[Surgical options in the treatment of rectal prolapse: indications, techniques and results].

Two different approaches can be distinguished in the surgical treatment of rectal prolapse, i. e. the transabdominal route and the perineal procedures. The following article deals with both operative options with a detailed discussion of the Delorme's operation and the perineal rectosigmoidectomy, also known as the Altemeier procedure for the perineal techniques. Regarding abdominal operations simple rectopexy is compared with operations including bowel resection including minimally invasive approaches. In general, perineal procedures for full-thickness rectal prolapse cause less morbidity com

Effect of long-lasting nutritional prehabilitation on postoperative outcome in elective surgery for IBD.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Preoperative patient care optimisation appears to be crucial for obtaining good surgical outcomes. Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) underlines the necessity to recognize and treat malnutrition perioperatively and to prehabilitate with interventions that can modulate the lean body mass before and after surgery. This procedure has been extensively reported in colorectal cancer patients but in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) it has not yet been clearly evaluated. The aim of this study was to implement the perioperative nutritional items in surgical Crohn's disease (CD) a

Acceptance of disease and the quality of life in patients with enteric stoma.

INTRODUCTION: The main reason of the emergence of enteric stoma is colorectal cancer. Enteric stoma is a serious health, as well as life problem. In Poland, there are about 6,000 stoma surgeries yearly. It changes the functioning of patients, restricts their daily activity and influences their quality of life significantly. Therefore, in the modern treatment process, all spheres of human life and its surroundings are considered. The evaluation of the quality of life and the level of acceptance of the disease enables us to identify the regions in which patients require attention and help, as we

Role of Cardiac Anesthesiologists in Intraoperative Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery (ERACS) Protocol: A Retrospective Single-Center Study Analyzing Preliminary Results of a Yearlong ERACS Protocol Implementation.

INTRODUCTION: Enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery (ERACS) has been gaining rapid acceptance after multiple studies have demonstrated promising results in improved outcomes of enhanced recovery after surgery in other surgical fields (eg, colorectal, orthopedic, thoracic, etc). Cardiac surgery has several unique challenges, including sternotomy, cardiopulmonary bypass and associated coagulopathy, blood transfusion, and postoperative intensive care requirement. Nonetheless, selective cardiac surgical patients can still benefit from ERACS. Guidelines for perioperative care in cardiac surgery,

[Chinese clinical practice guidelines for standardized diagnosis and treatment of presacral cysts (2026 edition)].

Presacral cysts are rare cystic or cystic-solid masses located between the sacrococcygeal bone and the rectum, and complete surgical resection is the only curative treatment. Due to the complex anatomy of the presacral region, which is adjacent to the rectum, sacrum, and important vessels and nerves, surgical procedures are technically demanding and carry high-risk. Inappropriate surgical approaches and management often lead to complications such as residual cyst wall, recurrence, massive hemorrhage, and pelvic floor dysfunction. To further enhance the clinical understanding of presacral cysts

Walking Speed and Risk of Falling Patients Operated for Selected Malignant Tumors.

BACKGROUND: A literature review reveals that studies on walking and fall occurrences in the context of cancer have predominantly centered on geriatric patients. Nonetheless, cancer patients of all ages are susceptible to such risks. Both cancer and its treatments contribute to significant risk factors for disturbances in walking and falls, encompassing muscle weakness, impaired balance, reduced proprioception, cognitive impairment, and functional limitations. AIM: to assess walking speed and the risk of falls among patients undergoing surgery for the most common malignancies: breast (BU), lun

Initial results from an enhanced recovery program for pediatric cardiac surgical patients.

BACKGROUND: Over recent years, a number of enhanced recovery programs have appeared in first, adult colorectal surgery, and subsequently many other adult surgical specialties. Increasing interest in this approach to perioperative management in children culminated in the recent development of the first enhanced recovery pathway for pediatric intestinal surgery, endorsed by Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Society (ERAS®). In parallel, there has been increasing interest in the refinement of perioperative management of selected pediatric cardiac surgical patients, invariably referred to as "fast t…

Utility of expanded anterior column resection versus decompression-alone for local control in the management of carcinomatous vertebral column metastases undergoing adjuvant stereotactic radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: With improvements in adjuvant radiotherapy and minimally invasive surgical techniques, separation surgery has become the default surgical intervention for spine metastases at many centers. However, it is unclear if there is clinical benefit from anterior column resection in addition to simple epidural debulking prior to stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). PURPOSE: To examine the effect of anterior column debulking versus epidural disease resection alone in the local control of metastases to the bony spine. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. Can Acute Postoperative Pain Management After Tumour Resection Surgery Modulate Risk of Later Recurrence or Metastasis?

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a leading cause of mortality worldwide, but death is rarely from the primary tumour: Rather it is multi-organ dysfunction from metastatic disease that is responsible for up to 90% of cancer-related deaths. Surgical resection of the primary tumour is indicated in 70% of cases. The perioperative stress response, tissue hypoxia at the site of surgery, and acute pain contribute to immunosuppression and neo-angiogenesis, potentially promoting tumour survival, proliferation, and metastasis. Poorly controlled acute postoperative pain decreases Natural Killer (NK) immune cell act

Perioperative Probiotics or Synbiotics in Adults Undergoing Elective Abdominal Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

OBJECTIVE: To define the impact of perioperative treatment with probiotics or synbiotics on postoperative outcome in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. BACKGROUND: Postoperative surgical infection accounts for a third of all cases of sepsis, and is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics (preparations that combine probiotics and prebiotics) are nutritional adjuncts that are emerging as novel therapeutic modalities for preventing surgical infections. However, current evidence on their effects is conflicting. METHODS: A comprehensive search of the
