Complication of the use of a radiofrequency device in arthroscopic shoulder surgery: second-degree burn of the shoulder girdle.

Radiofrequency ablation (RF) energy devices are increasingly being used in arthroscopic surgery. This is a case report of a 53-year-old man who had second-degree burns of the shoulder and chest wall as a result of fluid overheating due to RF. During an extensive arthroscopic bursal dissection of the left shoulder, the suction device on the RF wand and the valve was left open, allowing fluid to drip onto the chest and arm of the patient. Three days after his surgery, on his first postoperative visit, the dressings were removed, and the patient was noted to have severe blistering on the lateral

[Magnetic resonance morphologic changes in shoulder joints of world class water polo players].

UNLABELLED: In a prospective study we examined the dominant shoulder of 11 athletes from the 1992 German Olympic water polo team. Their mean age was 25.4 +/- 3.5 years. Water polo had been practised generally for 14.1 +/- 4.3 years and professionally for 11.6 +/- 3.9 years. The weekly training amounted to between 12.5 and 19.5 hours. All athletes were submitted to standardised clinical, sonographical and MRI tests. In 5 cases we found anamnestic and/or clinical indications of rotator cuff pathology. In all 5 cases the supraspinatus tendon was affected, and in three cases both the supra- and th

Current concepts in the diagnosis and treatment of hand and wrist injuries in sports.

The hand is the most commonly injured part in sport. Fortunately, most injuries are minor and do not interfere with the sport participation, but even these leave residual functional deficits that may increase with time. More severe injuries of the hand are appreciated instantly by the player and health care personnel and generally receive better care. The goal is to maintain the best functioning hands now for the sport and in the future for the life's work of the hand. A program is herein described outlining the care of minor and major sports injuries to the hand that tries to return the injur

The relationship between lateral ankle sprain and ankle tendinitis in ballet dancers.

The lateral ligament complex of the ankle is the most frequently injured structure in the body. Although most simple ankle sprains do not result in long-term disability, a significant number do not completely resolve, leading to residual symptoms that may persist for years. The most commonly reported symptoms, particularly among athletes, include instability, re-injury, and tendinitis. Ballet dancers are a combination of artist and high-performance athlete; consequently, they are subjected to the same types of injuries as other athletes, including lateral ankle sprains and their sequelae. EXPERIMENTAL SYPHILIS IN THE RABBIT : VI. AFFECTIONS OF BONE, CARTILAGE, TENDONS, AND SYNOVIAL MEMBRANES. PART 1. LESIONS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM.

From a study of a series of rabbits inoculated with two old strains of Treponema pallidum, it was found that localized infection of bones and tendons was of frequent occurrence and led to the formation of a variety of lesions. The bones usually involved were those of the face and the feet and legs. Most often the lesions arose from the periosteum but developed also within the bone or marrow cavities and at lines of epiphyseal union. Grossly, the periosteal lesions were of two types-one being a circumscribed, indurated, and nodular mass and the other a process of a more diffuse character. Histo

Comparison of Knee Pain and Difficulty With Kneeling Between Patellar Tendon and Hamstring Tendon Autografts After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Study From the New Zealand ACL Registry.

BACKGROUND: The bone-patellar tendon-bone (BTB) autograft is associated with difficulty with kneeling after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction; however, it is unclear whether it results in a more painful or symptomatic knee compared with the hamstring tendon autograft. PURPOSE: To identify the rate and risk factors for knee pain and difficulty with kneeling after ACL reconstruction. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Primary ACL reconstruction procedures prospectively recorded in the New Zealand ACL Registry from April 2014 to May 2021 were analyzed. The

The effects of cholesterol accumulation on Achilles tendon biomechanics: A cross-sectional study.

Familial hypercholesterolemia, a common genetic metabolic disorder characterized by high cholesterol levels, is involved in the development of atherosclerosis and other preventable diseases. Familial hypercholesterolemia can also cause tendinous abnormalities, such as thickening and xanthoma (tendon lipid accumulation) in the Achilles, which may impede tendon biomechanics. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of cholesterol accumulation on the biomechanical performance of Achilles tendons, in vivo. 16 participants (10 men, 6 women; 37±6 years) with familial hypercholestero

[Arthro-C-scan analysis of rotator cuff tears healing after arthroscopic repair: analysis of predictive factors in a consecutive series of 167 arthroscopic repairs].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Arthroscopic repair of rotator cuff tears is a well described technique with good clinical results. The purpose of this work was to use the arthro-CT-scan to evaluate tendon healing after arthroscopic repair and search for epidemiological, anatomic and technical factors predictive of tendon healing. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This prospective consecutive series included 167 non-randomized shoulders. All patients underwent a preoperative assessment using the crude Constant score and a standard x-ray protocol to evaluate cuff status. Cuff repairs were all performed arthroscopica

Editorial Commentary: Suture Configuration Matters When Fixing Proximal Hamstring Tears.

As endoscopic techniques for the management of proximal hamstring injuries have evolved, new challenges have emerged. Tendon-to-bone healing remains the ultimate goal, but a strong time-zero fixation construct is necessary to resist tension and facilitate healing. The constraints of an endoscopic environment limit the surgeon's ability to pass suture and create constructs that are relatively straightforward in an open procedure. Biomechanical studies have shown that suture configurations that distribute tension and maximize suture purchase achieve higher ultimate load to failure. Locking const

Radial entry for ESIN fixation of pediatric radial fractures: a 10-year cohort study with focus on neurological complications.

BACKGROUND: Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) is an established treatment for pediatric radius fractures. However, the optimal surgical entry point remains debated due to differing complication profiles. The radial approach carries a risk of superficial branch of the radial nerve (SBRN) irritation, whereas dorsal approaches have been associated with extensor tendon injuries. This study evaluates the neurological complication profile of the radial approach and provides clinically relevant risk factors. METHODS: A retrospective single-center study was performed including 285 pediatri…

Ultrasound-assisted minimally invasive repair of acute Achilles tendon rupture with a shuttling needle.

BACKGROUND: The optimal management of acute Achilles tendon ruptures remains controversial. Open surgical repair (OSR) carries high complication rates, while minimally invasive techniques reduce risks but pose concerns regarding sural nerve injury. This study evaluates the clinical outcomes of ultrasound-assisted minimally invasive repair (MIR) using a double-ended shuttling needle. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 41 patients (2017-2022) was analyzed: 19 underwent OSR (8-10 cm midline incision, Krackow suture), and 22 received MIR (2 cm incision, ultrasound-guided Bunnell suture with shutt

Comparison of Iatrogenic Soft Tissue Trauma in Robotic-Assisted versus Manual Partial Knee Arthroplasty.

Partial knee arthroplasty (PKA) is performed to treat end-stage osteoarthritis in a single compartment. There are minimal data characterizing soft-tissue injuries for PKA with robotic and manual techniques. This cadaver study compared the extent of soft-tissue trauma sustained through robotic-arm assisted PKA (RPKA) and manual PKA (MPKA). Five surgeons prepared 24 cadaveric knees for medial PKA, including six MPKA controls and 18 RPKA assigned into three different workflows: RPKA-LB (six knees) - RPKA with legacy burr; RPKA-NB (six knees) - RPKA with new burr design; and RPKA-NBS (six knees) -

The effects of transection and reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament complex on the position of the proximal phalanx of the thumb during simulated tip pinch.

Injuries to the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb are common and may result in functional instability of the joint. Eight cadaveric hands were studied. Physiologic levels of muscle loads were applied to the extrinsic flexor tendon of the thumb to simulate tip pinch of the thumb. We investigated the effects of transection of the UCL and accessory UCL (UCL complex) with and without transection of the dorsal capsule and volar plate and of reconstruction of the UCL, for 2 surgical techniques, on the position of the proximal phalanx with respect to the th

Percutaneous trigger finger release: the 'lift-cut' technique.

One hundred and eighty patients with 240 trigger digits were treated by percutaneous release using a 'lift-cut' technique. All patients were reviewed at 3 months following release. Overall, 94% achieved an excellent or good result. Ten patients experienced recurrent symptoms and required a subsequent open release. There was no clinical evidence of digital nerve or flexor tendon injury. We recommend this technique as a safe and effective outpatient procedure.
