Food beliefs and practices in urban poor communities in Accra: implications for health interventions.

BACKGROUND: Poor communities in low and middle income countries are reported to experience a higher burden of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and nutrition-related NCDs. Interventions that build on lay perspectives of risk are recommended. The objective of this study was to examine lay understanding of healthy and unhealthy food practices, factors that influence food choices and the implications for developing population health interventions in three urban poor communities in Accra, Ghana. METHODS: Thirty lay adults were recruited and interviewed in two poor urban communities in Accr

Evaluation of a peer-delivered, transitional and post-discharge support program following psychiatric hospitalisation.

BACKGROUND: The time following discharge from psychiatric hospitalisation is a high risk period. Rates of hospital readmission are high and there is increased risk for homelessness and suicide. Transitional and post-discharge support programs have demonstrated positive results in terms of enhanced wellbeing, improved connection with community-based services and, in some cases, reductions in hospital re-admission. This paper reports on the outcomes of a peer-delivered post-discharge support program. METHODS: The program involved peer workers (individuals with their own lived experience of ment

Factors affecting compliance with clinical practice guidelines for pap smear screening among healthcare providers in africa: systematic review and meta-summary of 2045 individuals.

BACKGROUND: Although the importance of the Pap smear in reducing cancer incidence and mortality is known, many countries in Africa have not initiated yet widespread national cervical cancer screening programs. The World Health Organization (WHO) has published Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) on cervical cancer screening in developing countries; however, there is a gap between expectations and clinical performance. Thus, the aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-summary to identify factors affecting compliance with CPGs for Pap screening among healthcare providers in

How do general practitioners experience providing care to refugees with mental health problems? A qualitative study from Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Refugees are a particularly vulnerable group in relation to the development of mental illness and many may have been subjected to torture or other traumatic experiences. General practitioners are gatekeepers for access to several parts of the psychiatric system and knowledge of their patients' refugee background is crucial to secure adequate care. The aim of this study is to investigate how general practitioners experience providing care to refugees with mental health problems. METHODS: The study was conducted as part of an EU project on European Best Practices in Access, Quality

The psychophysics of transition to long term care.

More than a decade after the publication of To Err Is Human, cognitive error remains a mystery to physicians. Competent and conscientious physicians rarely recall making a single cognitive error, yet this must be central to the explanation for inappropriate physician nonadherence to evidence-based guidelines. Published information regarding cognitive error in the medical literature is scarce and widely scattered. We do know that cognitive error is induced by complexity, duress, and uncertainty, conditions that regularly confront long term care physicians when they assume care of a new patient

Effects of trauma and religiosity on self-esteem.

Self-esteem is often lower among persons who have experienced trauma, but religiosity may ameliorate these psychological effects. The purpose of this paper was to examine the relationships among religiosity, self-esteem, and childhood exposure to trauma, utilizing data from the National Comorbidity Survey, a large (N = 8,098) nationally representative population survey in the 48 contiguous states of the USA that assessed religious practices, self-esteem, and exposure to trauma. Exposure to trauma in childhood was assessed through self-report of presence or absence of childhood physical abuse,

Social implications of sexually transmitted cancer.

The long, tedious search for the causes of and cure for the human nemesis, cancer, has not resulted in one astounding breakthrough discovery. Instead, researchers have slowly and painstakingly made small inroads into the understanding of the way cell growth goes awry and becomes malignant, destroying tissues and, if unchecked, spreading to other organs of the body and eventually causing death. One of those inroads is the discovery that a cancer of the uterine cervix is almost certainly caused by a virus transmitted through sexual contact. This article presents the biological, clinical, and psy

Staff perceptions of psychological care on a stroke rehabilitation unit.

This article describes the general principles of a psychological care model and the outcomes of a questionnaire survey with members of a multidisciplinary stroke rehabilitation team. Twenty-eight staff members' responses concerning their understanding and attitudes about the presented model were analysed. The responses revealed that rehabilitation staff had good knowledge about possible psychological reactions of patients following a stroke. They were supportive of the idea that it is important to understand and address patients' psychological needs to improve recovery. The survey revealed dif

Correlates of burnout among Chinese ICU nurses: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Burnout is prevalent among nurses, particularly in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), where work is characterized by high intensity, high risk, and heavy workloads. This condition not only directly impairs nurses' physical and mental health and reduces their occupational retention rate but may also threaten the safety of ICU patients due to potential declines in the quality of nursing care. Given these implications, effective alleviation of burnout among ICU nurses is essential for promoting their well-being, stabilizing the nursing workforce, and improving patient satisfaction. Nutritional status, health literacy, and lifestyle factors associated with health-related quality of life in patients with decompensated cirrhosis: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Liver cirrhosis is one of the leading causes of liver-related mortality worldwide. The disease typically progresses from an initially asymptomatic, compensated phase to decompensation, which adversely affects patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Identifying the factors that influence HRQoL and implementing effective interventions are essential for improving patient outcomes. Based on the health ecology theory, this study focuses on health literacy and nutritional status, with the aim of enhancing patients' quality of survival through targeted interventions. METHODS: A

Decoding functional cough in pediatrics: differentiating tic, psychogenic, and compulsive phenotypes for targeted intervention.

Chronic cough without clear cardiopulmonary pathology poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in children and adolescents. While psychosocial factors play a crucial role in its pathogenesis, historical labels such as "habit cough" or "psychogenic cough" have often been vague and stigmatizing. Despite contemporary consensus guidelines advocating for the term "somatic cough syndrome," unified diagnostic criteria and standardized care pathways remain lacking. A rapid review approach was employed to search the PubMed database for empirical studies published between 2021 and May 2026 on chronic

An evidence-informed occupational health curriculum for pre-deployment preparation of aquanauts in underwater habitats: a scenario-based framework development study.

BACKGROUND: Underwater habitats represent emerging extreme workplaces in which pressure exposure, immersion, confined living, external underwater tasks, and delayed access to definitive care create combined occupational health and safety demands. Candidate selection establishes baseline suitability. It cannot, on its own, specify which preventive and response capabilities should be taught, practiced, and documented between selection and deployment. METHODS: We developed a scenario-based, evidence-informed occupational health curriculum for the pre-deployment preparation of non-medical researc

Heterogeneity among exercise participants: latent profile analysis and differential persistence pathways based on the pressure-support-motivation (PSM) framework.

BACKGROUND: Early dropout remains a major challenge in exercise adherence. Most existing studies adopt variable-centered approaches that overlook individual heterogeneity in psychological resources. This study aimed to identify distinct latent profiles of exercise participants and examine how the relationships between appearance anxiety, social support, and motivational resources with exercise persistence differ across profiles. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 625 Chinese adults aged 18-45 who exercised at least once per week. Integrating Objectified Body Consciousness T

Tyrannical leadership predicts psychotropic use over time: a longitudinal study of healthcare workers in Chile.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare workers are exposed to intense organizational pressures and demanding interpersonal dynamics that may undermine psychological wellbeing. Tyrannical leadership-characterized by hostile, controlling, and humiliating supervisory behaviors-represents a particularly harmful organizational stressor in healthcare settings. Under such conditions, psychotropic medication may be used as a coping response to sustained psychological strain. This study examined whether exposure to tyrannical leadership predicts subsequent psychotropic drug use among healthcare workers. METHODS: A

Breastfeeding in the shadow of war: a qualitative study on the experiences of Palestinian women.

BACKGROUND: Armed conflict and protracted humanitarian crises profoundly affect maternal and infant health, rendering breastfeeding practices particularly vulnerable. While the existing literature largely focuses on breastfeeding rates and nutritional outcomes in conflict settings, limited attention has been given to how women experience, sustain, and make sense of breastfeeding under such conditions of violence, deprivation and displacement. This study aimed to investigate mothers' breastfeeding experiences during the Gaza War (2023-2025) within the framework of the Infant and Young Child Fee
