Development of an effective two-equation turbulence modeling approach for simulating aerosol deposition across a range of turbulence levels.

Pharmaceutical aerosol systems present a significant challenge to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling based on the need to capture multiple levels of turbulence, frequent transition between laminar and turbulent flows, anisotropic turbulent particle dispersion, and near-wall particle transport phenomena often within geometrically complex systems over multiple time scales. Two-equation turbulence models, such as the k-ω family of approximations, offer a computationally efficient solution approach, but are known to require the use of near-wall (NW) corrections and eddy interaction model

Identification of a novel transport system in Borrelia burgdorferi that links the inner and outer membranes.

Borrelia burgdorferi, the spirochete that causes Lyme disease, is a diderm organism that is similar to Gram-negative organisms in that it contains both an inner and outer membrane. Unlike typical Gram-negative organisms, however, B. burgdorferi lacks lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Using computational genome analyses and structural modeling, we identified a transport system containing six proteins in B. burgdorferi that are all orthologs to proteins found in the lipopolysaccharide transport (LPT) system that links the inner and outer membranes of Gram-negative organisms and is responsible for placin

Optimal placement of unified power flow controllers to improve dynamic voltage stability using power system variable based voltage stability indices.

This study examines a new approach to selecting the locations of unified power flow controllers (UPFCs) in power system networks based on a dynamic analysis of voltage stability. Power system voltage stability indices (VSIs) including the line stability index (LQP), the voltage collapse proximity indicator (VCPI), and the line stability index (Lmn) are employed to identify the most suitable locations in the system for UPFCs. In this study, the locations of the UPFCs are identified by dynamically varying the loads across all of the load buses to represent actual power system conditions. Simulat

An "ancient" complexity? Evolutionary morphology of the circulatory system in Xiphosura.

Horseshoe crabs (Xiphosura) have been an object of zoological research for almost 200 years. Although some morphological work on the circulatory system has been done, the three-dimensional structure of this complex organ system has never been shown satisfactorily and some crucial questions remain unanswered. Here, the circulatory systems of juveniles of the horseshoe crab taxa Limulus polyphemus and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda were investigated using a combination of an injection method and micro-computed tomography. Data were processed and 3D-visualized using reconstruction software. Further

Phase-noise tolerant fully-coherent optical coherence tomography angiography for high-contrast 3D microvasculature mapping.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has been extensively explored for the detection of pathological retinal changes arising in various ophthalmological diseases. Due to phase instability of conventional systems, most OCTA signal processing methods to date have relied on intensity-based averaging, despite the resulting lower contrast and dynamic range compared to coherent averaging approaches. In this work, we (1) present a novel computation pipeline that enables fully-coherent processing in any phase-stable or phase-unstable system, and (2) demonstrate the first angiography metric

Design and Implementation of an Eyewear-Integrated Infrared Eye-Tracking System.

Eye-tracking is a key enabling technology for smart eyewear, supporting hands-free interaction, accessibility, and context-aware human-machine interfaces under strict constraints on size, power consumption, and computational complexity. While camera-based solutions provide high accuracy, their integration into lightweight and low-power wearable platforms remains challenging. This paper is a feasibility study for the design, simulation, and experimental evaluation of a photosensor oculography (PSOG) eye-tracking system that is fully integrated into an eyewear frame, based on near-infrared (NIR)

Integrating Automated Simulation Workflows with 3D Visualization for Virtual Experiments in the Metaverse.

In many virtual experiments, multiple software packages are used with varied simulation types, pre- and post-processing tools, and tools to visualize the experiments' results-often a combination of all. The typical method of integrating these is a manual one, with bespoke solutions created for each application area, which scales poorly and impedes sharing and reproducibility. This protocol demonstrates the deployment and use of a locally containerized workflow system. Following it, users will launch a local Galaxy instance using Docker, create and run an OpenMC neutronics simulation workflow,

Effect of confinement on PH3 and OH3+ inversion.

Encapsulating molecules in nanocages such as C60 provides a unique opportunity to probe how spatial confinement alters structure and dynamics. We examine umbrella inversion in hydronium (OH3+) and phosphine (PH3) in the gas phase and inside C60. Inversion profile computations for OH3+ and PH3 are based on high-level correlated methods [CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ and aug-cc-pVQZ]. Modelling confined systems requires dealing with the cage and the encapsulated molecules together, which is computationally complex. Therefore, results pertaining to encapsulated systems are based on dispersion-corrected DFT

Modified lung ultrasound score to assess extent and prognosis in systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease-associated interstitial lung disease.

OBJECTIVES: Lung ultrasound (LUS) assesses lung lesion severity in systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease-associated interstitial lung disease (SARD-ILD). The ultrasound manifestations of SARD-ILD include pleural line (PL) abnormalities and heterogeneous B-line (BL) distribution. We aimed to investigate the feasibility of a modified ultrasound scoring system based on refined grading of BL and PL features in patients with SARD-ILD, to determine whether BLs and PLs can effectively reflect ILD patterns across different lung compartments. METHODS: One hundred and ninety-five patients with nine SAR

LLM-Based Unknown Function Automated Modeling in Sensor-Driven Systems for Multi-Language Software Security Verification.

The rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) has made software security and reliability a critical concern. With multi-language programs running on edge computing, embedded systems, and sensors, each connected device represents a potential attack vector, threatening data integrity and privacy. Symbolic execution is a key technique for automated vulnerability detection. However, unknown function interfaces, such as sensor interactions, limit traditional concrete or concolic execution due to uncertain function returns and missing symbolic expressions. Compared with system simulation, the

Localization of sentinel lymph nodes using augmented-reality system: a cadaveric feasibility study.

PURPOSE: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) helps stage melanoma. Pre-surgical single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) visualizes draining lymph nodes, but intraoperative gamma probe detection only estimates SLN location. This study evaluates augmented reality (AR) for projecting pre-surgical SLN imaging onto patients to aid precise localization and extraction. METHODS: Molecular sieves (8 mm) incubated in fluorine-18 simulated lymph nodes and were implanted in the head and neck region of cadavers. CRISPR and Artificial Intelligence in Neuroregeneration: Closed-Loop Strategies for Precision Medicine, Spinal Cord Repair, and Adaptive Neuro-Oncology.

Repairing the central nervous system (CNS) remains one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome in translational neurosciences. This is due to intrinsic growth inhibitors, extracellular matrix issues, the glial scar-form barrier, chronic neuroinflammation, and epigenetic silencing. The purpose of this review is to bring together findings from recent developments in genome editing and computational approaches, which center around the possible convergence of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) platforms and artificial intelligence (AI), towards precision neurore

Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Disease Risk: Association With Long-Term Exposure to Fine Particulate Matter.

OBJECTIVE: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a possible trigger of systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs). We investigated SARDs risk related to long-term exposure to PM2.5 and its components (ammonium, black carbon, mineral dust, sea salt, nitrate, sulfate, organic matter), the composition of which may affect toxicity. METHODS: We assembled an open cohort of Quebec adults (without SARDs) using administrative health data from April 2000 to December 2019. Our SARD case definition included physician billing and hospitalization diagnostic codes for systemic lupus, dermatomyositis, syste

Ligand field design enables quantum manipulation of spins in Ni2+ complexes.

Creating the next generation of quantum systems requires control and tunability, which are key features of molecules. To design these systems, one must consider the ground-state and excited-state manifolds. One class of systems with promise for quantum sensing applications, which require water solubility, are d8 Ni2+ ions in octahedral symmetry. Yet, most Ni2+ complexes feature large zero-field splitting, precluding manipulation by commercial microwave sources due to the relatively large spin-orbit coupling constant of Ni2+ (630 cm-1). Since low lying excited states also influence axial zero-f

Computational modeling of dorsal root ganglion stimulation using an Injectrode.

OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive neuromodulation therapies like the Injectrode, which is composed of a tightly wound polymer-coated platinum/iridium microcoil, offer a low-risk approach for administering electrical stimulation to the dorsal root ganglion (DRG). This flexible electrode is aimed to conform to the DRG. The stimulation occurs through a transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) patch, which subsequently transmits the stimulation to the Injectrode via a subcutaneous metal collector. However, effectiveness of stimulation relies on the specific geometrical configurations of the Injectr

A novel radiographic analysis system for subaxial cervical spine pedicle screw placement.

BACKGROUND: Precise pedicle screw placement of the subaxial cervical spine is difficult. Not every hospital is equipped with a guidance system that can provide effective help. Computed tomography (CT) scanning is almost a routine preoperative examination for cervical spine surgery in all hospitals. Appropriate measurement and analysis of the CT images could assist optimal cervical pedicle screw placement. The purpose of this study is to propose a new and universal method using computed tomography (CT) morphological parameters analysis to assist optimal cervical pedicle screw placement from C3
