Hypomania and depression associated with distinct neural activity for immediate and future rewards.

Bipolar spectrum and unipolar depressive disorders have been associated with distinct and opposite profiles of reward-related neural activity. These opposite profiles may reflect a differential preexisting vulnerability for both types of disorders. In support, recent ERP studies find that, following reward feedback, a larger reward positivity (RewP) is associated with greater vulnerability for bipolar spectrum disorders, whereas a smaller RewP is associated with greater vulnerability for depression. However, prior studies have investigated only immediate rewards and have not examined dimension

Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) auditory brainstem responses to frequency-modulated "chirp" stimuli.

Previous studies have demonstrated that increasing-frequency chirp stimuli (up-chirps) can enhance human auditory brainstem response (ABR) amplitudes by compensating for temporal dispersion occurring along the cochlear partition. In this study, ABRs were measured in two bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in response to spectrally white clicks, up-chirps, and decreasing-frequency chirps (down-chirps). Chirp durations varied from 125 to 2000 μs. For all stimuli, frequency bandwidth was constant (10-180 kHz) and peak-equivalent sound pressure levels (peSPLs) were 115, 125, and 135 dB re 1 μ

Acute physiological and perceptual responses to high-load resistance exercise in hypoxia.

This study assessed whether hypoxia during high-load resistance exercise could enhance the acute physiological responses related to muscular development. Twelve trained men performed exercise in three conditions: normoxia (fraction of inspired oxygen [FI O2 ] = 21%), moderate-level hypoxia (FI O2  = 16%) and high-level hypoxia (FI O2  = 13%). Exercise comprised high-load squats and deadlifts (5 × 5 using 80% of 1-repetition maximum with 180-s rest). Muscle oxygenation and activation were monitored during exercise. Metabolic stress was estimated via capillary blood sampling. Perceived fatigue a

MEG-measured visually induced gamma-band oscillations in chronic schizophrenia: Evidence for impaired generation of rhythmic activity in ventral stream regions.

BACKGROUND: Gamma-band oscillations are prominently impaired in schizophrenia, but the nature of the deficit and relationship to perceptual processes is unclear. METHODS: 16 patients with chronic schizophrenia (ScZ) and 16 age-matched healthy controls completed a visual paradigm while magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data was recorded. Participants had to detect randomly occurring stimulus acceleration while viewing a concentric moving grating. MEG data were analyzed for spectral power (1-100Hz) at sensor- and source-level to examine the brain regions involved in aberrant rhythmic activity, and

Visual Stimulus Detection Correlates with the Consistency of Temporal Sequences within Stereotyped Events of V1 Neuronal Population Activity.

UNLABELLED: Sensory information about the world is translated into rate codes, such that modulations in mean spiking activity of neurons relate to differences in stimulus features. More recently, it has been proposed that also temporal properties of activity, such as assembly formation and sequential population activation, are important for understanding the relation between neuronal activity and behavioral output. These phenomena appear to be robust properties of neural circuits, but their relevance for perceptual judgments, such as the behavioral detection of stimuli, remains to be tested. S

Contraceptive Use Affects Overall Olfactory Performance: Investigation of Estradiol Dosage and Duration of Intake.

The influence of female sex steroids on cognitive performance and sensory perception has been investigated for decades. However, previous research that studied olfaction revealed inconsistent results. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different ethinyl estradiol (EE) concentrations of oral contraceptives and duration of intake on olfactory function. Forty-two healthy women, with regular intake of either high or low EE dosage over at least one year and up to 15 years participated in this study. Results revealed a significant concordance between a priori categorization

Ageing and feature binding in visual working memory: The role of presentation time.

A large body of research has clearly demonstrated that healthy ageing is accompanied by an associative memory deficit. Older adults exhibit disproportionately poor performance on memory tasks requiring the retention of associations between items (e.g., pairs of unrelated words). In contrast to this robust deficit, older adults' ability to form and temporarily hold bound representations of an object's surface features, such as colour and shape, appears to be relatively well preserved. However, the findings of one set of experiments suggest that older adults may struggle to form temporary bound

Working memory and facial expression recognition in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Facial expression recognition impairment has been reported in Parkinson's disease. While some authors have referred to specific emotional disabilities, others view them as secondary to executive deficits frequently described in the disease, such as working memory. The present study aims to analyze the relationship between working memory and facial expression recognition abilities in Parkinson's disease. We observed 50 patients with Parkinson's disease and 49 healthy controls by means of an n-back procedure with four types of stimuli: emotional facial expressions, gender, spatial locations, and

Dose-response relationships for the onset of avoidance of sonar by free-ranging killer whales.

Eight experimentally controlled exposures to 1-2 kHz or 6-7 kHz sonar signals were conducted with four killer whale groups. The source level and proximity of the source were increased during each exposure in order to reveal response thresholds. Detailed inspection of movements during each exposure session revealed sustained changes in speed and travel direction judged to be avoidance responses during six of eight sessions. Following methods developed for Phase-I clinical trials in human medicine, response thresholds ranging from 94 to 164 dB re 1 μPa received sound pressure level (SPL) were fi

Influence of local exposure to static magnetic field on pain perception and bone turnover of osteoporotic patients with vertebral deformity - a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Static magnetic field (SMF) could improve pain sensation and bone turnover. In a single-center randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study we investigated the effects of SMF exposure on subjective pain and bone turnover. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Postmenopausal osteoporotic women (aged 50-70 years) with bone deformity and back pain were randomized to 10 weekly visits of 30-min SMF (n = 6) or treatment with non-magnetized pads (n = 5) on the back. Primary and secondary outcomes were changes in pain sensation on a visual analogue scale (VAS) during each visit and over 10 weeks, respe

Bilateral theta-burst TMS to influence global gestalt perception.

While early and higher visual areas along the ventral visual pathway in the inferotemporal cortex are critical for the recognition of individual objects, the neural representation of human perception of complex global visual scenes remains under debate. Stroke patients with a selective deficit in the perception of a complex global Gestalt with intact recognition of individual objects - a deficit termed simultanagnosia - greatly helped to study this question. Interestingly, simultanagnosia typically results from bilateral lesions of the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ). The present study aimed t

Recovery of speech following total glossectomy: an acoustic and perceptual appraisal.

This study involved an acoustic and perceptual analysis of the speech produced by a 31-year-old female following total glossectomy. Speech samples were collected on three occasions within the first 3 months following glossectomy. Vowel articulation was examined acoustically as a function of vowel space and the Euclidean distance separating corner vowels. Perceptual analyses involved presentation of the participant's CV productions to 30 healthy adult listeners who made forced-choice identifications of consonant type. Acoustic analysis revealed improvements in vowel space area and an increase i

Reading times and adaptive styles among patients diagnosed with psychosis as assessed by the Serial Color-Word Test.

The present study focuses on how patients diagnosed with psychosis deal with a conflicting situation. In the study, two groups of patients were assessed. One group consisted of patients diagnosed with psychosis (n = 41), while the comparison group (n = 135) consisted of inpatients diagnosed either with anorexia nervosa or with bulimia nervosa. The groups were assessed using the Serial Color Word Test (S-CWT), designed for studying an individual's successive adaptation over time to a conflicting situation. The S-CWT differentiated the two groups regarding both reading time and adaptive styles.

Rethinking reinforcement: allocation, induction, and contingency.

The concept of reinforcement is at least incomplete and almost certainly incorrect. An alternative way of organizing our understanding of behavior may be built around three concepts: allocation, induction, and correlation. Allocation is the measure of behavior and captures the centrality of choice: All behavior entails choice and consists of choice. Allocation changes as a result of induction and correlation. The term induction covers phenomena such as adjunctive, interim, and terminal behavior-behavior induced in a situation by occurrence of food or another Phylogenetically Important Event (P

Egocentric mental transformation of self: effects of spatial relationship in mirror-image and anatomic imitations.

Assessing the mental state of others by considering their perspective plays an important part in social communication. Imitation based on visual information represents a typical case of the translation of sensory input into action. Although humans are often successful in imitating complex actions, the mechanisms that underlie successful imitation are poorly understood. In earlier findings, it has been suggested that understanding others' minds through imitation is realized in the course of the comparison between the representations of the self and others, involving a transformation of the egoc

Beyond phonological processing deficits in adult dyslexics: atypical FMRI activation patterns for spatial problem solving.

It is unclear the extent to which neurodevelopmental differences observed in reading disabled individuals are limited to traditional language processing areas. Some have suggested atypical processing of complex spatial problems in these individuals. Hitherto, research on this question has been limited to behavioral studies, yielding mixed results. Absence of related imaging studies is in stark contrast to the plethora examining functional neurology for verbal tasks. This study uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine how adult dyslexics perform when analyzing complex spatia

Evaluating the effects of olivocochlear feedback on psychophysical measures of frequency selectivity.

Frequency selectivity was evaluated under two conditions designed to assess the influence of a "precursor" stimulus on auditory filter bandwidths. The standard condition consisted of a short masker, immediately followed by a short signal. The precursor condition was identical except a 100-ms sinusoid at the signal frequency (i.e., the precursor) was presented before the masker. The standard and precursor conditions were compared for measurements of psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs), and notched noise tuning characteristics. Estimates of frequency selectivity were significantly broader in the

The effects of cigarette smoking on the female voice.

To investigate voice changes as they develop over time due to cigarette smoking, women who never smoked (NS), women who smoked less than 10 years (S1), and women who smoked 10 or more years (S2) were compared. Acoustic (fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, signal-to-noise ratio), electroglottographic (open, closing, and speed quotients), aerodynamic (subglottal pressure, airflow, laryngeal airway resistance), and perceptual measures were obtained. Fundamental frequency and open quotient significantly decreased and speed quotient significantly increased in S1 and S2; jitter and shimmer signi

Top-down control of visual cortex in migraine populations.

The pathophysiology of migraine includes a heightened excitability of visual cortex that persists between headache events and that has been linked to impaired inhibitory intracortical processes. Here we examined the hypothesis that this cortical pathophysiology would affect the top-down attentional control of visual cortex. We asked two groups of participants-migraineurs (N=29) and non-migraine controls (N=29)-to perform a probabilistic spatial orienting task as we measured visual sensory cortical responses via event-related potentials (ERPs). Data were then analyzed as a function of whether t

Forward-masking patterns produced by symmetric and asymmetric pulse shapes in electric hearing.

Two forward-masking experiments were conducted with six cochlear implant listeners to test whether asymmetric pulse shapes would improve the place-specificity of stimulation compared to symmetric ones. The maskers were either cathodic-first symmetric biphasic, pseudomonophasic (i.e., with a second anodic phase longer and lower in amplitude than the first phase), or "delayed pseudomonophasic" (identical to pseudomonophasic but with an inter-phase gap) stimuli. In experiment 1, forward-masking patterns for monopolar maskers were obtained by keeping each masker fixed on a middle electrode of the
