The burden of air pollution (PM2.5) in subnational Australian life expectancy.

Australia is renowned for having some of the cleanest air globally, yet air pollution remains a persistent issue that significantly impacts life expectancy. This study quantifies the burden of annual ambient particulate matter (PM2.5) in Australia's life expectancy: measuring life-years lost (LYL) from 2001 to 2019, considering geographical and demographic differences. Data were obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Australian Human Mortality Database, and the Centre for Safe Air. Findings indicate that dust storms and bushfires were the main sources of PM2.5 during the 19-yea…

Long-Term Exposure to Air Pollution and Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes in the Nurses' Health Study and Nurses' Health Study II.

BACKGROUND: Research has detected associations between air pollution exposure and type 2 diabetes (T2DM), but findings from large cohort studies are needed to ascertain the most influential pollutants, susceptible subpopulations, and low-level exposure associations. Our aim was to prospectively evaluate the association between long-term exposure to fine particulate matter <2.5μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and T2DM incidence in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and Nurses' Health Study II (NHSII) cohorts of US women. METHODS: Monthly PM2.5 and NO2 exposures were pr…

Exposure to Air Pollution and the Prevalence of Respiratory Symptoms in Northeast Ohio Farmworkers.

The burden of chronic respiratory disease among the Latino farmworker community remains poorly understood. We aim to evaluate the prevalence of self-reported respiratory symptoms in a cohort of Latino farmworkers and identify the association between occupational and environmental exposures and symptom burden. Utilizing participatory mapping in combination with satellite derived models of ambient air pollution exposure, we quantified estimated exposure to PM2.5 over the harvest season. Self-reported exposure to pesticides, crowded housing and tobacco were evaluated via survey, along with self-r

Short-term exposure to air pollution and risk of ischemic stroke requiring intravenous thrombolysis: a population-level analysis in Poland from the EP-PARTICLES study.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is an important non-classical cardiovascular risk factor. Ischemic stroke (IS) is an increasing healthcare challenge, with the ageing population and associated presence of atrial fibrillation worldwide. In patients with IS, intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) is an effective treatment method within 4.5 hours from symptoms onset. Our aim was to assess the association between exposure to air pollution and IVT-treated IS, allowing for high temporal precision in exposure assessment. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study including 5.4 million inha

DNA methylation: a potential mediator between air pollution exposures and asthma control.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution is known to contribute to the development and exacerbation of asthma symptoms, impacting respiratory health through complex, not yet fully understood biological mechanisms. It is hypothesized that DNA methylation (DNAm) changes triggered by air pollutants may mediate these effects on asthma symptom control. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the effects of air pollution on DNAm in peripheral blood and asthma control. We also explored whether DNAm could potentially mediate the relationship between air pollution exposure and asthma control. METHODS: This

Comparison of residential and mobility-integrated air pollution exposures from tracking campaigns and agent-based modelling in Switzerland and the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Studies investigating the health effects of long-term exposure to air pollution generally rely on the outdoor air pollution exposure assigned at the residential address. By ignoring time activity, population exposure misclassification could potentially lead to loss of precision or bias in epidemiological studies. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess how residential-based air pollution exposures compared with "real" tracking-based exposures. METHODS: We conducted two tracking campaigns in Switzerland (CH) and the Netherlands (NL) with 686 participants followed for 2 weeks with GPS tracke

Harm reduction of heated tobacco in outdoor spaces in place of burnt tobacco smoking.

The effect of heat-not-burn (HnB) tobacco in smoking practices has been evaluated in outdoor scenarios by using gas sensors. The data obtained confirmed that the use of HnB tobacco has a minimal impact on ambient suspended particles, that is, PM10 and PM2.5 levels, resulting in approximately half the effect of combustion tobacco, in line with harm reduction principles. In addition, using HnB products outdoors did not lead to high levels of VOCs in the surrounding air nor in the breath of people who use them, whether directly or through passive exposure. This contrasts sharply with the increase

Air pollutants, temperature, and road traffic noise: their impact on chronic kidney disease incidence in older individuals in Taiwan.

Limited research has examined the relationships of co-exposure to air pollutants, temperature, and road traffic noise with chronic kidney disease (CKD) incidence and the interaction between PM2.5 and temperature. To address this gap, the present study explored these associations and interactions in Taiwan. A cohort of 3041 older individuals (aged ≥55 years) was recruited in 2009 and followed until 2019. Land use regression (LUR) models were applied to estimate annual exposure levels of air pollutants (PM2.5, NO2, CO, SO2, and O3), temperature, and 24-h A-weighted equivalent sound pressure leve

The effects of exposure to ambient PM2.5 during pregnancy on septal defects in offspring: A retrospective population-based case-control study.

Recent epidemiological studies conducted over the past ten years have increasingly investigated the association between ambient air pollution exposure and the risk of congenital heart defects, yet the findings have shown considerable inconsistency across different research populations and methodological approaches. This study sought to examine the association between maternal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) during the critical first eight weeks of gestation and the risk of septal defects in offspring. A population-based case-control study in Beijing, China (2008-2012) was conducted…
