Exploring the Impact of Perceived Parenting, Interparental Dynamics, and Childhood Traumatic Experience on BDSM Interests.

There is growing scientific interest in understanding the psychological and biological mechanisms underlying preferences for BDSM (Bondage/Discipline, Dominance/Submission, and Sadism/Masochism). However, little research has assessed the influence of perceived parenting styles on healthy sexual interests and behavior and how early-life experiences relate to adult BDSM interests. In the current study, we focus on the possible influence of experienced parenting style, perceived interparental dynamics, and childhood traumatic experience on BDSM interest. A cross-sectional survey was conducted by

Microgel-crosslinked, thermo- and mechano- dual responsive, ketoprofen-loaded hydrogels with high mechanical properties and rapid response.

Smart hydrogels have advanced rapidly in recent years. However, systems responsive to a single stimulus are typically triggered by specific cues, limiting their adaptability in complex and dynamic biological environments. To overcome this limitation, this study developed a dual-responsive hydrogel sensitive to both temperature and mechanical stress. The hydrogel consists of a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) matrix crosslinked with ketoprofen-loaded, vinyl-functionalized PNIPAM microgels (MGVs), engineered as a transdermal platform for dynamically regulated drug release. The PNIPAM-based h

β-Glucan in antiviral defense: mechanisms, immune modulation, and therapeutic prospects.

β-Glucans, naturally occurring β-D-glucose polysaccharides from fungi, yeast, bacteria, algae, and cereals, have emerged as promising immunomodulatory agents in antiviral defense. Their structural diversity-encompassing β-1,3, β-1,6, and β-1,4 linkages-underpins varied solubility, bioavailability, and biological activity, driving their therapeutic potential. Unlike conventional antivirals that target viral replication, β-glucans enhance host immunity by activating innate and adaptive responses through receptors such as dectin-1, toll-like receptors, and complement receptor 3, thereby stimulati

Targeted Cellular Treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic autoimmune disease affecting all organ systems. The disease preferentially affects females of childbearing age. It runs a variable course. It may run a mild course that may never lead to severe disease and manifestations from critical organ systems. However, it may also run an undulating course with periods of mild and severe disease. It may run as a mild disease, quickly deteriorating to severe disease and affecting multiple organ systems. Various immune pathways related both to the innate and adaptive immune response are involved in the pathog

Changes in NK Cells and Exhausted Th Cell Phenotype in RA Patients Treated with Janus Kinase Inhibitors: Implications for Adverse Effects.

Recent concerns regarding the safety of Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKis) have prompted investigation into their impact on immune cell subsets in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. This study aims to analyse alterations in immune cell populations induced by JAKis that may contribute to adverse events, such as infections or malignancies. This study included 78 RA patients meeting ACR/EULAR criteria with an established treatment with JAKis (tofacitinib, baricitinib, upadacitinib, or filgotinib), 20 healthy donors, and 20 RA patients treated with biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (b

Variable admittance control with sEMG-based support for wearable wrist exoskeleton.

INTRODUCTION: Wrist function impairment is common after stroke and heavily impacts the execution of daily tasks. Robotic therapy, and more specifically wearable exoskeletons, have the potential to boost training dose in context-relevant scenarios, promote voluntary effort through motor intent detection, and mitigate the effect of gravity. Portable exoskeletons are often non-backdrivable and it is challenging to make their control safe, reactive and stable. Admittance control is often used in this case, however, this type of control can become unstable when the supported biological joint stiffe

The efficient prediction of inflammatory osteolysis caused by polylactic acid through network toxicology and molecular docking strategy.

Polylactic acid (PLA), as a bioplastic, is extensively utilized in bone tissue engineering for its biocompatibility, adaptability and affordability. However, the toxicological research of PLA is still limited. The hydrolysis products of PLA induced inflammatory response which caused inflammatory osteolysis mediated by oxidative damage through the recruitment of macrophages and the accumulation of foreign body multinucleated giant cells, ultimately leading to the failure of bone tissue regeneration. The lack of effective treatments highlights the importance of finding new therapies. This study

Managing the clinical heterogeneity of patients with Still's disease, from early diagnosis to timely treatment.

Still's disease is an inflammatory syndrome affecting patients across all ages, previously known as systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA) in children and adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) in adults. Multiple lines of evidence reported overlapping clinical features between sJIA and AOSD, commonly manifesting with daily fever, arthritis, evanescent salmon-coloured skin rash. The concomitant various degree of multiorgan involvement may increase the heterogeneity of the patient clinical picture. In active patients, a typical hyperferritinemia is recognized in association with increases of

Orthobiologics and Peptide Therapy for Central Nervous System Repair in Neurodegenerative Conditions.

Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease remain the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders associated with aging and continue to lack curative treatments. Their pathophysiology is often multifaceted, encompassing protein aggregation, mitochondrial dysfunction, chronic neuroinflammation, synaptic degeneration, and vascular compromise. This complex landscape reduces the effectiveness of single-target pharmacological agents and underscores the need for therapies capable of acting across multiple axes. Orthobiologics and peptide-based strategies exemplify this approach. Autologous cellular

Integrative Analysis of Plasma Proteome and Genome Reveals Novel Drug Targets for Chronic Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and nasal polyps (NP) are chronic inflammatory conditions with unsatisfactory treatment outcomes due to frequent recurrence of refractory disease. Identifying new therapeutic targets is essential. METHODS: We conducted a proteome-wide Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis by integrating genome-wide association study genomic data of CRS/NP with cis-proteomic quantitative trait locus data to identify plasma proteins associated with CRS/NP risk. We validated the main findings using the Steiger test, Bayesian colocalisation, summary-data-based MR, and prot

An isothermal amplification-bridged ratiometric DNA switch for sensitive detection of viral gene fragments.

The detection of viral gene fragments is essential for diagnosing and screening viral infections, managing virus transmission, and controlling epidemics. In this study, we developed an isothermal amplification-bridged DNA switch designed for the sensitive detection of viral gene fragments. Specifically, the binding of the target viral gene fragment to the recognition sequences triggers isothermal amplification, resulting in the production of multiple DNA products. Consequently, a single target gene fragment is transformed into approximately 1250 DNA products, which can subsequently activate th

Chicken Embryo as an In Vivo Model to Revive Viable but Non-Culturable Pathogens.

The chicken embryo has emerged as a popular in vivo model with increasing application in biomedical research due to its simplicity, affordability, and adaptability in the study of various biological phenomena. This model has been used to investigate microbial pathogenicity and is becoming a useful tool to study bacterial dormancy. The viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state is a dormant state in which bacteria become metabolically quiescent and resistant to cultivation to preserve their viability in harsh environments. Under favorable conditions, VBNC bacteria can wake up back into a metabolica

Improved interpretability in LFADS models using a learned, context-dependent per-trial bias.

The computation-through-dynamics perspective argues that biological neural circuits process information via the continuous evolution of their internal states. Inspired by this perspective, Latent Factor Activity using Dynamical systems (LFADS, [1]) identifies a generative model consistent with the neural activity recordings. LFADS models neural dynamics with a recurrent neural network (RNN) generator, which results in excellent fit to the data. However, it has been difficult to understand the dynamics of the LFADS generator. In this work, we show that this poor interpretability arises in part
