QT and RR interval analysis in genetic cardiac diseases using the AccuQT and advanced heart rate variability methods.

The QT interval is a key indicator in assessing arrhythmia risk, evaluating drug safety, and supporting clinical diagnosis in cardiology. The QT interval is significantly influenced by heart rate so it must be accurately corrected to ensure reliable clinical interpretation. Conventional correction formulas, such as Bazett's formula, are widely utilized but often criticized for inaccuracies, either under- or overcorrecting QT intervals in different physiological conditions. The recently developed AccuQT method, utilizing transfer entropy for QT correction, has demonstrated superior consistency

Species Delimitation, Phylogenomics, and Biogeography of Sulawesi Flying Lizards: A Diversification History Complicated by Ancient Hybridization, Cryptic Species, and Arrested Speciation.

The biota of Sulawesi is noted for its high degree of endemism and for its substantial levels of in situ biological diversification. While the island's long period of isolation and dynamic tectonic history have been implicated as drivers of the regional diversification, this has rarely been tested in the context of an explicit geological framework. Here, we provide a tectonically informed biogeographical framework that we use to explore the diversification history of Sulawesi flying lizards (the Draco lineatus Group), a radiation that is endemic to Sulawesi and its surrounding islands. We empl

NUDT15 Genetic Variants in Chinese Han, Uighur, Kirghiz, and Dai Nationalities.

BACKGROUND: Thiopurines are widely used as anti-cancer and immunosuppressant agents, but have a narrow therapeutic index owing to frequent toxicity and life-threatening bone marrow suppression. The nudix hydrolase 15 (NUDT15) genetic polymorphism is strongly associated with the tolerance and myelosuppressive effect of mercaptopurine administration, but the frequency of NUDT15 variants is known to vary among different ethnic groups or nationalities. At present, the NUDT15 gene polymorphism in ethnic minorities such as the Uighur, Kirghiz, and Dai nationalities in China is unclear. PROCEDURE: D

Identifying multimorbidity clusters in an unselected population of hospitalised patients.

Multimorbidity (multiple coexisting chronic health conditions) is common and increasing worldwide, and makes care challenging for both patients and healthcare systems. To ensure care is patient-centred rather than specialty-centred, it is important to know which conditions commonly occur together and identify the corresponding patient profile. To date, no studies have described multimorbidity clusters within an unselected hospital population. Our aim was to identify and characterise multimorbidity clusters, in a large, unselected hospitalised patient population. Linked inpatient hospital episo

Long-term outcomes in patients treated with flecainide for atrial fibrillation with stable coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Class 1C antiarrhythmic drugs (AAD) have been associated with harm in patients treated for ventricular arrhythmias with a prior myocardial infarction. Consensus guidelines have advocated that these drugs not be used in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD). However, long-term data are lacking to know if unique risks exist when these drugs are used for atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with CAD without a prior myocardial infarction. METHODS: In 24,315 patients treated with the initiation of AADs, two populations were evaluated: (1) propensity-matched AF patients wit

Effects of Supervised Early Resistance Training versus standard care on cognitive recovery following cardiac surgery via median sternotomy (the SEcReT study): protocol for a randomised controlled pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Mild cognitive impairment is considered a precursor to dementia and significantly impacts upon quality of life. The prevalence of mild cognitive impairment is higher in the post-surgical cardiac population than in the general population, with older age and comorbidities further increasing the risk of cognitive decline. Exercise improves neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity and inflammatory and neurotrophic factor pathways, which may help to augment the effects of cognitive decline. However, the effects of resistance training on cognitive, functional and overall patient-reported reco

Seroprevalence of Leptospirosis among High-Risk Individuals in Morocco.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is an anthropozoonotic reemerging neglected infectious disease underreported in most developing countries. A cross-sectional study was performed between 17 and 23 February 2014 to estimate the seroprevalence of leptospirosis among high-risk populations in Casablanca (Morocco). METHODS: A total of 490 human serum samples (97.6% males) were collected in 3 high-risk occupational sites including the biggest meat slaughterhouse (n = 208), a poultry market (n = 121), and the fish market (n = 161). A total of 125 human blood samples were also collected from the general popu

Baseline Quality of Life in patients with Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a congenital group of disorders characterised by vascular malformations (capillary malformation (CM), venous malformation (VM), and lymphatic malformation (LM)) and disturbed growth regulation. The burden caused by KTS symptoms can be evaluated using Quality of Life (QoL)-measuring questionnaires. This study aimed to assess the QoL in KTS patients using the Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36) and Skindex-29 questionnaires, and to determine three grades of severity (mild, moderate and severe) according to the scores obtained. Recommendations for the nomenclature of cognitive change associated with anaesthesia and surgery-2018.

Cognitive change affecting patients after anaesthesia and surgery has been recognised for more than 100 yr. Research into cognitive change after anaesthesia and surgery accelerated in the 1980s when multiple studies utilised detailed neuropsychological testing for assessment of cognitive change after cardiac surgery. This body of work consistently documented decline in cognitive function in elderly patients after anaesthesia and surgery, and cognitive changes have been identified up to 7.5 yr afterwards. Importantly, other studies have identified that the incidence of cognitive change is simil

Facial soft tissue depth of a contemporary adult Greek population.

Facial approximation is a technique that involves constructing the facial muscles and applying a suitable facial soft tissue depth (FSTD) dataset. To date, several FSTD studies have been conducted for varying population groups. This study aims to establish a FSTD dataset of an adult Greek population sample for the first time. The facial depths of subjects were measured on 100 head CT scans of 50 male and 50 female subjects aged from 18 to 99. The 3D head and skull models of subjects were segmented in Amira 6.1 by using histogram method. FSTDs were measured at 22 cranial landmarks (5 mid-sagitt

Neonatal group B streptococcus disease in developing countries: are we ready to deploy a vaccine?

Group B streptococcus (GBS) disease is the leading cause of neonatal sepsis in developed countries and has high case fatality rates. In developing countries, however, the burden of GBS is less clear; this is due to a lack of studies using optimal diagnostic, clinical and laboratory techniques and is complicated by the wide availability of non-prescription antibiotics to the general population and in peripartum patients. There is an urgent need for prospective, population-based surveillance to provide an accurate assessment of neonatal GBS disease burden in developing countries, which remains l

Headache in children with Tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The authors analyzed the frequency of occurrence of headaches in children and adolescents with Tourette syndrome (TS) to address their possible inclusion as a comorbidity. STUDY DESIGN: Using a prospective questionnaire, administered directly, we interviewed a total sample size of 109 patients with TS ≤ 21 years of age. The questionnaires were then analyzed according to the International Headache Society's diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: We found headaches to be present in 55% of the patients, with the 2 most common headache types being migraine headaches and tension-type headaches.

Two novel mutations in hMLH1 gene in Iranian hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer patients.

Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is one of the most common forms of hereditary colorectal cancer. It is an autosomal dominant disorder resulting from germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes. In this study, we screened hMLH1 gene in a group of Iranian HNPCC patients using polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformational polymorphism and direct sequencing methods. Here we report two novel frameshift mutations in this gene in our studied population. One of them results from a deletion of "T" at codon 36, exon 1 which causes premature stop codon and a truncated prot
