Women's health and use of crack cocaine in context: structural and 'everyday' violence.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing public health evidence that women who use crack cocaine and are street-involved experience significant health problems and are more isolated with regards to accessing harm reduction and other health-related services. Simultaneously, there is growing acknowledgement that structural and 'everyday' violence are significant factors influencing the health of women who use illegal drugs. Little research has examined how these social processes play out for women who use crack cocaine. METHODS: A critical ethnography informed by the theoretical constructs of structural

Medicolegal affairs. International Academy of Cytology Task Force summary. Diagnostic Cytology Towards the 21st Century: An International Expert Conference and Tutorial.

ISSUES: Increasing litigation over alleged false negative cervical cytologic (CC) smears threatens the viability of this test for cervical cancer detection. The problem appears to be largely American but is beginning to appear in some other countries. In the vast majority of cases there is either a settlement or jury verdict for the plaintiff based largely on the testimony of expert witnesses. Cases are judged on an individual basis without significant consideration of the general performance of the CC smear in laboratories operating in compliance with a wide array of laboratory regulations an

Exploring barriers to seeking health care among Kenyan Somali women with female genital mutilation: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a cultural practice associated with health consequences, women rights and deprivation of dignity. Despite FGM/C-related health consequences, circumcised women may encounter additional challenges while seeking interventions for reproductive health problems. Experiences of women/girls while accessing health services for reproductive health problems including FGM/C-related complications in poor, remote and hard to reach areas is poorly understood. We sought to explore barriers to care seeking among Somali women with complications related to

Implementing Evidence to Inform Recovery After Cardiac Surgery via Median Sternotomy Is Feasible and Effective Using a Research Translation Framework.

BACKGROUND: After cardiac surgery including median sternotomy, patients are often advised to restrict upper limb activity, lifting, and weight bearing to reduce the risk of wound dehiscence and sternal instability. "Keep Your Move in the Tube" (KMIT) is an evidence-based strategy developed for patients after a sternotomy for cardiac surgery that promotes early resumption of functional activities using biomechanical principles. To date, there is inconsistency of KMIT implementation to improve patient recovery and outcomes. The application of a knowledge translation approach may facilitate the t

Exposure and response of private practice psychiatrists in Greece to illicit substance use-related treatment requests: A cross-sectional survey.

The use of illicit substances is a major public health problem. While individuals with substance use problems primarily seek treatment in specialized treatment programs, the role, exposure, and response of private practice psychiatrists to requests for substance use-related problems remain unclear. This study aims to assess private practice psychiatrists' exposure to and response to treatment requests for substance use-related problems, along with examining the requests' characteristics. A cross-sectional online anonymous survey was administered involving private practice psychiatrists in Gree

Exploring why a complex intervention piloted in general practices did not result in an increase in chlamydia screening and diagnosis: a qualitative evaluation using the fidelity of implementation model.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia) is the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted infection (STI) in England; approximately 70% of diagnoses are in sexually active young adults aged under 25. To facilitate opportunistic chlamydia screening in general practice, a complex intervention, based on a previously successful Chlamydia Intervention Randomised Trial (CIRT), was piloted in England. The modified intervention (3Cs and HIV) aimed to encourage general practice staff to routinely offer chlamydia testing to all 15-24 year olds regardless of the type of consultation. However, whe

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of food handlers regarding food safety in urban areas of Southeast Asia: a narrative review.

This narrative review synthesizes recent evidence on knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to food safety among food handlers in urban areas of Southeast Asia, with particular emphasis on migrant workers in Malaysia. The review aims to identify context-specific barriers and enablers that influence effective food safety practices, focusing on structural, linguistic, and institutional determinants in dense urban settings. Literature published between 2020 and 2024 was retrieved from Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The results of the study indicate significant vari

Soil management practices shape the abundance, diversity, and spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Agricultural soils are critical hotspots of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Yet, the environmental factors shaping these reservoirs and the hazards they pose to humans and livestock remain poorly understood. Because management practices introduce antibiotics, heavy metals, and nonantibiotic biocides, they can rapidly select for resistance. Most studies have examined components of management practices in isolation, overlooking the multiple stressors of modern industrial agriculture. Here, we used a large-scale field experiment to examine how multiple stressors from soil and crop manageme

A framework to support dental radiography as part of diagnostic radiography practice.

BACKGROUND: The availability of evidence-informed frameworks to support learning interventions in dental radiography for diagnostic radiographers is limited. The framework used in this study was guided by participatory action research and adapted using the precede-proceed model. The framework is underpinned by social justice and systems and learning theory. AIM: This study aimed to determine and describe the application of a framework for supporting dental radiography as part of diagnostic radiography practice. Food Safety Practices Among Small-Scale Produce Growers Exempt from Federal Regulations: A Systematic Literature Review.

Small-scale produce growers exempt from the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule (PSR) are not required to follow federal food safety standards, yet their practices have direct implications for public health. The extent to which knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) influence voluntary adoption of PSR-aligned practices in this group remains unclear. This systematic literature review aimed to examine self-reported food safety behaviors and willingness to adopt practices among FSMA-exempt small-scale growers. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews
