Influence of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder on Daily-Level Trajectories of Opioid Use Among Trauma-Exposed Individuals in the Community Who Use Opioids.

Objective: Individuals who use opioids are at elevated risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The objective of this study was to examine the influence of PTSD diagnosis on opioid use outcomes over a 60-day period. Methods: Participants were individuals with a history of trauma and recent opioid use who were recruited from the community (Mage = 43.45 years; 54.8% white). Participants were administered a structured diagnostic assessment for PTSD during a baseline session, and reported 30-day opioid use, opioid treatment engagement, impaired control around using opioids, and opioid overdos

Co-occurring experiences of traumatic events and substance use among young people.

OBJECTIVE: Harmful substance use among young people is concerningly prevalent. Substance use disorder (SUD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently co-occur in treatment settings and are well researched among adults but lacking among young community cohorts. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence and relationship between substance use, SUD, trauma, and PTSD among a community sample of young people in Australia. METHOD: A cross-sectional examination of data collected from participants (n = 1007, 48.9 % male) aged 18-22 years (M = 20 years, SD = 0.44), who took part in

Prevalence of mental health problems in people living with HIV: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

HIV remains a significant public health concern, with an estimation of 39 million people infected. There is a lack of universally accepted benchmarks for prevalence of mental health problems among people living with HIV. We aimed to compute aggregate estimates of mental health problems among people living with HIV. We conducted a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. Our inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed cross-sectional or longitudinal studies conducted in any country that investigated people living with HIV and provided data allowing us to determine

A network analysis of Hurricane Maria-related traumatic stress and substance use among Puerto Rican youth.

Youth exposed to natural disasters are at risk of developing trauma-related symptoms as well as engaging in substance use. Although previous research has established associations between disaster-related stressors and substance use in youth, less has focused on how symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may underpin this association. The current study used network analysis to identify specific PTSD symptoms associated with substance use following a natural disaster. Participants were 91,732 youths (Grades 3-12) from across Puerto Rico who completed a needs assessment 5-9 months after

Differential associations of adverse childhood experiences and mental health outcomes in U.S. military veterans.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are robustly associated with adverse mental health outcomes across the lifespan. Military veterans may be particularly vulnerable to adverse mental health effects of ACEs given their potentially higher prevalence of childhood traumas and compounding effects of military service-related traumas. To date, however, scarce research has examined the differential impact of individual ACEs on mental health outcomes in population-based samples of veterans. To address this gap, we analyzed data from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study (NHRVS), which

A weekly diary within-individual investigation of the relationship between exposure to bullying behavior, workplace phobia, and posttraumatic stress symptomatology.

Most studies on workplace bullying have adopted a between-person approach, neglecting the potential within-individual fluctuations in the experience of bullying behaviors. However, investigating such fluctuations may prove useful for uncovering processes and mechanisms associated with bullying and its antecedents and consequences as they unfold over time. In the present study, based on recent discoveries on traumatic experiences and posttraumatic stress (PTS), we hypothesized that even short-term exposure to bullying behaviors-such as the exposure that characterizes an individual when the time

Trauma Shaping the Psychopathological Correlates of Patients with Long-COVID: A 6-Months Longitudinal Study with Repeated Measures Mixed Models.

This research aimed at investigating how the experience of trauma can influence the psychological correlates of long-COVID over time in a clinical sample of patients hospitalized because of COVID-19. Through a longitudinal research design, 70 post-acute patients with COVID-19 were followed-up after hospital discharge in 3-time points up to 6 months and completed the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) and the Symptoms Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90 R). Repeated measures mixed models with random intercept were used to evaluate the effect of trauma (yes/no) over time (T1, T2

Adaptation of a mindfulness-based intervention for trauma-exposed, unhoused women with substance use disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Women experiencing homelessness (WEH) report exceedingly high rates of trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance use disorder (SUD). Mindfulness-based interventions including Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) may help lower traumatic stress-related symptoms and reduce SUD, but have been underexplored in community-based settings serving WEH with symptoms of PTSD and SUD. METHOD: We used a mixed-method, community-engaged approach that implemented a Community Advisory Board and the ADAPT-ITT (assessment, decision, adaptation, production, topical expe

Sexual Abuse and Its Impact on Suicidal Ideation and Attempts and Psychiatric Illness in Children and Adolescents With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Objective: Sexual abuse in minors aged 6-17 years is a significant public health concern. Victims of sexual abuse are at risk of developing complex psychopathology and chronic suicidal thoughts. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops in one-third of minors with a history of sexual abuse. The primary objective of this study was to assess the baseline characteristics of minors with PTSD and a history of sexual abuse (PTSD+S) compared with minors with PTSD without sexual abuse (PTSD only). The secondary objective was to evaluate the psychiatric comorbidities and suicidal ideation/attempts

Climbing as an Add-On Treatment Option for Patients with Severe Anxiety Disorders and PTSD: Feasibility Analysis and First Results of a Randomized Controlled Longitudinal Clinical Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: Exercise has considerable effects on physical and psychological health. Anxiolytic effects of climbing exercise have been found in people suffering from depression. However, there are no studies on patients with severe anxiety disorders or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) practicing climbing as add-on treatment. Additionally, many studies on physical therapy fail to use adequate active control groups. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the feasibility of a four-week climbing exercise program for patients with anxiety disorders or PTSD in comparison to a standard exerci

Melancholic features and typical neurovegetative symptoms of major depressive disorder show specific polygenic patterns.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly prevalent psychiatric condition characterised by a heterogeneous clinical presentation and an estimated twin-based heritability of ~40-50 %. Different clinical MDD subtypes might partly reflect distinctive underlying genetics. This study aims to investigate if polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for different psychiatric disorders, personality traits, and substance use-related traits may be associated with different clinical subtypes of MDD (i.e., MDD with melancholic or psychotic features), higher symptom severity, or different clusters of depr

Examining the associations between PTSD symptom clusters and alcohol-related problems in a sample of low-SES treatment-seeking Black/African American adults.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) often co-occur. This comorbidity negatively influences treatment outcomes, functioning, and quality of life. To better understand the relation between PTSD and AUD, research has begun to examine the influence of PTSD symptom clusters on alcohol-related problems. The current study is the first to analyze the associations between PTSD symptom clusters and alcohol consumption and AUD symptom severity in a treatment-seeking sample of Black/African American (AA) adults with co-occurring AUD and PTSD symptoms. Examination of these a

Prenatal insomnia and childbirth-related PTSD symptoms: A prospective population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Certain populations are at high risk of experiencing a traumatic event and developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet, primary preventive interventions against PTSD are lacking. It is therefore crucial to identify pre-traumatic risk factors, which could be targeted with such interventions. Insomnia may be a good candidate, but studies on civilians are sparse. Furthermore, the mechanisms at stake in the relationship between pre-traumatic insomnia and PTSD symptoms are unclear. METHODS: This prospective population-based cohort study (n = 1,610) examined the relationship b
