Posterolateral dislocation of the elbow joint. Relationship to medial instability.

BACKGROUND: Dislocation of the elbow joint is the second most common dislocation in the upper extremity, dislocation of the shoulder being the most common. It has been reported that uncomplicated dislocation of the elbow joint may be associated with a decreased range of motion, degenerative changes in the elbow joint, ectopic calcification, or neurological deficits. As the medial collateral ligament complex can be completely disrupted during dislocation, we evaluated the association between the long-term results of treatment of simple posterolateral dislocation of the elbow and the presence of

Outcomes of an anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty with a contralateral reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: It is common for patients to require staged bilateral shoulder arthroplasties. There is a unique cohort of patients who require an anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and a contralateral reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). This study compared the outcomes of patients with a TSA in 1 shoulder and an RSA in the contralateral shoulder. METHODS: Our institutional database was queried to identify all patients with a TSA and a contralateral RSA. Data collection included patient demographics, preoperative and latest follow-up shoulder range of motion, radiographic analysis, and p

Epidemiology, identification, treatment and return to play of musculoskeletal-based ice hockey injuries.

UNLABELLED: Ice hockey is a high contact sport where players are inherently at an increased risk for traumatic and time-loss injury. With its increasing popularity and high incidence of injury, further research is necessary to understand the risks and injuries associated with the sport and to develop performance-based outcome measures to guide return to play. This review, tailored to the practicing sports medicine team physician, focuses on the stepwise identification, treatment, time loss, return to play and subsequent risk of injury for the most common areas of injury: the head, shoulder, hi

Reverse total shoulder replacement: intraoperative and early postoperative complications.

UNLABELLED: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is a treatment option for patients with symptomatic glenohumeral arthritis and a deficient rotator cuff. The reported complication rates vary from 0% to 68%. Given this variation, our purposes were to (1) determine the learning curve for the procedure, (2) identify complications and surgical pitfalls, and (3) compare our results with those of similar published series. We retrospectively reviewed 20 consecutive patients (mean age, 73 years; range, 45-88 years) who had reverse total shoulder arthroplasty by one surgeon, tabulating intraoperative an

Is arthroscopic-assisted treatment applicable for the treatment of pediatric scaphoid nonunion?

Pediatric scaphoid nonunion is uncommon. Immobilization is initially attempted; however, it causes delays in both intervention and healing. Therefore, surgical intervention has gained broader acceptance and has been implemented in recent years. Among these, arthroscopic management has emerged as a contemporary technique. This study evaluated the clinical outcomes of pediatric scaphoid nonunion treated with arthroscopic-assisted bone grafting and Kirschner (K) wire fixation. Six pediatric patients with scaphoid nonunion treated with arthroscopic bone grafting and K-wire fixation between Novembe

Failure mechanisms of the Exactech Equinoxe hybrid cage glenoid in anatomic TSA: a retrieval and radiographic case series.

BACKGROUND: Glenoid loosening is a well-documented failure mechanism in anatomic shoulder arthroplasty. Implant manufacturers have developed innovative designs to address these issues, with hybrid glenoid components emerging as a potential solution. This study investigates the Exactech Equinoxe glenoid (Exactech Inc., Gainesville, FL, USA), a hybrid component that has shown higher midterm revision rates in national registry data. METHODS: We conducted an investigation of failed Equinoxe Cage Glenoid implants revised between November 2022 and July 2025 and analyzed at a tertiary arthroplasty r

The use of serratus anterior artery as the pedicle for complex humerus reconstruction with a vascularized fibular graft: Anatomical study and clinical application in a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Free vascularized fibular graft is an optimal option for the reconstruction of long, complex bone defects in the humerus. Previous surgeries, infection, and trauma, particularly with brachial artery revascularization, may limit the use of conventional recipient vessels. In this study, we review the use of the serratus anterior artery as a recipient vessel, the anatomical validation of its feasibility and its clinical application in a series of cases. METHODS: The anatomical study consisted of 14 dissections on 7 Thiel-embalmed cadavers. The distance from the origin of the serrat

Early Experience With Defensive Antibacterial Coating (DAC®) Hydrogel in High-Risk Orthopaedic Implant Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) after hip and knee arthroplasty and osteosynthesis-associated infections (OAIs) after fracture fixation remain major clinical and economic burdens. High-risk patients with advanced age, multiple comorbidities, and socioeconomic deprivation are particularly vulnerable. Defensive Antibacterial Coating (DAC®) hydrogel (Novagenit S.r.l., Mezzolombardo, Italy) is a fully resorbable hyaluronic acid/poly-D,L-lactide coating that reduces early bacterial adhesion and can act as a carrier for local antibiotic delivery. METHODS: A retrospective cohort s

3D-Printed Metacarpal Prosthesis in the Treatment of Primary Osteosarcoma of the First Metacarpal: A Novel Surgical Technique.

OBJECTIVE: Osteosarcoma at the first metacarpal is extremely rare. Reconstructing the metacarpal after tumor resection is essential, as the thumb accounts for approximately 40%-50% of hand function. Although autografts, arthroplasty, and transposition have been reported as reconstruction options, their use is limited by complications such as secondary injury, nonunion, and displacement. In this study, we present a case of a patient with first metacarpal osteosarcoma who underwent tumor resection followed by reconstruction with a 3D-printed metacarpal prosthesis. We tend to introduce a novel st

Ulnohumeral Cross-Pinning in the Management of Traumatic Elbow Instability.

PURPOSE: Traumatic elbow instability (subluxation and dislocation) represents a challenging clinical entity that can be complicated by persistent intraoperative instability after attempted stabilization or recurrent postoperative instability. Both static and dynamic supplemental stabilization procedures have been described for cases where fracture fixation and ligament repair fail to restore stability. There is a paucity of prior studies involving ulnohumeral cross-pinning (UCP), which is a type of static supplemental stabilization. Our purpose was to assess complications and outcomes after UC
