Radiomics-clinical nomogram for preoperative lymph node metastasis prediction in esophageal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: This research aimed to develop a radiomics-clinical nomogram based on enhanced thin-section CT radiomics and clinical features for the purpose of predicting the presence or absence of metastasis in lymph nodes among patients with resectable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS: This study examined the data of 256 patients with ESCC, including 140 cases with lymph node metastasis. Clinical information was gathered for each case, and radiomics features were derived from thin-section contrast-enhanced CT with the help of a 3D slicer. To validate risk factors that are in

Gingiva squamous-cell carcinoma in a non-smoking patient with occupational exposure to solvent siphoning using mouth: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: While overall head and neck cancer incidence decreases due to reduced tobacco and alcohol consumption, the incidence of HPV negative oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is raising in several industrialized countries, especially in non-smoking and non-drinking patients. CASE PRESENTATION: We document a case of gingiva SCC in a 56 years old never-smoker patient reporting low alcohol consumption and unusual occupational solvent exposure. The HPV-negative lesion was surgically removed in 2018, and the patient remains in complete remission 4 years after recurrent surgery in 2019.

Petticoat cancer: Marjolin ulcer of the waist in South Asian women (a site-specific malignancy).

A saree is a garment worn by women in the Indian subcontinent. It is usually wrapped around the body and secured over an ankle-length skirt (a petticoat). The petticoat is usually tied very tightly around the waist with a cord. The tight cord of the petticoat often leads to dermatoses related to chronic friction and maceration, resulting in dermatitis and depigmentation. In rare cases, chronic friction may lead to the development of squamous cell carcinoma. In the literature, these skin lesions, including malignant transformation, have been described as 'saree cancers', but it is the tightness

Focal 18 F-FDG uptake predicts progression of pre-invasive squamous bronchial lesions to invasive cancers.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-invasive squamous lesions of the central airways can progress into invasive lung cancers. Identifying these high-risk patients could enable detection of invasive lung cancers at an early stage. In this study, we investigated the value of 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) scans in predicting progression in patients with pre-invasive squamous endobronchial lesions. METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients with pre-invasive endobronchial lesions, who underwent an 18 F-FDG PET scan at the VU University Medical Center Amsterdam, between J

Malignant Melanoma Arising from Esophageal Melanosis and Synchronous with Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND Primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus is a rare disease. However, its exact etiology and progression from melanosis to malignant melanoma have not been elucidated due to its rarity. CASE REPORT We report a case of esophageal melanosis that progressed to malignant melanoma and was synchronous with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. A male patient in his 60s was diagnosed with right hypopharyngeal cancer. Cervical dissection and chemoradiation therapy were performed. Esophageal melanosis was discovered using gastrointestinal endoscopy during a pre-treatment screening 2 years la

External Beam Radiotherapy Interdigitated with High Dose Rate(HDR) Intracavitary Brachytherapy versus External Beam Radiotherapy followed by Sequential HDR Intracavitary Brachytherapy for Locally Advanced Carcinoma Cervix-Randomized Control Study.

BACKGROUND: In cervical cancer treatment, overall treatment time (OTT) is an important prognostic factor. This study compares the clinical outcomes when High-Dose-Rate Intracavitary-Brachytherapy(HDR-ICRT) is interdigitated with external beam radiotherapy(EBRT) versus sequential HDR-ICRT after EBRT in the treatment of locally advanced carcinoma cervix. METHODS: Histologically confirmed carcinoma cervix patients [FIGO Stage IIB-IVA (except IIIC-2)] were included and randomized into two groups. The study group received EBRT 50Gy in 25 fractions with interdigitated HDR-ICRT 7Gy per fraction week

Squamous cell carcinoma in the setting of hidradenitis suppurativa: a retrospective review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Marjolin ulcer is an SCC arising from chronic inflammatory tissue. Such ulcers pose a high risk for metastasis; the 5-year survival rate of 40% to 69% suggests that improvement is possible with early diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To raise awareness and update education in the medical community regarding this manifestation of SCC. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective literature review specifically for SCC arising in the context of HS. A PubMed search yielded 81 articles reporting SCC in the context of HS from 1958 to November 2022, with a total of 123 cases. The authors' additio

Network analysis reveals miRNA crosstalk between periodontitis and oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the malignant tumors with a poor prognosis. Periodontitis (PD is considered a high-risk factor for OSCC, but the genetic mechanism is rarely studied. This study aims to link OSCC and PD by identifying common differentially expressed miRNAs (Co-DEmiRNAs), their related genes (Hub genes), transcription factors (TFs), signaling pathways, enrichment functions, and compounds, and searching for genetic commonalities. METHODS: The miRNAs expression datasets of OSCC and PD were searched from the GEO database. The miRNA and related crosstalk me

[Periodontitis Promotes the Progression of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma by Inducing Macrophage M2 Polarization].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of periodontitis in the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and to determine whether periodontitis microorganisms induce M2 macrophage (M2) polarization and promote tumor progression. METHODS: The tumor tissues of OSCC patients with periodontitis and those without periodontitis were collected and immunohistochemistry tests were done to validate the trend of changes in M2 macrophages. A mouse model of OSCC accompanied by periodontitis was established by treating mice with drinking water containing four antibiotics for three consecutive days, ap

A Targeted, Personalized Management Strategy in Advanced Penile Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a rare malignancy with poor outcomes in advanced stages, with dismal response and survival rates using conventional surgical and systemic options. Additionally, the ability to detect and monitor residual disease with current imaging modalities remains difficult. Therefore, advances in multimodal management and disease monitoring are desperately needed. We present a case of advanced PSCC utilizing multimodal management informed by next-generation sequencing and circulating tumor DNA monitoring. These genomic techniques were valuable in guiding management

Mosaic Chromosomal Alterations Are Associated With Increased Lung Cancer Risk: Insight From the INTEGRAL-ILCCO Cohort Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Mosaic chromosomal alterations (mCAs) detected in white blood cells represent a type of clonal hematopoiesis (CH) that is understudied compared with CH-related somatic mutations. A few recent studies indicated their potential link with nonhematological cancers, especially lung cancer. METHODS: In this study, we investigated the association between mCAs and lung cancer using the high-density genotyping data from the OncoArray study of INTEGRAL-ILCCO, the largest single genetic study of lung cancer with 18,221 lung cancer cases and 14,825 cancer-free controls. RESULTS: We identif

Inherited epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica and squamous cell carcinoma- A case report.

Epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica (EBD) is an inherited disease of the structural proteins in the upper dermis, characterized by blister formation at the site of trauma followed by scarring. Skin fragility and blistering are the hallmarks of this disease. Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a dreadful complication in the epidermolysis bullosa (EB) patients and common cause of death. The recent advances in distinct tumor microenvironment explain the aggressive nature of SCC in recessive Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (RDEB) patients and the use of collagen VII re-expression
