Vertebral artery dominance, brainstem auditory evoked potential, and vertigo of vascular origin.

OBJECTIVE: Vertebral artery dominance (VAD) is defined when there is a significant difference between the diameters of the vertebral arteries (VAs). VAD may be a risk factor for vertigo of vascular origin. The objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate changes of brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) in patients with vertigo caused by VAD through magnetic resonance; and (2) to understand the possible mechanism(s) by which VAD triggers vertigo of vascular origin. METHODS: This prospective study involved 64 patients with vertigo, including 35 patients with VAD (VAD group) and 29 wit

Chronic administration of the neurotrophic agent cerebrolysin ameliorates the behavioral and morphological changes induced by neonatal ventral hippocampus lesion in a rat model of schizophrenia.

Neonatal ventral hippocampal lesion (nVHL) in rats has been widely used as a neurodevelopmental model to mimic schizophrenia-like behaviors. Recently, we reported that nVHLs result in dendritic retraction and spine loss in prefrontal cortex (PFC) pyramidal neurons and medium spiny neurons of the nucleus accumbens (NAcc). Cerebrolysin (Cbl), a neurotrophic peptide mixture, has been reported to ameliorate the synaptic and dendritic pathology in models of aging and neurodevelopmental disorder such as Rett syndrome. This study sought to determine whether Cbl was capable of reducing behavioral and

Brain basis of phonological awareness for spoken language in children and its disruption in dyslexia.

Phonological awareness, knowledge that speech is composed of syllables and phonemes, is critical for learning to read. Phonological awareness precedes and predicts successful transition from language to literacy, and weakness in phonological awareness is a leading cause of dyslexia, but the brain basis of phonological awareness for spoken language in children is unknown. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify the neural correlates of phonological awareness using an auditory word-rhyming task in children who were typical readers or who had dyslexia (ages 7-13) and a younger g

Separate and combined effects of Sod1 and Cdh23 mutations on age-related hearing loss and cochlear pathology in C57BL/6J mice.

Both the ahl allele of Cdh23 and the null mutation of Sod1 have been shown to contribute to age-related hearing loss (AHL) in mice, but mixed strain backgrounds have confounded analyses of their individual and combined effects. To test for the effects of Sod1 deficiency independently from those of Cdh23(ahl), we produced mice with four digenic genotypes: Sod1(+/+)Cdh23(ahl)(/ahl), Sod1(+/+)Cdh23(+/+), Sod1(-/-)Cdh23(ahl)(/ahl), and Sod1(-/-)Cdh23(+/+), all on a uniform C57BL(/)6J strain background. We assessed hearing loss by ABR threshold measurements and evaluated cochlear pathologies in age

Ototoxicity risk assessment combining distortion product otoacoustic emissions with a cisplatin dose model.

An objective method for identifying ototoxic hearing loss among patients receiving cisplatin is necessary since the ability of patients to take a behavioral test may change over the course of treatment. Data from 56 monitoring visits by 19 Veterans taking cisplatin were used to identify combinations of distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) metrics and ototoxicity risk factors that best identified ototoxic hearing loss. Models were tested that incorporated DPOAE metrics generated statistically using partial least-squares analysis. Models were also tested that incorporated a priori DPO

Do motivational incentives reduce the inhibition deficit in ADHD?

The primary goal of this study was to test three competing theories of ADHD: the inhibition theory, the motivational theory, and a dual deficit theory. Previous studies have produced conflicting findings about the effects of incentives on executive processes in ADHD. In the present study of 25 children with ADHD and 30 typically developing controls, motivation was manipulated within the Stop Task. Stop signal reaction time was examined, as well as reaction time, its variability, and the number of errors in the primary choice reaction time task. Overall, the pattern of results supported the inh

Neural bases of categorization of simple speech and nonspeech sounds.

Categorization is fundamental to our perception and understanding of the environment. However, little is known about the neural bases underlying the categorization of sounds. Using human functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we compared the brain responses to a category discrimination task with an auditory discrimination task using identical sets of sounds. Our stimuli differed along two dimensions: a speech-nonspeech dimension and a fast-slow temporal dynamics dimension. All stimuli activated regions in the primary and nonprimary auditory cortices in the temporal cortex and in the pari

Sound localization during homotopic and heterotopic bilateral cooling deactivation of primary and nonprimary auditory cortical areas in the cat.

Although the contributions of primary auditory cortex (AI) to sound localization have been extensively studied in a large number of mammals, little is known of the contributions of nonprimary auditory cortex to sound localization. Therefore the purpose of this study was to examine the contributions of both primary and all the recognized regions of acoustically responsive nonprimary auditory cortex to sound localization during both bilateral and unilateral reversible deactivation. The cats learned to make an orienting response (head movement and approach) to a 100-ms broad-band noise stimulus e

Cellular correlates of progressive hearing loss in 129S6/SvEv mice.

Several strains of mice hear well initially but show progressive sensorineural hearing loss. Affected cochlear cell types include all those known to be affected in human age-related hearing loss (ARHL), or presbycusis. Thus these mice have been offered as models of human ARHL. At present, however, few mouse ARHL models are sufficiently well described to serve as the basis for specific hypotheses about human ARHL. We examined 1-month-old and 15-month-old 129S6/SvEv (129S6) mice and compared them with BALB/cJ and CBA/J mice. Age-related elevation of compound action potential thresholds was inter

Auditory filter nonlinearity in mild/moderate hearing impairment.

Sensorineural hearing loss has frequently been shown to result in a loss of frequency selectivity. Less is known about its effects on the level dependence of selectivity that is so prominent a feature of normal hearing. The aim of the present study is to characterize such changes in nonlinearity as manifested in the auditory filter shapes of listeners with mild/moderate hearing impairment. Notched-noise masked thresholds at 2 kHz were measured over a range of stimulus levels in hearing-impaired listeners with losses of 20-50 dB. Growth-of-masking functions for different notch widths are more p

Sound-evoked myogenic potentials and responses with 3-ms latency in auditory brainstem response.

OBJECTIVES: The vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) has shed new light on vestibular testing. A large negative deflection with a 3-ms latency within the auditory brainstem response (ABR) has been reported in some patients with deafness. This negative deflection has been termed the N3 potential and it is assumed to be a vestibular-evoked potential. This study investigated the relationship between the VEMP and the N3 potential. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective evaluation of the VEMP and the N3 potential in 21 patients. METHODS: The oto-neurological tests, including caloric test, hearing sensi

In vitro and animal studies of sodium thiosulfate as a potential chemoprotectant against carboplatin-induced ototoxicity.

When carboplatin (cis-diammine-1,1-cyclobutane-dicarboxylato-platinum) delivery to brain tumors is optimized with osmotic blood-brain barrier disruption (BBBD), high frequency hearing loss can result. Treatment with sodium thiosulfate (STS) blocked carboplatin cytotoxicity against the LX-1 human small cell lung carcinoma cell line in vitro. STS decreased carboplatin-induced ototoxicity in a guinea pig model, as determined by electrophysiological measurements and analysis of inner ear outer hair cell numbers. Protection was found when STS was administered up to 8 h subsequent to carboplatin but

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in the sternomastoid muscle are not of lateral canal origin.

We studied vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in 6 patients after unilateral vestibular neurectomy and in 22 patients after unilateral vestibular neuritis and unilateral absent caloric responses. We found that the ipsilesional vestibular evoked potentials were abolished in every patient after unilateral vestibular neurectomy. In vestibular neuritis patients we found that the ipsilesional vestibular evoked potentials were absent in some but not in all cases. These findings confirm that the p13-n23 potential is of vestibular origin and also show that it is not of lateral canal origin.

The effect of anxiety induction on the regional uptake of 99mTc-exametazime in simple phobia as shown by single photon emission tomography (SPET).

Ten patients suffering from DSM-III-R simple phobia were studied under two conditions: (a) while listening to a 4 min relaxation tape, and (b) while listening to a 4 min audio tape describing exposure to the phobic stimulus. During each condition, subjects were injected with 99mTc-Exametazime, a marker of regional cerebral blood flow. Subjective and psychophysiological measures indicated a marked effect of the anxiety induction procedure. Ratio analysis of the SPET data revealed reductions in tracer uptake largely confined to posterior cerebral regions bilaterally. Analysis of brain regions of

The Crib-O-Gram in the NICU: an evaluation based on brain stem electric response audiometry.

This study evaluated the Crib-O-Gram as a screening test for hearing loss in NICU infants using Brain Stem Electric Response Audiometry (BERA) as the standard. Two Crib-O-Gram tests were administered to 280 babies within 48 hours of BERA testing. An additional 26 babies received BERA and one Crib-O-Gram test. Correlation coefficients for the two Crib-O-Gram scalar scores were calculated separately for a group of preterm (31 to 37 weeks) and a group of full term and older (38 to 54 weeks) infants, with values of 0.36 and 0.52, respectively. This indicates that the Crib-O-Gram has poor reliabili

Visual Implicit Learning and Speech Recognition in Adult Post-Lingual Cochlear Implant Users.

Implicit learning is thought to play an important role in speech recognition under challenging conditions. However, auditory deprivation has been proposed to influence implicit learning, including in the visual modality, although evidence in adults with post-lingual deafness is limited. Therefore, we investigated implicit visual learning and its associations with speech recognition in adults with post-lingual deafness who use cochlear implants (CIs). Thus, this study focuses on the effects of late auditory deprivation rather than on the effects of early deprivation associated with congenital d

Comparing physiological signatures of synaptopathic noise exposure and carboplatin-induced inner-hair-cell dysfunction in chinchillas.

Aging and noise over-exposure lead to complex mixtures of cochlear degradation that impair the structure and function of outer hair cells (OHCs), inner hair cells (IHCs), and the cochlear nerve. However, IHC damage and cochlear synaptopathy (CS) remain pathologies "hidden" from the audiogram. This study aimed to compare and contrast the physiological signatures of these two popular and distinct exposure paradigms using promising non-invasive assays: Envelope Following Responses (EFRs), Auditory Brainstem Response (ABRs), Wideband Middle-Ear Muscle Reflexes (WB-MEMRs), and Distortion Product Ot

Hearing Aid Noise Reduction Algorithms Support Neural Speech Tracking by Enhancing Spectrotemporal Consistency of Phase-Locked Brain Responses to Acoustic Edges.

Previous works that have analyzed electroencephalographic (EEG) speech envelope encoding in hearing-aid users using stimulus reconstruction (SR) approaches have shown that noise reduction (NR) algorithms can improve the neural tracking of speech in noise. Beyond enhancing speech envelope encoding, NR may also restore the perceptibility of acoustic edges that trigger auditory late responses (ALRs), likely promoting more consistent ALR elicitation and thus enhancing brain-to-speech synchronization. To investigate this hypothesis, 26 hearing-impaired listeners were fitted with bilateral hearing a

Spontaneous Otoacoustic Emissions in TectaY1870C/+ Mice Reflect Changes in Cochlear Amplification and How It Is Controlled by the Tectorial Membrane.

Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) recorded from the ear canal in the absence of sound reflect cochlear amplification, an outer hair cell (OHC) process required for the extraordinary sensitivity and frequency selectivity of mammalian hearing. Although wild-type mice rarely emit, those with mutations that influence the tectorial membrane (TM) show an incidence of SOAEs similar to that in humans. In this report, we characterized mice with a missense mutation in Tecta, a gene required for the formation of the striated-sheet matrix within the core of the TM. Mice heterozygous for the Y1870C

Impaired speech perception in noise with a normal audiogram: No evidence for cochlear synaptopathy and no relation to lifetime noise exposure.

In rodents, noise exposure can destroy synapses between inner hair cells and auditory nerve fibers ("cochlear synaptopathy") without causing hair cell loss. Noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy usually leaves cochlear thresholds unaltered, but is associated with long-term reductions in auditory brainstem response (ABR) amplitudes at medium-to-high sound levels. This pathophysiology has been suggested to degrade speech perception in noise (SPiN), perhaps explaining why SPiN ability varies so widely among audiometrically normal humans. The present study is the first to test for evidence of cochle
