Climate Change and Autochthonous Vector-Borne Disease Transmission in Europe: Dengue as a Sentinel Signal for Surveillance and Preparedness.

Climate change is reshaping the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases in Europe by altering the ecological conditions that determine vector survival, seasonal activity and pathogen transmission. Rising temperatures, milder winters, prolonged warm seasons and changing precipitation patterns are increasing the suitability of parts of Europe for competent mosquito, tick and sandfly vectors. These changes, combined with human mobility and land-use change, increase the probability that imported pathogens encounter permissive conditions for local transmission. This Opinion article examines autochtho

Rethinking prognosis in multiple sclerosis: a multiaxial perspective.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition marked by considerable prognostic uncertainty, despite advances in therapeutic strategies and biomarker development. Current approaches to prognosis are largely focused on disease burden, failing to consider the influence of compensatory mechanisms, which complicate the evaluation of long-term outcomes. No unified framework currently exists to guide the integration of diverse prognostic factors, ranging from lesion burden and location to neuroaxonal injury, structural and cognitive reserve, lifestyle and digital biomarkers. To address this gap, a consorti

Organoids in Precision Radiotherapy: Methodological Foundations, Tumor-Specific Evidence, and Translational Roadmaps.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy remains a cornerstone of cancer treatment, while its efficacy is often limited by tumor radioresistance and the risk of normal tissue toxicity. Conventional preclinical models, including two-dimensional (2D) cell cultures and murine xenografts, exhibit significant limitations in recapitulating human tumor pathophysiology, thereby impeding the clinical translation of novel radiotherapeutic strategies. Patient-derived organoids (PDOs) have emerged as transformative three-dimensional (3D) ex vivo models that recapitulate key aspects of original tumor heterogeneity and are

Astrocytic neurotransmitter receptors (astro‑glioreceptors) and their role in neuroplasticity.

Astrocytes express a set of neurotransmitter receptors (glioreceptors) that enable them to regulate synaptic transmission and neuroplasticity, and to function as integral partners in synaptic signaling and the modification of neural circuits. This review presents the current understanding of how glioreceptors on astrocytes (astro‑gliorecptors) mediate bidirectional communication between neurons and glia across major neurotransmitter systems. The review focuses on receptors for glutamate, GABA, acetylcholine, monoamines, neuropeptides, opioids, and purines. Through these receptors, astrocytes c

Colon Organoids as Experimental Models to Study the Effect of Micro-Nanoparticles as a Driver of Early-Onset Colon Cancer.

Early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) in people < 50 years of age has been rising globally, yet its causes remain unknown. Emerging evidence suggests that environmental factors, including exposure to micro-and nanoplastics (MNPs), may contribute to colorectal carcinogenesis. MNPs can enter the gastrointestinal tract through ingestion, translocate across the epithelial barrier via endocytosis or paracellular pathways, and interact directly with epithelial and immune cells. Once internalized, they may generate events associated with tumor initiation including oxidative stress, disruption of memb

Advanced multi-modal mass spectrometry imaging reveals functional differences of placental villous compartments at microscale resolution.

The placenta is a complex and heterogeneous organ that links the mother and fetus, playing a crucial role in nourishing and protecting the fetus throughout pregnancy. Integrative spatial multi-omics approaches can provide a systems-level understanding of molecular changes underlying the mechanisms leading to the histological variations of the placenta during healthy pregnancy and pregnancy complications. Herein, we advance our metabolome-informed proteome imaging (MIPI) workflow to include lipidomic imaging, while also expanding the molecular coverage of metabolomic imaging by incorporating on

Polymerized Pro-Estrogen Microneedles via Two Photon Polymerization.

Two-photon polymerization (TPP) is a powerful technique to create microscale structures with high precision, offering significant potential in tissue engineering and drug delivery. While conventional TPP-fabricated drug carriers rely on passive encapsulation, these systems often suffer from low payload capacity and diffusion-controlled release kinetics. To address these challenges, we present the first demonstration of TPP-printed polyprodrug microstructures, where the therapeutic agent is covalently integrated into the polymer network as the repeating unit itself. Estrogen-based diacrylate mo

State-of-the-Art in Robotic Rehabilitation for Spinal Cord Injury Patients: A Literature Review.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes severe motor, sensory, and functional impairments, often leading to long-term disability. Conventional rehabilitation is labor-intensive and resource-demanding, whereas robotic rehabilitation enables repetitive, task-specific, and intensive training that promotes neuroplasticity. Evidence from clinical and randomized studies shows that upper limb robotic systems, including end-effector and exoskeleton types, improve motor outcomes, especially in the subacute phase. Moreover, hybrid approaches that integrate functional electrical stimulation or spinal cord stimul
