Functional degradation of extrastriate visual cortex in senescent rhesus monkeys.

The receptive field properties of striate cortical (V1) cells degrade in senescent macaque monkeys. We have now carried out extracellular single unit studies of the receptive field properties of cells in extrastriate visual cortex (area V2) in very old rhesus (Macaca mulatta) monkeys. This study provides evidence that both the orientation and direction selectivities of V2 cells in old monkeys degrade significantly. Decreased selectivity is accompanied by increased visually driven and spontaneous responses. As a result, V2 cells in old animals exhibit markedly decreased signal-to-noise ratios.

Relationship between asymmetric central corneal thickness and glaucomatous visual field loss within the same patient.

PURPOSE: Considering that thinner central corneal thickness (CCT) has been identified as a significant glaucoma risk factor, this study was designed to determine whether patients with glaucoma with asymmetric CCT demonstrate greater visual field loss in their thinner CCT eye compared with their thicker CCT eye. METHODS: Patient logs were used to retrospectively identify patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) with CCT asymmetry of 10 microm or greater. Severity of glaucoma was determined using Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study (AGIS)

The relationship between retinal ganglion cell function and retinal nerve fiber thickness in early glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To compare relative reduction of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) function and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in early glaucoma by means of steady-state pattern electroretinogram (PERG) and optical coherence tomography (OCT), respectively. METHODS: Eighty-four persons with suspected glaucoma due to disc abnormalities (GS: mean age 56.6 +/- 13.8 years, standard automated perimetry [SAP] mean deviation [MD] -0.58 +/- 1.34 dB) and 34 patients with early manifest glaucoma (EMG, mean age 65.9 +/- 10.7 years, SAP MD -2.7 +/- 4.5 dB) were tested with PERG and OCT. Both GS and EMG pat

The practice of optometry: National Board of Examiners in Optometry survey of optometric patients.

PURPOSE: A study commissioned by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry was designed to obtain information about patients seen in general practice. METHODS: Providers completed an encounter form for patients seen during a 2-day sample. Data were obtained from 11,012 patients in rural, urban, and suburban environments from a diverse population of 480 optometrists representative of profession-wide practitioners in terms of geographic distribution and practice settings. Although practitioners were selected randomly, the response rate among those who were invited to participate was only 17.

Premorbid childhood ocular alignment abnormalities and adult schizophrenia-spectrum disorder.

This study examined the relation between childhood ocular alignment deficits and adult psychiatric outcomes among children at high-risk for schizophrenia and controls. A sample of 265 Danish children was administered a standardized eye exam assessing strabismus and related ocular alignment deficits. All children whose mothers or fathers had a psychiatric diagnosis of schizophrenia comprised the first group (N=90). Children who had at least one parent with a diagnosis other than schizophrenia comprised the first matched control group (N=93). The second control group consisted of children with n

The topography of metabolic deficits in posterior cortical atrophy (the visual variant of Alzheimer's disease) with FDG-PET.

BACKGROUND: The term "posterior cortical atrophy" (PCA) refers to a clinical syndrome in which higher order visual processing is disrupted owing to a neurodegenerative disorder, the most commonly associated pathology being Alzheimer's disease. OBJECTIVE: To map the topography of hypometabolic brain regions in a group of subjects with PCA who had undergone detailed neuropsychological characterisation. METHODS: Resting cerebral metabolism was measured with ((18)F)fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in patients with PCA (n = 6), typical Alzheimer's disease (n = 10), and he

Homonymous visual field defects and stroke in an older population.

PURPOSE: The objective of the present study was to describe the prevalence of homonymous visual field defects in a defined older urban population and associations with self-reported stroke. METHODS: Homonymous visual field defects were assessed from screening automated visual field tests of both eyes in 3654 persons aged > or =49 years who were participating in the Blue Mountains Eye Study. This represented 82.4% of eligible residents from a defined area west of Sydney, Australia. A detailed eye examination was performed, and the medical history was taken. Masked grading of visual fields was

[Functional topography of the on and off channels of retinal cone system in diagnosis of initial glaucoma].

A new method-achromatic static campymetry-was used for the early diagnosis of visual function disorders in glaucoma. It was realized through IBM personal computer in the DOS system with SVGA monitor. The method permits examination of the functional topography of the on and off channels of the retinal cone system, in other words, it detects the early disorders of contrast sensitivity in each site of the visual field. Achromatic static campymetry revealed changes in 100% of patients with the initial primary open-angle glaucoma in whom the traditional static perimetry using Perimat 206 showed no

Quantification of tracking eye movements in patients with neurological disorders.

Tracking eye movements were studied in 20 healthy subjects and in 24 patients with vestibular neuronitis, disorders within the frontal cortex, the cerebellum or the brain stem. The tracking tests were performed at six different target velocities between 10-60 degrees s-1 and different parameters were evaluated. The maximum velocity gain of smooth pursuit as normal in the group with vestibular neuronitis but reduced in the groups with disorders within the frontal cortex, cerebellum and the brain stem. The total amplitude of tracking and amplitude of smooth pursuit were normal in the groups with

The vestibular system: Unsteadiness, dizziness, and vertigo.

This chapter provides a detailed overview of the vestibular system's anatomy, physiology, and clinical relevance, emphasizing how inner-ear sensory structures and brainstem pathways interact to maintain balance, gaze stability, and spatial orientation. It begins with the peripheral vestibular apparatus, describing the semicircular canals and otolith organs in detecting angular and linear accelerations. These signals are transmitted via the vestibulocochlear nerve to the vestibular nuclei at the pontomedullary junction, where they integrate with visual and somatosensory inputs to drive coordina
