Pubertal maturation, genetic variation, and ventral striatal development in adolescence: An integrative framework.

Adolescence represents a critical period marked by profound changes in social contexts, biological maturation, neural reorganization, social-cognitive functioning, and the onset of psychopathology. During this sensitive window, developmental outcomes become increasingly heterogeneous. Intertwined processes, including genetic influences, pubertal maturation, and neurodevelopment, likely contribute to this variation. However, research on adolescent development in the past decades has often examined genetic variation, puberty, and neurodevelopment in isolation, with limited integration of how gen

A multilevel conceptual framework for dementia: from life-course mechanisms to public health strategies.

Dementia is a growing global health challenge driven by population aging and unequal exposure to biological, behavioral, social, and environmental determinants across the life course. Existing evidence demonstrates that these factors accumulate and interact from fetal development through old age, shaping cognitive reserve, brain resilience, and vulnerability to neurodegeneration. However, current models rarely integrate these multilevel influences in a structured manner. This study proposes a comprehensive multilevel conceptual framework for dementia that maps determinants across seven levels

The Vocal Repertoire of Gray-Cheeked Mangabeys (Lophocebus albigena) in the Bugoma Forest Reserve, Uganda.

Vocal communication is central for regulating social interactions among primates, particularly in dense forest environments with limited visibility. The acoustic structure of vocalizations is often shaped by a species' socio-ecology. However, numerous species remain poorly documented, including the gray-cheeked mangabey (Lophocebus albigena), an arboreal primate endemic to the forests of Central and East Africa. We combined acoustic measurements with behavioral observations to provide a first quantitative and contextual description of the gray-cheeked mangabey vocal repertoire in the Bugoma Ce…

Health-related quality of life dynamics: modeling insights from immunotherapy.

BackgroundUnderstanding health-related quality of life (HRQoL) dynamics is essential for assessing and improving treatment experiences; however, clinical and observational studies struggle to capture their full complexity. We use simulation modeling and the case of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell therapy-a type of cancer immunotherapy that can prolong survival, but carries life-threatening risks-to study HRQoL dynamics.MethodsWe developed an exploratory system dynamics model with mathematical equations and parameter values informed by literature and expert insights. We refined its feedback st

Lived and Care Experiences of Chronic Musculoskeletal Shoulder Pain in Australian Adults: A Qualitative Study.

OBJECTIVE: Australian evidence on lived and care experiences of chronic musculoskeletal shoulder pain (CMSP), irrespective of disorder classification or disease, is limited. However, such evidence is important for person-centered care and informing local service pathways and care guidelines or standards. To address this gap, we explored the lived experiences of adults with CMSP across domains of the International Classification of Function, Disability and Health (ICF) framework, and their care experiences, preferences, and priorities for CMSP. METHODS: This was a qualitative study that applie

Acculturative Stress, Resilience, and a Syndemic Factor Among Latinx Immigrants.

BACKGROUND: The process of immigration and subsequent adaptation can expose Latinx immigrants to chronic and compounding challenges (i.e., acculturative stress), but little is known about how resilience factors and these stressors interact to influence syndemic conditions, intertwined epidemics that disproportionally affect historically marginalized communities. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to describe the influence of acculturative stress and resilience on the syndemic factor underlying substance abuse, intimate partner violence, HIV risk, and mental conditions. METHODS: Baseli

The Zoom solution: Promoting effective cross-ideological communication online.

The rise of ideological polarization in the U.S. over the past few decades has come with an increase in hostility on both sides of the political aisle. Although communication and compromise are hallmarks of a functioning society, research has shown that people overestimate the negative affect they will experience when viewing oppositional media, and it is likely that negative forecasts lead many to avoid cross-ideological communication (CIC) altogether. Additionally, a growing ideological geographic divide and online extremism fueled by social media audiences make engaging in CIC more difficul

Does incarceration influence patients' goals for opioid use disorder treatment? A qualitative study of buprenorphine treatment in jail.

BACKGROUND: Correctional facilities increasingly offer medications for opioid use disorder (OUD), including buprenorphine. Nevertheless, retention in treatment post-incarceration is suboptimal and overdose mortality remains high. Our objectives were to understand how incarcerated patients viewed buprenorphine treatment and identify modifiable factors that influenced treatment continuation post-release. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 men receiving buprenorphine treatment in an urban jail. Interviews were audio recorded, professionally transcribed, and analyzed using a

Is there an association between prenatal testosterone and autistic traits in adolescents?

Prenatal testosterone (pT) is a crucial component in physiological masculinization in humans. In line with the Prenatal Sex Steroid Theory of autism, some studies have found a positive correlation between pT and autistic traits in childhood. However, effects in adolescence have not been explored. Hormonal and environmental changes occurring during puberty may alter the strength or the nature of prenatal effects on autistic traits. The current study examines if pT relates to autistic traits in a non-clinical sample of adolescents and young adults (N = 97, 170 observations; age 13-21 years old).

Gender and Hemispheric Asymmetries in Acquired Sociopathy.

The emergence of enduring antisocial personality changes in previously normal individuals, or "acquired sociopathy," has consistently been reported in patients with bilateral injuries of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Over the past three decades, cases of acquired sociopathy with (a) bilateral or (b) unilateral sparing of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex have been reported. These cases indicate that at least in a few individuals (a') neural structures beyond the ventromedial prefrontal cortex are also critical for normal social behavior, and (b') the neural underpinnings of social cogni

Prevention-enhancing interactions: a Critical Interpretive Synthesis of the evidence about children who sexually abuse other children.

There is a growing interest in English-speaking jurisdictions, including Australia, North America, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, about the prevention of sexual abuse perpetrated by children against other children. The aim of this review was to identify opportunities for research, policy and practice which could enhance the prevention agenda relating to the perpetration of sexual abuse by children through conducting a Critical Interpretive Synthesis. Eleven electronic databases were searched in the period from 22 April to 23 May 2013 and included: SocINDEX, Social Services Abstrac

Fetal iron deficiency and genotype influence emotionality in infant rhesus monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Anemia during the third trimester of fetal development affects one-third of the pregnancies in the United States and has been associated with postnatal behavioral outcomes. This study examines how fetal iron deficiency (ID) interacts with the fetal monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) genotype. MAOA metabolizes monoamine neurotransmitters. MAOA polymorphisms in humans affect temperament and modify the influence of early adverse environments on later behavior. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to advance translation of developmental ID research in animal models by taking into account genet

Beyond 'vulnerable groups': contexts and dynamics of vulnerability.

This paper reviews approaches to vulnerability in public health, introducing a series of 10 papers addressing vulnerability in health in Africa. We understand vulnerability as simultaneously a condition and a process. Social inequalities are manifest in and exacerbate three key dimensions of vulnerability: the initial level of wellbeing, the degree of exposure to risk, and the capacity to manage risk effectively. We stress the dynamic interactions linking material and social deprivation, poverty, powerlessness and ill health: risks or shocks and their health impacts are intimately interconnect
