BACKGROUND: Tearing of the anterior capsule of the shoulder is a rare but debilitating injury for throwing athletes. However, there is very little in the literature to guide its diagnosis and treatment. In this case series, we outline our experience with anterior capsular tears of the shoulder in professional baseball players.

This paper is a review of our most recent findings concerning the osteo-dynamics of the bony otic capsule and pathogenesis of otosclerosis. By exploring the spatial relationship between normal perilabyrinthine bone remodeling, the viability and spatial distribution of labyrinthine osteocytes, and the location of otosclerosis, a unique spatial pattern emerged. PURPOSE: To image the posterior zonular attachment site by using environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM).
METHODS: A custom-made device was designed to mount human cadaveric lenses, with the zonule, ciliary body, and sclera attached, inside an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). The mount was designed to allow radial stretching to enhance exposure of the accommodation apparatus. Seven fresh human eye bank eyes (age: 62-82 years; 24-48 hours after death) were dissected, mounted, and imaged in wet mode. The insertion site of the posterior zonule was examined.

We developed a model of sequential influenza A virus (IAV)-Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C (Nm) infection in BALB/c mice. Mice infected intranasally with a sublethal IAV dose (260 pfu) were superinfected intranasally with Nm. Between 1987 and 1992, nine patients (three men and six women; mean age, 75 years) presented with chronic postoperative endophthalmitis after cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.
