Beneficial effects and potential risks of tomato consumption for human health: An overview.

Tomato and its derived products have a very interesting nutritional value in addition to prominent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. Tomatoes are generally quite safe to eat. However, overall consumption varies from individual to individual. Indeed, either beneficial or harmful effects of plants or their derived products are closely related to quality, including the presence of biologically active compounds. On the other hand, the synthesis and accumulation of these bioactive molecules depends on many other factors, such as environmental conditions. In this sense, this

Successful surgical treatment of left atrioesophageal fistula following atrial ablation.

A 69-year-old male had catheter-based ablation for atrial fibrillation. He was admitted with high fever and had neurological disorder; he was diagnosed with atrioesophageal fistula by CT scan. Intraoperative findings showed that the fistula existed adjacent to the left lower pulmonary vein with a vegetation. The esophageal fistula was repaired, and the left atrial fistula was closed. A nasogastric tube tip was placed in the esophagus for decompression and advanced into the stomach for nutritional support. After vomiting, the patient showed loss of consciousness and left hemiplegia. CT scan rev

Medical Conditions in the First Years of Life Associated with Future Diagnosis of ASD in Children.

This study examines medical conditions diagnosed prior to the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Using a matched case control design with 3911 ASD cases and 38,609 controls, we found that 38 out of 79 medical conditions were associated with increased ASD risk. Developmental delay, mental health, and neurology conditions had the strongest associations (ORs 2.0-23.3). Moderately strong associations were observed for nutrition, genetic, ear nose and throat, and sleep conditions (ORs 2.1-3.2). Using machine learning methods, we clustered children based on their medical conditions prior t

[Bowel obstruction by hamartomatous polyp in a pediatric patient with tuberous sclerosis].

Tuberous sclerosis is an autosomal dominant disorder with a wide clinical spectrum of disease. It is characterized by development of benign tumors in multiple organs due to a disturbance in cellular growth and differentiation. It usually affects skin, brain, heart and kidney. Gastrointestinal involvement is rare and mainly restricted to adults and sigmoid colon and rectum. In children there are only two cases; our patient would be the third. We present a patient with tuberous sclerosis who began at the first month of life with repeated intestinal subocclusion. The videocolonoscopy showed a mas

Rapunzel syndrome: a rare cause of hypoproteinaemia and review of literature.

Rapunzel syndrome is an extremely rare condition associated with trichophagia (hair eating disorder) secondary to a psychiatric illness called trichotillomania (hair-pulling behaviour). It is most commonly seen in children and adolescents. Untreated cases can lead to a number of complications. We present a case of a middle-aged woman with sudden intractable vomiting and constipation associated with bilateral pedal oedema and significant weight loss. Laboratory investigations revealed low serum protein levels. Laparotomy was performed, and a hairball was removed from her stomach and ileum. The

Unraveling the role of Mg(++) in osteoarthritis.

Mg(++) is widely involved in human physiological processes that may play key roles in the generation and progression of diseases. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a complex joint disorder characterized by articular cartilage degradation, abnormal mineralization and inflammation. Magnesium deficiency is considered to be a major risk factor for OA development and progression. Magnesium deficiency is active in several pathways that have been implicated in OA, including increased inflammatory mediators, cartilage damage, defective chondrocyte biosynthesis, aberrant calcification and a weakened effect of ana

[Current Topics on Vitamin D. Vitamin D and chronic kidney disease].

CKD-MBD is a new clinical concept which defines a systemic disorder of mineral and bone metabolism as a result of CKD. Although various mineral metabolic factors are involved in its pathogenesis, alteration in vitamin D metabolism plays a crucial role among them. Vitamin D receptor activators (VDRAs), which are traditionally considered a cardinal treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism, have attracted lots of attention for their potential pleiotropic effects through the activation of the vitamin D receptor expressed in multiple organs. In recent years, the deficiency of vitamin D in CKD pat

Anorexia nervosa and bone metabolism.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by self-induced starvation with a lifetime prevalence of 2.2% in women. The most common medical co-morbidity in women with AN is bone loss, with over 85% of women having bone mineral density values more than one standard deviation below an age comparable mean. The low bone mass in AN is due to multiple hormonal adaptations to under nutrition, including hypothalamic amenorrhea and growth hormone resistance. Importantly, this low bone mass is also associated with a seven-fold increased risk of fracture. Therefore, strategies to effect

Plant polyphenols in the treatment of age-associated diseases: revealing the pleiotropic effects of icariin by network analysis.

Polyphenols are a broad class of compounds. Some are ingested in substantial quantities from nutritional sources, more are produced by medicinal plants, and some of them are taken as drugs. It is becoming clear, that a single polyphenol is impacting several cellular pathways. Thus, a network approach is becoming feasible, describing the interaction of a single polyphenol with cellular networks. Here we have selected icariin to draw a prototypic network of icariin activities. Icariin appears to be a promising drug to treat major age-related diseases, like neurodegeneration, memory and depressiv

Neonatal eosinophilic gastroenteritis: possible in utero sensitization to cow's milk protein.

Rectal bleeding in neonates is an alarming sign that suggests a possible serious underlying condition, such as infection or bleeding disorder that would necessitate hospitalization and prompt intervention. We report a case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis caused by cow's milk protein allergy in a one-day- old infant, who presented with frankly bloody stools associated with massive gastrointestinal and peripheral blood eosinophilia prior to initiation of enteral feedings. The patient's outcome was favorable, with complete spontaneous recovery in one week, after a period of bowel rest, parenteral

Life-saving electroconvulsive therapy in a patient with near-lethal catatonia.

A young woman with bipolar I disorder and comorbid catatonia on enteral nutrition from several months, developed a form of near-lethal catatonia with weight loss, pressure sores, muscle atrophy, electrolyte imbalance, and depression of vital signs. A compulsory treatment was necessary, and informed consent was obtained from her mother for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). After 7 ECT sessions, the patient recovered and resumed feeding. ECT may save the life of a patient with catatonia provided that legal obstacles are overcome. Clinicians should carefully evaluate patients with near-lethal cata

Wernicke's encephalopathy: expanding the diagnostic toolbox.

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is a life threatening neurological disorder that results from thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency. Clinical signs include mental status changes, ataxia, occulomotor changes and nutritional deficiency. The conundrum is that the clinical presentation is highly variable. WE clinical signs, brain imaging, and thiamine blood levels, are reviewed in 53 published case reports from 2001 to 2011; 81 % (43/53) were non-alcohol related. Korsakoff Syndrome or long-term cognitive neurological changes occurred in 28 % (15/53). Seven WE cases (13 %) had a normal magnetic resonance

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: experimental treatments and strategies for intervention.

Despite the known damaging effects of prenatal alcohol exposure, women continue to drink during pregnancy, creating a need for effective interventions and treatments for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Experimental models can be useful in identifying potential treatments, and this article describes the spectrum of experimental therapeutics that currently are being investigated, including pharmacological, nutritional, and environmental/behavioral interventions. Some treatments target the underlying mechanisms that contribute to alcohol-induced damage, protecting against alcohol's terat

Nutrition in Trauma and Critically Ill Patients.

Despite significant improvements in the practice of metabolic support of critically ill patients in recent years, malnutrition continues to be common among surgical patients, adding significantly to complications, infections, length of stay, costs, and increased mortality. Furthermore, hypercatabolism is the major metabolic response after major trauma and emergency surgery, making this patient population a unique subgroup of critically ill patients vulnerable to further decline in nutritional status. Many questions have already been answered, such as whether critically ill patients should be f

Efficacy of a multifunctional plant complex in the treatment of the so-called 'cellulite': clinical and instrumental evaluation.

'Cellulite' or more correctly oedemateous fibrosclerotic panniculopathy, or local lipodystrophy, is a common aesthetic problem for many women, visually characterized by the orange peel or dimpled look of the skin, mainly on the buttocks and thighs. The cause of cellulite is still a matter of debate. It is currently considered an endocrine-metabolic microcirculatory disorder that causes interstitial matrix alterations and structural changes in subcutaneous adipose tissue. The first step in cellulite treatment is stimulation of microcirculation and the removal of accumulated fluids and toxic ele

Dietary effects of copper and iron deficiency on rat intestine: a differential display proteome analysis.

Copper and iron are cofactors of many metallo-proteins that accomplish vital functions, such as oxygen and electron transport. Specific metabolic pathways have been selected through evolution, although still not fully elucidated, to confine the dangerous reactivity of their free ionic forms. Inadequate supply of both metals can severely affect basic physiological functions. A differential analysis of the rat intestinal proteome evidenced the following dietary copper- and iron-deficiencies, i.e., significant changes in the levels of proteins belonging to different functional classes (glucose an

Iodine deficiency in pregnant women and in their neonates in the central Anatolian region (Kayseri) of Turkey.

Severe iodine deficiency disorders may have been eradicated in many parts of the world, but milder forms still exist and may escape detection. The aim of this study was to assess the iodine nutritional status of pregnant women and their newborns, and the prevalence rates and severity of iodine deficiency in the Kayseri region, which has appeared to be iodine deficient in previous studies. A cross-sectional voluntary screening study was performed in the Maternity Unit of the University Hospital. Seventy pregnant women and their babies participated in this study. Nutrient antioxidants in gastrointestinal diseases.

Oxidative stress appears to play a role in the pathogenesis of a number of gastrointestinal disease states, including pancreatitis; gastric and duodenal ulcer disease; IBD; gastric, esophageal, and colon cancers; and hepatic injury secondary to alcohol, metal storage disorders, hepatitis, and ischemia/reperfusion injury. The nutritional antioxidants are attractive potential therapeutic and chemopreventive agents because they are inexpensive and have a relatively low toxicity profile. A word of caution should be noted: Some antioxidants, such as vitamin C, can be prooxidant under certain condit
