Exposure to irradiation and radiation stress of the eye lens, thyroid and skin in high resolution computed tomography of the petrous bone are demonstrated by means of measurements conducted by the authors, and compared with results published to date. The radiation stress is less than the doses measured during conventional polytomography of the petrous bone. Four patients with radiation-induced optic neuropathies were treated with hyperbaric oxygen. They had received radiation therapy for treatment of pituitary tumors, reticulum cell sarcoma, and meningioma. Two cases with delayed radiation necrosis of the chiasmatic region following irradiation of the hypophysis for treatment of Cushing's disease were presented. Case 1 was a 36-year-old female who had reduction of visual acuity and bitemporal hemianopsia 2 years after 60Co-irradiation therapy (total 8000 rads) for Cushing's disease. CT scans showed low density in the pituitary fossa and irregular contrast-enhanced suprasellar mass, and metrizamide CT cisternography revealed the pituitary fossa filled with contrast medium. The records of 22 patients at Temple University Hospital with a diagnosis of rectovaginal fistula, from January 1970 to December 1980, were reviewed. The age at the time of diagnosis ranged from 18 to 75 years with an average of 47.3 years. Severe damage to the pelvic viscera is a complication of irradiation therapy that, unfortunately, cannot always be avoided. External beam megavoltage radiation therapy was used as primary treatment for 123 patients with rectal adenocarcinoma. Surgery was undertaken for some patients who had residual tumor. The overall five-year survival rate was 21 per cent. Little is known about late changes in large arteries after radiotherapy. Much more is known about damage to other organs and tissues. The arterial changes resemble chronic, progressive atherosclerosis which may be due to a combination of periarterial fibrosis, direct damage to the arterial wall, occlusion of vasa vasorum and acceleration of naturally occurring atherosclerosis. Levonantradol is a cannabis derivative. Cannabinoid anti-emetics are being assessed in cancer chemotherapy but have been little used in radiotherapy to date. A pilot study and randomised trial compared the anti-emetic effect of a standard drug (Chlorpromazine 26 mg) with Levonantradol at two doses (0.5 and 0.75 mg) in patients receiving palliative single fraction radiotherapy to sites likely to cause nausea and vomiting. Most patients were out-patients. Both drugs were well tolerated. The frequency of vomiting was similar in all three groups in both the pilot study and randomised trial.

We have investigated the mechanism of splenic irradiation-induced granulocytopenia in two patients with myelofibrosis and marked splenomegaly. Serial assays were performed for circulating granulocyte-monocyte progenitors capable of colony formation in vitro (CFU-C). A 56-year-old female was found to have cerebral radionecrosis four and one-half years following betatron therapy of a carcinoma of the scalp. Angiographic findings revealed irregular narrowing of the pericallosal artery in the site of the lesion. Four out of twenty-three acromegalic patients selected for treatment with external megavoltage pituitary irradiation between 1961 and 1975 developed progressive visual failure. They had received megavoltage external irradiation through multiple portals from a cobalt-60 unit over a period of 3 weeks. Visual deterioration began 2 months to 6 years after irradiation.
