INTRODUCTION: Early degenerative changes in the nucleus pulposus (NP) are observed after the disappearance of notochordal cells (NCs). Thus, it has been suggested that NCs play an important role in maintaining the NP and may have a regenerative potential on other cells of the NP. As the number of resident NP cells (NPCs) decreases in a degenerating disc, mesenchymal stromal (stem) cells (MSCs) may be used for cell supplementation. In this study, using cells of one species, the regenerative potential of canine NCs was assessed in long-term three-dimensional coculture with canine NPCs or MSCs.

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the "normal" radiographic parameters of the sagittal profile of the spine in asymptomatic children.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There was consensus that cervical kyphosis is pathologic, but we suspected that the cervical kyphosis or loss of cervical lordosis is abnormal in asymptomatic children and adolescents. And we measured the pediatric sagittal profiles including the cervical lordosis for asymptomatic subjects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Analysis of 181 children without spinal pathology was performed. Radiographic measurements

The ideal classification of spinal trauma does not yet exist, primarily because the combination of morphological, biomechanical and clinical parameters in one single nomenclature has proved impossible. For radiologists and surgeons who work closely together, only a few classifications of injury patterns have been shown to be useful enough to provide rapid and stable therapy decisions. Many classifications are too complex to be practical for day-to-day practice, such as the Magerl classification, which has been adopted by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen (AO). Not least because o

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neoplastic disease damages the spine more often than trauma. Metastatic tumour causes vertebral column instability and neurological deficit. Surgical intervention indications depend on the patient's general and neurological status. The aim of neuro-orthopaedic treatment is to achieve pain relief and neurological improvement. Spine stability is secured by various implant systems. The aim of the paper is to present indications, operative techniques and stabilisation methods in patients with metastatic spine disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were 73 patients included i

OBJECTIVE: To determine injuries significantly associated with traumatic thoracic spine (T-spine) fractures
METHODS: This was a case-control study undertaken in an adult trauma centre. Cases were patients admitted with a traumatic T-spine fracture between January 1999 and August 2007. Each case had two controls matched for sex, age (+/-5 years) and injury severity classification (major/minor). Data were collected from patient medical records and the trauma service database. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine injuries significantly associated with T-spine fracture.

Since 1988, Fuji Computed Radiography (FCR) system (Fuji Medical Systems, Tokyo, Japan) has been used at Osaka Prefectural Hospital (Osaka, Japan) for all kinds of images. In this paper, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of computed radiography (CR) images from the standpoint of an orthopedic surgeon. Contours, which can not be seen on conventional radiographs, are clearly visualized on the CR image. Adequate information for diagnosis can be obtained with a great reduction in x-ray exposure during the screening of scoliosis or congenital dislocation of hip joint. However, because the

To test whether gadolinium-DTPA-enhanced MR would increase the conspicuity of extradural degenerative disease in the previously unoperated patient, we prospectively studied a group of 30 patients with symptoms suggestive of disk disease. Surgical findings and pathologic correlations were used as an objective measure of accuracy. Gadolinium-DTPA increased the confidence of diagnosis at one of eight operated cervical levels (six patients) and changed the diagnosis from extradural degenerative disease to tumor in one patient. The mechanism of enhancement of the epidural space and peridiskal regio

OBJECTIVE: The current Roussouly classification identifies four groups of "normal" sagittal spine morphology, which has greatly expanded the understanding of normal heterogeneity of the spine. While there has been extensive characterization of the influence of spinopelvic parameters on outcomes after degenerative spine surgery, the influence of spinopelvic parameters on thoracolumbar trauma has yet to be described. The goal of this study was to determine if spinopelvic parameters and global spine morphology influence fracture location, fracture morphology, and rate of neurological deficit in t

BackgroundDue to lower limb impairment, people use greater trunk flexion strategies and cannot maintain the alignment of the upper body, leading to loss of lordosis over time.ObjectiveA comprehensive study is needed to understand the heightened trunk flexion effect on lumbar and cervical lordosis and associated joint moments.MethodsThe three sit-to-stand-to-sit strategies, Natural, Full trunk flexion, and Pelvis-spine alignment, were conducted in 3D motion capture. The hypothesis is that increasing the total lumbar and cervical lordosis depth will reduce the total lumbosacral and cervicothorac

INTRODUCTION: The risks and benefits of extending posterior cervical decompression and fusion (PCDF) constructs across the cervicothoracic junction (CTJ) remain controversial. Previous studies have used fusions beginning at different levels and varying in construct length. There are no studies that examine the effect of crossing the CTJ on opioid consumption. This study aims to compare short-term and long-term postoperative outcomes among patients undergoing PCDF at C3 and ending at C7, T1, or T2.
METHODS: Adult patients who underwent C3-C7, C3-T1, and C3-T2 PCDF from 2017 to 2022 were identi

BACKGROUND: Vertebral fractures are associated with enduring back pain, diminished quality of life, as well as increased morbidity and mortality. Existing epidemiological data for cervical and thoracic vertebral fractures are limited by insufficiently powered studies and a failure to evaluate the mechanism of injury.
QUESTION/PURPOSE: What are the temporal trends in incidence, patient characteristics, and injury mechanisms of cervical and thoracic vertebral fractures in the United States from 2003 to 2021?
METHODS: The United States National Electronic Injury Surveillance System-All Injury P

INTRODUCTION: Studies analyzing postures and mobility of the thoracic spine in the context of cervicogenic headache are missing. Insight in these parameters is needed since the cervical and thoracic spine are biomechanically related.
OBJECTIVE: To compare self-perceived optimal and habitual postures, active-assisted maximal range of motion, and repositioning error of the upper-thoracic and lower-thoracic spine between a cervicogenic headache-group and matched healthy control-group before and after a 30 min-laptop-task.
METHODS: A non-randomized longitudinal design was used to compare thoraci

Cervical spine fracture-dislocation in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and severe thoracic kyphosis is extremely unstable. This study was performed to investigate the efficacy and safety of halo vest application before and during surgery for these patients. We retrospectively analyzed the case histories, operations, neurologic outcomes, follow-up data, and imaging records of 25 patients with AS and severe thoracic kyphosis who underwent surgical treatment of cervical fracture-dislocation in our department from 2008 to 2019. A halo vest was used to reduce and immobilize the fractured

BACKGROUND: Although secondary cervicothoracic scoliosis frequently occurs in patients with congenital muscular torticollis (CMT), the relationship between scoliosis and CMT has not been evaluated. This study aims to evaluate the effects of surgical release of sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle on secondary cervicothoracic scoliosis in patients with CMT and determine factors affecting the improvement of scoliosis after surgical release of SCM muscle.
METHODS: Eighty-seven of the 106 patients, confirmed as having secondary cervicothoracic scoliosis with CMT with a minimum 1-year follow-up, were

OBJECTIVE: Numerous studies have attempted to delineate the normative value for T1S-CL (T1 slope minus cervical lordosis) as a marker for both cervical deformity and a goal for correction similar to how PI-LL (pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis) mismatch informs decision making in thoracolumbar adult spinal deformity (ASD). The goal of this study was to define the relationship between T1 slope (T1S) and cervical lordosis (CL). METHODS: This is a retrospective review of a prospective database. Surgical ASD cases were initially analyzed. Analysis across the sagittal parameters was performed. Linea

BACKGROUND: Patients with cervical or high-thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) often present reduced gastric emptying and early satiety. Ghrelin provokes motility via gastric vagal neurocircuitry and ghrelin receptor agonists offer a therapeutic option for gastroparesis. We have previously shown that experimental high-thoracic injury (T3-SCI) diminishes sensitivity to another gastrointestinal peptide, cholecystokinin. This study tests the hypothesis that T3-SCI impairs the vagally mediated response to ghrelin.
METHODS: We investigated ghrelin sensitivity in control and T3-SCI rats at 3-days or

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The ability of ultrasound to provide detailed anatomic visualization while avoiding radiation exposure continues to make it an appealing tool for many practitioners of chronic pain management. This review will present the most recent evidence regarding the use of ultrasound-guidance for the performance of interventional procedures in the treatment of chronic pain.
RECENT FINDINGS: For a variety of different procedures, studies continue to compare ultrasound-guided techniques to commonly used fluoroscopic or landmark-based techniques. Small, randomized controlled trials are
