“Conservative Enlightenment” as “Heroisation of the Present”

This text is a polemic against the 2023 article by Sergey N. Gradirovsky who wrote about the present-day relevance of Immanuel Kant’s concept of enlightenment and challenged the idea of the modern human being as a child who needs an external guardian or guide to control his behaviour. In my polemic with Gradirovksy I point out that in addition to “self-incurred immaturity” Kant writes about the historical “immaturity” of savage or backward peoples. I also argue that for Kant “maturity” carries not only biological but also socio-historical connotations. I show that in the modern world Kant’s id

The Construct Validity of the ICD-11 Severity of Personality Dysfunction Under Scrutiny of Object-Relations Theory.

The current classification of personality disorder in ICD-11 includes a description of personality functioning, derived from a number of theoretical paradigms, but most notably consistent with the psychodynamic approach. Concurrently, an object-relations model of personality functioning in a dimensional assessment of severity is provided in the Structured Interview of Personality Organization-Revised (STIPO-R). To date, there are no published measures of International Classification of Diseases-11 (ICD-11) personality severity, though the construct is very comparable to the concepts assessed i

The Chiropractic Vertebral Subluxation Part 3: Complexity and Identity From 1908 to 1915.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to review and discuss the history of chiropractic vertebral subluxation (CVS) between 1908 and 1915. DISCUSSION: Evidence from the works of Daniel D. Palmer, Bartlett J. Palmer, Joy Loban, Willard Carver, James Firth, Alva Gregory, John Howard, Arthur Forster, and Harold Swanberg demonstrates that chiropractic during this period was characterized by increasingly complex theories of CVS, which contributed to defining the profession. Critiques of CVS as a central identifier of the profession begin with this early period when students of D. D. Palmer's ear

Development and implementation of a human accuracy program in patient foodservice.

For many years, industry has utilized the concept of human error rates to monitor and minimize human errors in the production process. A consistent quality-controlled product increases consumer satisfaction and repeat purchase of product. Administrative dietitians have applied the concepts of using human error rates (the number of errors divided by the number of opportunities for error) at four hospitals, with a total bed capacity of 788, within a tertiary-care medical center. Human error rate was used to monitor and evaluate trayline employee performance and to evaluate layout and tasks of tr

A qualitative study of the experiences of care and motivation for effective self-management among diabetic and hypertensive patients attending public sector primary health care services in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes and hypertension constitute a significant and growing burden of disease in South Africa. Presently, few patients are achieving adequate levels of control. In an effort to improve outcomes, the Department of Health is proposing a shift to a patient-centred model of chronic care, which empowers patients to play an active role in self-management by enhancing their knowledge, motivation and skills. The aim of this study was to explore patients' current experiences of chronic care, as well as their motivation and capacity for self-management and lifestyle change. METHODS: The

Self-with-Other Schemata, Depression, and Life Satisfaction in Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual People: The Protective Effects of Identity Resilience and Social Support.

Self-with-other schemata, such as attachment style, partner rejection sensitivity, and intolerance of uncertainty in relationships, shape how people relate to intimate partners as well as mental health. The effects of these self-with-other schemata upon depression and life satisfaction, as well as the potential protective effects of identity resilience and social support were examined in a cross-sectional correlational survey study of 257 lesbian, gay, and bisexual people. Participants provided demographic information, and completed measures of attachment style, partner rejection sensitivity,

Self-referential processing and emotion regulation in epilepsy: Associations with affective symptom burden.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation and self-referential processing are core constructs in mental health, yet their interaction remains unexplored in epilepsy. Given the high prevalence of anxiety and depression in this population, this study investigates their interplay in people with epilepsy (PWE) and its association with affective symptomatology. METHODS: 23 PWE and 34 healthy controls (HC) completed the Self-Referential Encoding Task (SRET), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), Affective Style Questionnaire (ASQ), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-

Internalized stigma and depressive severity in Taiwanese gay men: A moderated mediation model of resilience and positive identity.

BACKGROUND: Internalized sexual stigma is a significant psychological stressor contributing to depression among gay men. While resilience and positive sexual identity are known protective factors, their combined roles remain understudied in non-Western contexts, particularly in East Asian societies like Taiwan. PURPOSE: This study investigated whether resilience mediates and positive sexual identity moderates the association between internalized stigma and depressive severity among Taiwanese gay men. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 234 self-identified gay men in T

Self-compassion, emotion regulation, and resilience as predictors of psychological well-being in fibromyalgia patients: a cross-sectional study.

While the roles of self-compassion and cognitive emotion regulation in mental health are increasingly acknowledged, their specific impact on fibromyalgia (FM) remains understudied. Given the substantial psychological burden associated with FM, this study aimed to examine these constructs in relation to emotional distress and resilience. Specifically, we sought to: (1) compare self-compassion and emotion regulation strategies between FM patients and healthy controls; (2) explore their associations with depression, anxiety, pain intensity, and resilience; and (3) identify predictors of psycholog

Differences in Thinness- and Muscularity-Oriented Eating and Body Image Disturbances and Psychosocial Well-Being in Chinese Sexual Minority Men Reporting Top, Bottom, and Versatile Sexual Self-Labels.

In addition to describing sexual partner preferences, sexual self-labels in gay and bisexual (henceforth, sexual minority) men, such as top, bottom, and versatile, are associated with psychological characteristics (e.g., gendered personality traits). No research has explored the association between sexual self-labels and eating and body image disturbances in sexual minority men. Research in sexual minority men from China is particularly valuable and needed due to recent rises in rates of eating and body image disturbances and unique, minority-specific stressors experienced by Chinese sexual mi
