Acquired apraxia of speech: features, accounts, and treatment.

The features of apraxia of speech (AOS) are presented with regard to both traditional and contemporary descriptions of the disorder. Models of speech processing, including the neurological bases for apraxia of speech, are discussed. Recent findings concerning subcortical contributions to apraxia of speech and the role of the insula are presented. The key features to differentially diagnose AOS from related speech syndromes are identified. Treatment implications derived from motor accounts of AOS are presented along with a summary of current approaches designed to treat the various subcomponent

Defensive burying in rodents: ethology, neurobiology and psychopharmacology.

Defensive burying refers to the typical rodent behavior of displacing bedding material with vigorous treading-like movements of their forepaws and shoveling movements of their heads directed towards a variety of noxious stimuli that pose a near and immediate threat, such as a wall-mounted electrified shock-prod. Since its introduction 25 years ago by Pinel and Treit [J. Comp. Physiol. Psychol. 92 (1978) 708], defensive (shock-prod) burying has been the focus of a considerable amount of research effort delineating the methodology/ethology, psychopharmacology and neurobiology of this robust and

The prevention and identification of reading disability.

There is abundant evidence that intervention for the prevention of reading disability is effective in dramatically reducing the prevalence of reading disability. This article explores the current state of knowledge regarding the causation and prevalence of reading disability, along with evidence that the incidence of this condition can be dramatically reduced through quality intervention. Specifically, we (1) explore what is known about the nature and causes of reading disability, (2) examine how reading disability can best be identified, and (3) estimate the percentage of children that have s

Mechanisms of action in the treatment of anxiety.

Anxiety and depressive disorders share many features, suggesting a common set of physiologic substrates. Recent research has indicated that mood can be categorized into 3 components by factor analysis: (1) somatic anxiety (a factor relatively specific to panic disorder), (2) anhedonic depression (which includes symptoms related to motivation and enjoyment and found to be specific to depression), and (3) general distress (a factor that cuts across all depressive and anxiety disorders studied). Antidepressant drugs, particularly serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin receptor modulators, ar

Can recovery from depression be achieved?

Even though a variety of treatments are available for depression, many patients experience an incomplete response, resulting in chronic functional impairment. The authors present a therapeutic heuristic that derives, in part, from a body of research that suggests that symptoms of mood disorders can be separated into three distinct components: somatic anxiety, which is most prominent in anxiety disorders, such as panic; anhedonia or low positive affect, which is most specific to depression; and general distress, which is present with both anxiety and depressive disorders. General distress and s

Freud's early clinical theory (1894-1896): outline and context.

The author points out that all Freud's publications and lectures from the period 1894-1896 had the aim of establishing an aetiological theory of the neuroses and psychoses. Freud found that the clinical pictures covered by the theory had a sexual aetiology and were distinguishable from each other by specific mechanisms. Numerous references are presented to show that what the author calls Freud's early clinical theory had its roots in contemporary neuropathology and psychiatry, and the prevailing views in these disciplines are discussed. He was able to build on the work of predecessors such as

Inflammation and the mental state before an acute coronary event.

Feelings of exhaustion have been found to belong to the precursors of acute coronary events. Guided by the current views of the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes, a two-stage model describing a feedback relationship between mental state and the disease process is presented. According to the presented model prolonged exposure to stress results in a state of exhaustion leading to increased susceptibility to inflammatory diseases. Inflammation, in turn, amplifies feelings of exhaustion and malaise through cytokine release. Results of a study of 15 exhausted and 15 nonexhausted angioplasty

[Transitory global amnesia--psychogenic origin of organic disease? Psychopathologic basis and pathogenetic considerations].

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an acute amnestic syndrome without neurological symptoms and remitting spontaneously. Though cerebral ischemia, epilepsy, and migraine have been implicated in some cases, non of these factors could be proven responsible for most, and etiology remains unclear. Of special interest is the induction of TGA by psychological and emotional stress in about 14-29% of all cases, which is illustrated by the clinical example of a 72-year-old women who suffered an attack of TGA after discovering a burglary in her home. Psychopathological and pathogenetic aspects are discus

Personality variables and disorders in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

All dominant models of the eating disorders implicate personality variables in the emergence of weight concerns and the development of specific symptoms such as bingeing and purging. Standardized measures of personality traits and disorders generally confirm clinical descriptions of restricting anorexics as constricted, conforming, and obsessional individuals. A less consistent picture suggesting affective instability and impulsivity has emerged from the assessment of subjects with bulimia nervosa. Considerable heterogeneity exists within eating disorder subtypes, however, and a number of spec

Childhood experience, interpersonal development, and reproductive strategy: and evolutionary theory of socialization.

The concept of "reproductive strategy" drawn from the field of behavioral ecology is applied to the study of childhood experience and interpersonal development in order to develop an evolutionary theory of socialization. The theory is presented in terms of 2 divergent development pathways considered to promote reproductive success in the contexts in which they have arisen. One is characterized, in childhood, by a stressful rearing environment and the development of insecure attachments to parents and subsequent behavior problems; in adolescence by early pubertal development and precocious sexu

The death surround: factors influencing the grief experience of survivors.

Factors surrounding the death of a loved one can have a profound impact on the grief experience of survivors. This study examined the relationship between participation in a hospice program of care, place of death, length of illness prior to death, and the grief experience of survivors of patients who have died of cancer. Sixty survivors responded to the Grief Experience Inventory (GEI). Survivors of terminally ill people who participated in a hospice program prior to the death showed decreased feelings of guilt, dependency, loss of control, despair, numbness, shock, and disbelief. Survivors o

The changing nature of agoraphobic fears.

Recent factor analytic studies have emphasized the importance of both somatic and situational fears in agoraphobia. Franklin (1980) proposed a developmental model of agoraphobic fears in which somatic changes (interoceptive fears), and feared consequences such as panic (outcome fears), produce situational fears through misattribution. Five hypotheses derived from this model were tested on 60 agoraphobics who rated their original and current fears. In all subjects interoceptive and outcome fears relating to panic attacks developed before situational fear and avoidance. Initially outcome fears w

Effects of chronic d-amphetamine on social behavior of the rat: implications for an animal model of paranoid schizophrenia.

Hooded rats in a social colony were given increasing daily doses of d-amphetamine up to 8 mg/kg. Time-lapse 16 mm cinematographically recorded behavior was analyzed for the following: grooming, feeding, sex, sleeping, resting, sterotypy, agonistic behavior, muricidal activity, and the location and movement of each rat. Subordiant rats receiving d-amphetamine actively withdrew from social interactions by retreating to strategically defensible locations in the environment. They remained hypervigilant of other rats and overreacted to their approaches by either fleeing or by defensively rearing an

Neurodivergence and well-being: The fulfilment of fundamental psychological needs, work-related stress and life satisfaction.

This paper presents two complementary studies on the impact of neurodivergent conditions such as autism, AD(H)D, dyslexia/dyscalculia and giftedness on well-being. In Study 1, survey data from 2157 participants in a true probabilistic sample of Dutch households show that respondents with autism and ADHD report significantly lower life satisfaction and higher levels of stress and maladjustment than neurotypical peers. Other conditions present more nuanced patterns. Study 2 builds on Self-Determination Theory and uses Large Language Models (LLMs) to analyse 2214 Reddit life stories, evaluating t

Depolymerization of aquaporin-4 orthogonal array particles via the A25Q mutation does not cause behavioral deficits but confers resilience to chronic unpredictable mild stress.

Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) formed orthogonal array particles (OAPs) is critical for brain water homeostasis and astrocytic function, but whether OAP structural integrity influences behavior or stress susceptibility is unknown. Using knock-in mice carrying the AQP4-A25Q mutation, which depolymerizes OAPs without altering AQP4 expression, we investigated baseline behavior and responses to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). Naïve AQP4-A25Q mice showed no anxiety- or depression-like behavior differences from wild-type (WT) mice, indicating OAP disassembly alone does not cause behavior deficit disor

Histone 3 Trimethylation Patterns are Associated with Resilience or Stress Susceptibility in a Rat Model of Major Depression Disorder.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a severe and multifactorial psychiatric condition. Evidence has shown that environmental factors, such as stress, significantly explain MDD pathophysiology. Studies have hypothesized that changes in histone methylation patterns are involved in impaired glutamatergic signaling. Based on this scenario, this study aims to investigate histone 3 involvement in depression susceptibility or resilience in MDD pathophysiology by investigating cellular and molecular parameters related to i) glutamatergic neurotransmission, ii) astrocytic functioning, and iii) neurogene

Increased alcohol self-administration following exposure to the predator odor TMT in active coping female rats.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) are highly comorbid. Additionally, individual differences in response to stress suggest resilient and susceptible populations. The current study exposed male and female Long Evans rats to the synthetically produced predator odor 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline (TMT) to examine individual differences in stress-reactive behaviors (digging and immobility) and whether these differences were related to subsequent alcohol drinking. Male and female Long Evans rats were trained on operant alcohol self-administration. After 9 se
