Aspirin reduces blood cholesterol in copper-deficient rats: a potential antioxidant agent?

The purpose of this study was to examine whether the hypocholesterolemic effect of aspirin is to due to its antioxidant properties. Oxidative stress was induced in rats by feeding them a copper-deficient diet. Copper deficiency reduced the activity of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and lowered liver copper concentration but elevated liver iron. The combination of reduced SOD activity, high liver iron, and low liver copper resulted in an oxidative stress assessed by increased liver lipid peroxidation compared with copper-adequate controls. In addition, copper-deficient rats exhibited ele

Common blood disorders: a primary care approach.

Many anemias and diseases of the blood-forming elements increase in incidence with advancing age. Iron deficiency remains the cause of most cases of anemia and may be related to inapparent blood loss. Other responsive anemias that can be managed by the primary care physician include vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies and drug- or autoimmune-related hemolytic anemia. Nonresponsive anemias, including hematologic malignancies, are quite common in older patients and require referral to a specialist. Platelet disorders are often produced by certain drugs and, like most refractory anemias, often re

[An insufficiency of essential trace elements and its manifestations in pathology].

There exist 11 essential elements (iron, copper, iodine, zinc, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, manganese, nickel, selenium and fluorine) vitally important for human health. The deficiency of these trace elements results in many pathological processes, including such world-wide human diseases, as iron-deficient anemias and other forms of hyposiderosis, endemic hypothyroid goiter, endemic fluorine deficiency states, particularly manifested by dental caries in children and osteoporosis of the advanced age. Selenium deficiency causes endemic cardiopathy in China, is a risk factor for the development

Reticulocyte Hemoglobin Equivalent (Ret-He) Combined with Red Blood Cell Distribution Width Has a Differentially Diagnostic Value for Thalassemias.

As a type of congenital microcytic hypochromic anemia, thalassemia trait is often confused with other conditions, such as congenital sideroblastic anemia (CSA) and iron deficiency anemia, before a specific work-up is performed. However, these tests, including hemoglobin (Hb) electrophoresis, gene mutations and Prussian blue staining after bone marrow aspirate, are relatively expensive, time-consuming and invasive. To find labor-saving parameters to facilitate differential diagnosis, we retrospectively analyzed the routine blood indexes of 59 thalassemia trait cases [22 α-thalassemia (α-thal),

Decreased expression of genes involved in sulfur amino acid metabolism in frataxin-deficient cells.

Inherited deficiency of the mitochondrial protein frataxin causes neural and cardiac cell degeneration, and Friedreich's ataxia. Five hypotheses for frataxin's mitochondrial function have been generated, largely from work in non-human cells: iron transporter, iron-sulfur cluster assembler, iron-storage protein, antioxidant and stimulator of oxidative phosphorylation. We analyzed gene expression in three human cell types using microarrays, and identified just 48 transcripts whose expression was significantly frataxin-dependent in at least two cell types. Significant decreases in seven transcrip

The Irony of Iron Pill Gastritis: A Case of Delayed Recognition and Persistent Injury in an Elderly Patient.

Iron pill gastritis is an underrecognized complication of oral solid iron supplementation, particularly in elderly patients. We present the case of an 83-year-old male with a history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, type II diabetes, and chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease who developed gastric ulcers and erosions after three months of ferrous sulfate therapy for iron deficiency anemia. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed nonbleeding ulcers and erosions, and biopsies confirmed iron pill gastritis. Despite recommendations to switch to liquid iron, the patient continued using solid tablets,

Iron-enriched rice: the case for labeling.

ABSTRACT Genetically modified rice that incorporates twofold to threefold increased amounts of iron is being developed. The product could provide improved nutrition to iron-deficient persons but may be a health hazard to large numbers of humans who are prone to iron overload. Clinical disorders such as African siderosis, beta-thalassemia, hemochromatosis, and alcoholic siderosis are of special concern. Conditions associated with iron loading include fatigue and depression; arthritis; endocrine disorders such as stunted growth, impotence, and diabetes; gastrointestinal maladies; infections and
