Diagnosis and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome and insulin resistance.

PCOS is a complex syndrome that includes clinical and biochemical evidence of hyperandrogenism and hyperinsulinism. Adolescents with PCOS are affected by the diagnosis with both short-term and long-term consequences. Adolescents with PCOS report lower self-esteem and quality of life, based on standard assessments, when compared with age matched peers. These young women also are concerned about future fertility, which may affect psychological well being and health behaviors. In addition, patients with PCOS are at an increased risk for development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, metaboli

Overweight as a risk factor in children: a focus on ethnicity.

The prevalence of overweight in youth is increasing dramatically in the United States. The intimate relationship of obesity and overweight with cardiovascular risk factors and diabetes in adults raises concern for the likelihood of subsequent disease development in children. Ethnic minorities are so disproportionately affected by overweight that a call to action is necessary. The International Society on Hypertension in Blacks convened this work group as part of a larger effort to focus on cardiovascular risk protection beginning in childhood and adolescence, entitled the "Children are Our Mes

Lipid status in adolescents born with low birth weight.

The study compared anthropometric parameters and lipid status of adolescent boys and girls (14-16 y) born with LBW or ABW. Values for body weight and height of LBW adolescents were lower than those for ABW's. BMI differed significantly between LBW and ABW boys. In LBW boys, serum LDL-C level was somewhat lower, and the ApoA1 concentration was higher than in ABW's. Other lipid parameters did not differ among the corresponding groups. These data suggest that hypercholesterolemia, which is seen in LBW adults, must develop in older ages, and the irregular lifestyle including improper nutritional h

Smartphone addiction, physical activity engagement, and sleep quality in Chinese adolescents: a parallel and serial mediation model.

INTRODUCTION: Excessive smartphone use has become a major public health concern among adolescents, particularly in China where smartphone use is widespread. Although smartphone addiction is consistently associated with poor sleep quality, the mechanisms underlying this association remain insufficiently understood. This study examined whether physical activity engagement and depressive symptoms operate as parallel and serial mediators linking smartphone addiction to sleep quality in Chinese adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 612 adolescents (Mage = 14.2 years, S

Neuromuscular Changes During the Six-Minute Walk Test in Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease.

Children/adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience muscle-related impairments and declines in physical function. These deficits result from chronic anemia and impaired oxygen delivery, limiting the development of safe and effective exercise-based interventions. To better understand the effects of SCD on sustained activity, this study aimed to compare the physical function of children/adolescents with SCD to normative values and evaluate changes in neuromuscular function and muscle oxygenation during the 6-min walk test (6MWT). Each child/adolescent underwent a standardized 6MWT whi

Distinct Associations of Threat and Deprivation With Changes in Affective Control during Adolescence: A Longitudinal Population-Based Study.

Childhood adversity has been linked to disruptions in the development of emotion regulation, yet few longitudinal studies have examined whether distinct dimensions of adversity are differentially associated with changes in affective inhibitory control across adolescence. This study examined whether threat and deprivation experiences differentially predicted changes in affective inhibitory control across early to middle adolescence. Participants were 902 adolescents (51.5% girls) from the UEVO study, assessed at ages 12-14 years at Time 1 (T1) and 15-16 years at Time 2 (T2). Affective inhibitor

Research Review: Sex differences in the clinical correlates of nonsuicidal self-injury in adolescents - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), or 'the deliberate, self-inflicted destruction of body tissue…without suicidal intent and for purposes not culturally sanctioned', is a robust predictor of future suicide-related behavior and therefore a modifiable target for suicide prevention. The prevalence of NSSI is rising in adolescents, particularly among females; however, it is unknown whether sex differences also exist in the clinical and psychosocial factors associated with NSSI. Understanding how the correlates of NSSI differ by sex is important for developing tailored treatments. This stu
