Does transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation affect vagally mediated heart rate variability? A living and interactive Bayesian meta-analysis.

Non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, such as transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), have considerable potential for clinical use. Beneficial effects of taVNS have been demonstrated on symptoms in patients with mental or neurological disorders as well as transdiagnostic dimensions, including mood and motivation. However, since taVNS research is still an emerging field, the underlying neurophysiological processes are not yet fully understood, and the replicability of findings on biomarkers of taVNS effects has been questioned. The objective of this analysis was to synthe

Association between postsurgical pain and heart rate variability: protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical interventions can elicit neuroendocrine responses and sympathovagal imbalance, ultimately affecting cardiac autonomic function. Cardiac complications account for 30% of postoperative complications and are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality following non-cardiac surgery. One cardiovascular parameter, heart rate variability (HRV), has been found to be predictive of postoperative morbidity and mortality. HRV is defined as variation in time intervals between heartbeats and is affected by cardiac autonomic balance. Furthermore, altered HRV has been shown to predict

Changes in sympathetic nervous system activity after renal denervation: results from the randomised Oslo RDN study.

PURPOSE: Sympathetic nervous system (SNS) over-activity is associated with essential hypertension. Renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) possibly lowers office- and ambulatory blood pressure (BP) in patients with treatment-resistant hypertension (TRH). We aimed to assess the effect of RDN compared to drug adjustment on SNS activity among patients with TRH by measuring plasma catecholamines and heart rate variability (HRV) during stress tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with TRH were randomised to RDN (n = 9) or Drug Adjustment (DA) (n = 10). We measured continuous HRV and beat-to-beat-BP u

The autonomic correlates of dysphoric rumination and post-rumination savoring.

Trait dysphoric rumination is a transdiagnostic factor associated with depression and anxiety that has also been linked with blunted respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), an index of reduced emotion regulation capacity. However, the autonomic correlates of state dysphoric rumination remain unclear. We examined the physiological correlates of state dysphoric rumination and the potential repairing effects of savoring on autonomic functioning. To provide a comprehensive assessment of autonomic correlates, we examined changes in parasympathetic (RSA) and sympathetic (cardiac pre-ejection period, PEP

Cardiac Autonomic Neuropathy: A Progressive Consequence of Chronic Low-Grade Inflammation in Type 2 Diabetes and Related Metabolic Disorders.

Cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is one of the earliest complications of type 2 diabetes (T2D), presenting a silent cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Recent research relates the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease in T2D to an ensuing chronic, low-grade proinflammatory and pro-oxidative environment, being the hallmark of the metabolic syndrome. Metabolic inflammation emerges as adipose tissue inflammatory changes extending systemically, on the advent of hyperglycemia, to reach central regions of the brain. In light of changes in glucose and insulin homeostasis, dysbiosis or

Autonomic dysfunction in cardiac amyloidosis assessed by heart rate variability and heart rate turbulence.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and autonomic nervous imbalance due to amyloid infiltration. However, autonomic dysfunction is often seen in heart failure (HF) with LVH from other etiologies. We aimed to characterize autonomic dysfunction in CA from other etiologies of LVH. METHODS: Fifty-five HF patients with LVH (35 males, mean age 65 ± 16 years) were enrolled. LVH was defined as left ventricular mass index measured by echocardiography >95 g/m2 in women and 115 g/m2 in men. The etiology was as follows: amyloid light chain (AL)-CA,

The Effect of Breath Pacing on Task Switching and Working Memory.

The cortical and subcortical circuit regulating both cognition and cardiac autonomic interactions are already well established. This circuit has mainly been analyzed from cortex to heart. Thus, the heart rate variability (HRV) is usually considered a reflection of cortical activity. In this paper, we investigate whether HRV changes affect cortical activity. Short-term local autonomic changes were induced by three breathing strategies: spontaneous (Control), normal (NB) and slow paced breathing (SB). We measured the performance in two cognition domains: executive functions and processing speed.

Exercise based assessment of cardiac autonomic function in type 1 versus type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is a complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) that is associated with increased mortality. Exercise-based assessment of autonomic function has identified diminished parasympathetic reactivation after exercise in type 2 DM. It is postulated herein, that this would be more prominent among those with type 1 DM. METHODS: Sixteen subjects with type 1 DM (age 32.9 ± 10.1 years), 18 subjects with type 2 DM (55.4 ± 8.0 years) and 30 controls (44.0 ± 11.6 years) underwent exercise-based assessment of autonomic function. Two 16-min submaximal bicycle tests w

Effects of Cigarette Smoking on Cardiac Autonomic Responses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

It has been suggested that some of the adverse, long-term cardiovascular outcomes of smoking are mediated by impaired autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Yet, this association is currently inconclusive. Heart rate variability (HRV) and the deep breathing test (DBT) represent common quantitative markers of ANS activity due to their simplicity and reliability. This large cross-sectional study was designed to assess the effect of active smoking on ANS function as manifested by HRV or DBT abnormalities. Electrocardiograms were recorded at rest for 5 min and during forced metronomic breathing.…

Early sympathetic neural responses during a cold pressor test linked to pain perception.

PURPOSE: There is considerable interindividual variability in the perception of pain. Given that pain management is a major public health problem, gaining insight into the underlying physiology of these perceptual differences is important. We tested the hypothesis that when interindividual variability in initial muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) responses to a cold pressor test (CPT) is identified, the divergent responses will be linked to differences in pain perception in healthy young men and women. METHODS: In the supine position, blood pressure (BP) and MSNA were measured at baseli

Reactive Heart Rate Variability and Cardiac Entropy in Children with Internalizing Disorder and Healthy Controls.

Atypical vagal reactivity has been linked to internalizing psychopathology and less adaptive emotion regulation, but reactive cardiac entropy is largely unexplored. Therefore, this study investigated reactive vagally-mediated heart-rate variability (vmHRV) and cardiac entropy in relation to emotion regulation. Electrocardiograms of 32 children (9-13 years) with internalizing difficulties and 25 healthy controls were recorded during a baseline and a sad film. Reactivity-measures were calculated from the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) and sample entropy (SampEn). Emotion regu

Effect of exercise training on heart rate variability in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: A randomized controlled trial.

While obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases chemoreflex, leading to an autonomic dysfunction in the long term, no studies have yet assessed the potential benefit of exercise on cardiac autonomic activity in these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate potential improvement in cardiac autonomic function (CAF) measured through heart rate variability (HRV) after a 9-month physical activity program in patients with OSA. Seventy-four patients with moderate OSA, aged 40-80 years, were randomly assigned to an exercise group (n = 36, 3 × 1 h/wk) or a control group (n = 38) during 9 months.

The Management of Hypertension in Pre-Aneurysmal Treatment Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Patients.

BACKGROUND: Management of hypertension in subarachnoid hemorrhage patients within the preaneurysmal treatment period remains ambiguous, in part due to the lack of high-level, evidence-based guidelines. Despite this, current recommendations offer guidance regarding certain parameters (e.g., mean arterial pressure, systolic blood pressure). However, managing hypertension within this critical period is difficult because a fine balance must be achieved between lowering blood pressure enough to minimize the risk of rebleeding and preventing reduced cerebral perfusion and subsequent ischemic damage.

Autonomic Responses to Emotional Stimuli in Children Affected by Facial Palsy: The Case of Moebius Syndrome.

According to embodied simulation theories, others' emotions are recognized by the unconscious mimicking of observed facial expressions, which requires the implicit activation of the motor programs that produce a specific expression. Motor responses performed during the expression of a given emotion are hypothesized to be directly linked to autonomic responses associated with that emotional behavior. We tested this hypothesis in 9 children (M age = 5.66) affected by Moebius syndrome (MBS) and 15 control children (M age = 6.6). MBS is a neurological congenital disorder characterized by underdeve

Cardiovascular autonomic reflex tests and serum FGF21 levels in overweight and normal-weight men and women.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated cardiovascular autonomic reflexes and serum fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), a surrogate marker of mitochondrial function, in a cohort of overweight and normal-weight adults (n = 42). METHODS: Indices of autonomic function were monitored during supine rest, autonomic reflex tests and submaximal clinical exercise test, with heart rate variables and blood pressure measured with an automatic system. RESULTS: Markers of sympathetic dominance were accentuated in overweight adults, including elevated resting low-frequency to the high-frequency ratio for heart rate varia

Paralytic ileus as the presenting symptom for Guillain-Barré syndrome: a case report.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute neuroimmunological disorder characterized by rapidly ascending symmetrical limb weakness, areflexia, and sensory deficits. Approximately 65% of patients with GBS present with autonomic dysfunction, which commonly occurs in advanced stages. However, paralytic ileus, a sign of gastrointestinal dysautonomia, is rare as the presenting feature in GBS before motor weakness becomes evident. We report the case of a 54-year-old man admitted to the Emergency Department with paralytic ileus as the prodromal feature in early-stage GBS. Total parenteral feeding and

Autonomic regulation in response to stress: The influence of anticipatory emotion regulation strategies and trait rumination.

According to the neurocognitive framework for regulation expectation, adaptively regulating emotions in anticipation of a stressful event should help individuals deal with the stressor itself. The goal of this study was twofold: first, the authors compared the influence of adaptive versus maladaptive anticipatory emotion regulation (ER) on the autonomic system during anticipation of, confrontation with, and recovery from a stressor; second, they explored whether trait rumination moderated this relationship. The authors collected data from 56 healthy female undergraduates during a public speaki

Dual autonomic inhibitory action of central Apelin on gastric motor functions in rats.

Centrally administered apelin has been shown to inhibit gastric emptying (GE) in rodents, however, the relevant mechanism has been investigated incompletely. Using male Wistar rats, we investigated the efferent pathways involved in gastroinhibitory action of central apelin. Stereotaxic intracerebroventricular (icv) cannulation, subdiaphragmatic vagotomy (VGX) and/or celiac ganglionectomy (CGX) were performed 7 days prior to the experiments. Apelin-13 was administered (30 nmol, icv) 90 min prior to GE measurement. Nitric oxide synthase inhibitor L-NAME (100 mg/kg), sympatholytic agent guanethid
