, Risk Factors, and Symptomatology in Older Adults with Pulmonary Embolism: Findings from the SERIOUS-PE Study.

Sex-specific factors are implicated in pulmonary embolism (PE) presentation in young patients, as indicated by increased risk in pregnancy. Whether sex differences exist in PE presentation, comorbidities, and symptomatology in older adults, the age group in which most PEs occur, remains unknown. We identified older adults (aged ≥65 years) with PE in a large international PE registry replete with information about relevant clinical characteristics (RIETE registry, 2001-2021). To provide national data from the United States, we assessed sex differences in clinical characteristics and risk factor

Sex-specific difference in cardiac function in patients with systemic sclerosis: association with cardiovascular outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular involvement is one of the leading causes of mortality in systemic sclerosis (SSc) and is reported to be higher in men as compared with women. However, the cause of this difference is largely unknown. The objective of this study was to assess sex differences in echocardiographic characteristics, including left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV GLS), as a potential explanation of sex differences in outcomes. METHODS: A total of 746 patients with SSc from four centres, including 628 (84%, 54±13 years) women and 118 (16%, 55±15 years) men, were evaluated with s

Single-cell RNA sequencing reveals the role of cell heterogeneity in the sex difference in primary hyperparathyroidism.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the difference in parathyroid tissue-derived cells between male and female PHPT patients. METHODS: Resected parathyroid tissues were collected from PHPT patients of both sexes. Single cells were isolated and sequenced for RNA expression profiles. The cell sequencing data were annotated by cell type, followed by population analysis, functional analysis, pathway analysis, cell communication analysis, differential gene expression analysis, and pseudotime trajectory analysis. The subcluster analyses were also performed in the parathyroid cells. RESULTS: No substantial diffe

Sex Differences in Adult Facial Three-Dimensional Morphology: Application to Gender-Affirming Facial Surgery.

Background: Gender-affirming facial surgery (GFS) is pursued by transgender individuals who desire facial features that better reflect their gender identity. Currently, there are a few objective guidelines to justify and facilitate effective surgical decision making. Objective: To quantify the effect of sex on adult facial size and shape through an analysis of three-dimensional (3D) facial surface images. Materials and Methods: Facial measurements were obtained by registering an atlas facial surface to 3D surface scans of 545 males and 1028 females older than 20 years of age. The differences b

Sex Differences and Utility of Treadmill Testing in Long-QT Syndrome.

Background Diagnosis of congenital long-QT syndrome (LQTS) is complicated by phenotypic ambiguity, with a frequent normal-to-borderline resting QT interval. A 3-step algorithm based on exercise response of the corrected QT interval (QTc) was previously developed to diagnose patients with LQTS and predict subtype. This study evaluated the 3-step algorithm in a population that is more representative of the general population with LQTS with milder phenotypes and establishes sex-specific cutoffs beyond the resting QTc. Methods and Results We identified 208 LQTS likely pathogenic or pathogenic KCNQ

A comparison of neighbourhood level variation and risk factors for affective versus non-affective psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Studies typically highlight area level variation in the incidence of non-affective but not affective psychoses. We compared neighbourhood-level variation for both types of disorder, and the specific effects of neighbourhood urbanicity and ethnic density, using Danish national registry data. METHODS: Population based cohort (2,224,464 people) followed from 1980 to 2013 with neighbourhood exposure measured at age 15 and incidence modelled using multilevel Poisson regression. RESULTS: Neighbourhood variation was similar for both disorders with an adjusted median risk ratio of 1.37 (

The role of physical environmental characteristics and intellectual disability in conduct problem trajectories across childhood: A population-based Cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The paucity of research investigating the role of the physical environment in the developmental progression of conduct problems and the potential moderating effects of intellectual disability (ID) is surprising, given the clinical relevance of elucidating environmental determinants of disruptive behaviours. AIMS: To use data from a large UK cohort study to assess associations between physical environmental exposures, ID, and conduct problem trajectories. METHOD: The sample included 8168 Millennium Cohort Study children (1.9% with ID). Multilevel growth curve modelling was used to

Recreational tobacco consumption and food insecurity among First Nations in Canada.

OBJECTIVE: Crowding-out effects of tobacco consumption refers to the situation in which tobacco consumption reduces a household's spending on other commodities. In this paper, we test for the crowding-out effects of recreational tobacco consumption on food expenditures among on-reserve Indigenous communities in Canada. METHODS: We use data from household expenditure surveys (N=469) to investigate tobacco consumption behaviour of on-reserve households of six First Nation communities in Canada. Using conditional Engel curves, we estimate the crowding-out effects of spending on tobacco on budget

Housing mobility protects against alcohol use for children with socioemotional health vulnerabilities: An experimental design.

PURPOSE: Neighborhood context may influence alcohol use, but effects may be heterogeneous, and prior evidence is threatened by confounding. We leveraged a housing voucher experiment to test whether housing vouchers' effects on alcohol use differed for families of children with and without socioemotional health or socioeconomic vulnerabilities. TRIAL DESIGN: In the Moving to Opportunity (MTO) study, low-income families in public housing in five US cities were randomized in 1994 to 1998 to receive one of three treatments: (1) a housing voucher redeemable in a low-poverty neighborhood plus housi
