In an open study the acceptability of a newly designed vaginal ring was evaluated. The ring being developed for contraceptive purposes was made of ethylene-vinyl-acetate copolymer (EVA). In this study the ring did not contain active medication. One hundred women aged between 14 and 43 completed a questionnaire regarding their experience and satisfaction with medical termination of pregnancy at Bedford Hospital. A visual analogue score from 0-10 was used. Age, occupation, marital status, parity, previous terminations and awareness of the medical method were recorded. Additional comments were also invited. We reviewed 26 patients with 34 shoulders treated by the inferior capsular shift operation for inferior and multidirectional instability. The mean follow-up was 8.3 years. In total, 12 shoulders showed voluntary subluxation. Eight operations used an anterior and posterior approach, 11 were by the posterior route, and 15 shoulders had an anterior approach. In 30 shoulders (85%) the outcome was satisfactory and 20 (59%) scored good or excellent results on the Rowe system. A retrospective audit was made of 101 patients undergoing parathyroidectomy, performed by 20 general surgeons in the West Midlands region during 1992. The mean number of cases per surgeon was five; nine surgeons performed fewer than three parathyroidectomies. Some 57 patients had primary hyperparathyroidism. The author studied seven patients who received suction assisted lipectomy prior to classic abdominal dermolipectomies. The liposuction sessions were performed 180, 150, 60, 30, 15, 12, 8, and 5 days before the abdominoplasties. Hip arthrodesis remains an option for treatment of severe arthritis in young persons resulting primarily from osteonecrosis, congenital dysplasia, and joint sepsis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sequelae of radical prostatectomy, using a survey instrument.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ninety-three consecutively treated patients who had undergone radical prostatectomy and who had been followed-up for between 12 and 48 months (mean 22.5) were sent a questionnaire by post. Of these, 86 (92%) completed and returned the questionnaire. The mean age of the patients at time of surgery was 64 years (range 49-75) and at time of follow-up was 66 years (range 50-77).

Intolerance to rigid contact lenses in keratoconus may occur as a result of epithelial pathology or a suboptimal fitting. The application of a soft lens as a bandage makes it possible to tolerate a rigid lens over it. This study gives the results of 40 eyes in 26 patients who were consecutively fitted with a new aspheric combination lens. Thirty-five eyes (87.5%) showed no discomfort, acceptable wearing time, and visual acuity. They assessed retrospectively 17 patients who underwent unilateral total patellectomy between 1955 and 1980.
