Patterns of Family Adversity and Bullying Involvement in Adolescents: Association With Mental Health Problems.

INTRODUCTION: Family and school environments are pivotal in adolescent development. However, the simultaneous examination of adversities in both domains remains understudied. Based on bioecological and spillover theories, this study aimed to bridge this research gap by using latent profile analysis to identify distinct patterns of family adversity and bullying involvement among Chinese adolescents. This study also explored mental health problems associated with these patterns. METHODS: This study was conducted in June (T1) and December (T2) 2023, with a 6-month interval, in Henan Province, Ch

Co-occurrence of depression, anxiety, and perinatal posttraumatic stress in postpartum persons.

BACKGROUND: The study aim was to describe the incidence of depression, anxiety, perinatal-post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and their co-occurrences in the early postpartum period in a low-resource OB/GYN clinic serving majority Medicaid-eligible persons. We hypothesized that postpartum persons screening positive for depression will have an increased risk of a positive screen for anxiety and perinatal PTSD. METHODS: A retrospective study of postpartum persons receiving care in Baton Rouge, Louisiana was conducted using responses abstracted from the electronic medical record (EMR) of the

The Impact of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder on Pharmacologic Intervention Outcomes for Adults With Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) co-occurring in people with bipolar disorder (BD) is high. People with BD and PTSD may experience different outcomes and quality of life after pharmacologic treatment than those with BD alone. This review systematically explores the impact of PTSD on pharmacologic treatment outcomes for adults with BD. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search up to November 25, 2021, using MEDLINE Complete, Embase, American Psychological Association PsycInfo, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials to identify randomized and no

Childhood adversities and risk of posttraumatic stress disorder and major depression following a motor vehicle collision in adulthood.

AIMS: Childhood adversities (CAs) predict heightened risks of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive episode (MDE) among people exposed to adult traumatic events. Identifying which CAs put individuals at greatest risk for these adverse posttraumatic neuropsychiatric sequelae (APNS) is important for targeting prevention interventions. METHODS: Data came from n = 999 patients ages 18-75 presenting to 29 U.S. emergency departments after a motor vehicle collision (MVC) and followed for 3 months, the amount of time traditionally used to define chronic PTSD, in the Advancing Unde

Moral injury in psychiatric patients with personality and other clinical disorders: development, psychometric properties, and validity of the Moral Injury Events Scale-Civilian Version.

Background: Moral injury emerges when someone perpetrates, fails to prevent, or witnesses acts that violate their own moral or ethical code. Nash et al. [(2013). Psychometric evaluation of the moral injury events scale. Military Medicine, 178(6), 646-652] developed a short measure, the Moral Injury Events Scale (MIES) to facilitate the empirical study of moral injury in the military. Our study aimed to develop a civilian version of the measure (MIES-CV) and examine its psychometric properties in a sample of psychiatric inpatients .Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the sample comprised 24

Identity state-dependent self-relevance and emotional intensity ratings of words in dissociative identity disorder: A controlled longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is characterized by, among others, amnesic episodes and the recurrence of different dissociative identity states. While consistently observed in clinical settings, to our knowledge, no controlled research study has shown the degree to which different identity states report autobiographical knowledge over time. Hence, the current study investigates self-relevance and emotional intensity ratings of words longitudinally. METHODS: Data of 46 participants were included: 13 individuals with DID, 11 DID-simulating actors, and a control group of 22 p

Proposed Changes to the Department of Veterans Affairs Disability Rating Rubric for Mental Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides disability benefits for general medical and mental health conditions related to military service. Despite advances in conceptualization, assessment, and diagnosis of mental disorders, the current rating rubric used to determine the award amounts received by veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder and other mental disorders has not been substantively revised since 1996. The VA recently proposed sweeping changes to the rating rubric for mental disorders, shifting the focus from a symptom-based algorithm to one based on function

Various BDNF administrations attenuate SPS-induced anxiety-like behaviors.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has become epidemic following severely stressful incidents. Previous studies have shown that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has anxiolytic effects on various anxiety or depression disorders including PTSD. However, the detailed mechanisms of BDNF for treating PTSD were rarely investigated. In the current study, single-prolonged stress (SPS) was used as an animal model recapitulating specific aspects for a PTSD-like phenotype. The effects of BDNF on SPS-induced anxiety-like behaviors were investigated. We showed that the levels of BDNF in the cere

The effects of MDMA-assisted therapy on alcohol and substance use in a phase 3 trial for treatment of severe PTSD.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is commonly associated with alcohol and substance use disorders (ASUD). A randomized, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial demonstrated the safety and efficacy of MDMA-assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) for the treatment of severe PTSD. This analysis explores patterns of alcohol and substance use in patients receiving MDMA-AT compared to placebo plus therapy (Placebo+Therapy). METHODS: Adult participants with severe PTSD (n = 90) were randomized to three blinded trauma-focused therapy sessions with either MDMA-AT or Placebo+Therapy. Eligible participants

Influence of sleep difficulty on post-traumatic stress symptoms among frontline medical staff during COVID-19 pandemic in China.

Being a nurse was demonstrated to be a risk factor for post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTS) and insomnia among frontline staff during COVID-19 pandemic. The unidirectional relationship between insomnia and PTS highly suggested that insomnia could mediate the increasing risk of PTS among frontline nurses. However, no study had tried to clarify this mediation effect of insomnia during COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate prevalence of insomnia and PTS among frontline doctors and nurses and to clarify the relationship between career (doctor/nurses), insomnia and PTS. A total of 211

The Relationship Between Blast-related Hearing Threshold Shift and Insomnia in U.S. Military Personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss and insomnia emerged as preeminent sources of morbidity among military service members and veterans who served in the recent Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Significant threshold shift (STS), an early indicator of hearing loss, has not been studied in relation to insomnia. This study's objective was to examine the co-occurrence of STS and insomnia among U.S. military personnel with blast-related injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 652 service members who were blast-injured during military operations in Iraq or Afghanistan between 2004 and 2012 were identified

Co-occurrence of severe PTSD, somatic symptoms and dissociation in a large sample of childhood trauma inpatients: a network analysis.

Co-occurrence of mental disorders including severe PTSD, somatic symptoms, and dissociation in the aftermath of trauma is common and sometimes associated with poor treatment outcomes. However, the interrelationships between these conditions at symptom level are not well understood. In the present study, we aimed to explore direct connections between PTSD, somatic symptoms, and dissociation to gain a deeper insight into the pathological processes underlying their comorbidity that can inform future treatment plans. In a sample of 655 adult inpatients with a diagnosis of severe PTSD following chi

PTSD, depression and anxiety in Ebola virus disease survivors in Beni town, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a deadly and feared infectious disease, which can be responsible of debilitating physical and psychological sequelae in survivors including depression and anxiety disorders. Unfortunately, there are scarce data on survivor sequelae in Democratic Republic of the Congo. So this study assessed PTSD, depression and anxiety symptoms among EVD survivors enrolled in the follow-up program of the psychosocial care team of Beni town's general hospital. METHODS: A cross-sectional study used consecutive sampling to recruit 144 Ebola virus disease survivors who cam

Psychological and pharmacological interventions for posttraumatic stress disorder and comorbid mental health problems following complex traumatic events: Systematic review and component network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Complex traumatic events associated with armed conflict, forcible displacement, childhood sexual abuse, and domestic violence are increasingly prevalent. People exposed to complex traumatic events are at risk of not only posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but also other mental health comorbidities. Whereas evidence-based psychological and pharmacological treatments are effective for single-event PTSD, it is not known if people who have experienced complex traumatic events can benefit and tolerate these commonly available treatments. Furthermore, it is not known which components o

The Dissociative Subtype of PTSD Interview (DSP-I): Development and Psychometric Properties.

The inclusion of the dissociative subtype of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD-DS) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) reflects the importance of assessing PTSD-DS. We developed the Dissociative Subtype of PTSD Interview (DSP-I). This clinician-administered instrument assesses the presence and severity of PTSD-DS (i.e., symptoms of depersonalization or derealization) and contains a supplementary checklist that enables assessment and differentiation of other trauma-related dissociative symptoms (i.e., blanking out, emotional numbing, alte

Addressing Loneliness in Complex PTSD.

Loneliness impacts both physical and psychological health and is associated with increases of all-cause mortality and suicidal behavior. Because loneliness may result from a variety of developmental, interpersonal, and intrapersonal factors, distinguishing its components, origins, and sustaining factors as it manifests in various psychopathological states are important steps in formulating interventions to alleviate these conditions. To date, loneliness has not been widely studied in relation to complex posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is newly delineated in the International Classi

Hypersexual Behavior as a Symptom of PTSD: Using Cognitive Processing Therapy in a Veteran with Military Sexual Trauma-Related PTSD.

Hypersexual behavior is a construct that is well recognized yet vaguely conceptualized, leading to some arguments that it may be comprised of multiple etiologies. Childhood sexual abuse is often acknowledged as a common experience among those with sexually addictive behaviors, yet the intersection between PTSD and sexual addiction has not been fully explored. This case illustrates the use of Cognitive Processing Therapy, an empirically supported treatment for PTSD, as a means to treat both PTSD symptoms and hypersexual behaviors in a veteran who had experienced military sexual trauma.
