Modulation of Auditory Cortex Activity in Salicylate-Induced Tinnitus Rats via Deep Brain Stimulation of the Inferior Colliculus.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus, a self-reported perceptual disorder, is currently believed to arise from maladaptive plasticity due to reduced sensory input. While deep brain stimulation (DBS) has shown promise in alleviating tinnitus-related behaviors, its effects on neuronal activity remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the spontaneous firing rates (SFRs) of the primary auditory cortex (A1) before and after DBS of the external cortex of the inferior colliculus (ECIC) in a rat model of tinnitus. METHODS: Tinnitus was induced in rats through sodium salicylate injections for 14 consecutive days,

Proposal and Efficacy of a Nurse-Led Pain Management Model for Neurointensive Care Based on the Precede-Proceed Model.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

OBJECTIVE: This study's objective is to establish a nurse-led pain management model for neurointensive care based on the Precede-Proceed model to provide a theoretical basis for clinical pain management in neurointensive care. Methods. ICU nurses were randomly divided into a control group (giving conventional routine pain care) and an experimental group (managed pain based on the Precede-Proceed model). The nurses from the experimental group were trained in the Precede-Proceed-based management. The nurses then treated a total of 410 critically ill patients, and the patients were randomly divid

Cerebral perfusion alterations and cerebral amyloid in autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate alterations in cerebral blood flow (CBF) using arterial spin-labeled MRI in autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease (ADAD) mutation carriers (MCs) in relation to cerebral amyloid and compared with age-matched healthy controls. BACKGROUND: Recent work has identified alterations in CBF in elderly subjects with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer dementia using MRI. However, similar studies are lacking in ADAD. Subjects with ADAD are generally free of significant vascular disease and offer the opportunity to measure CBF early in the pathologic process before significant s

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans in patients living in an endemic community in Brazil: immunological patterns before and after ivermectin treatmen.

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (Hr-CLM) is caused by animal hookworm larvae migrating in the human epidermis where they elicit an inflammatory response. This study describes the immunological profile in Hr-CLM patients. In 77 Hr-CLM patients from Manaus, Brazil, peripheral eosinophils were counted, and serum concentrations of total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and selected cytokines were determined by ELISA before and after treatment with ivermectin. Controls included patients' household members (endemic controls), non-endemic Brazilian and Japanese individuals. Eosinophil counts and total

Effects of induced stress on experimental pain sensitivity in chronic tension-type headache sufferers.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It has been proposed that stress may contribute to chronic tension-type headache (CTH) through hyperalgesic effects on already sensitized pain pathways in CTH sufferers. This hypothesis could be partially tested by examining effects of stress on mechanical and thermal pain sensitivity in CTH sufferers. Such examinations have not been reported to date. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, we measured cephalic and extra-cephalic pressure [pressure-pain threshold (PPT)] and cold-pain thresholds (CPT) in CTH sufferers (n = 8 females, n = 8 males) and healthy contro

A causal role for endothelin-1 in the vascular adaptation to skeletal muscle deconditioning in spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: Endothelin-1 (ET-1) contributes to the increased peripheral resistance in heart failure and hypertension. Physical inactivity is associated with cardiovascular disease and characterized by increased vascular tone. In this study, we assess the contribution of ET-1 to the increased vascular tone in the extremely deconditioned legs of spinal cord-injured (SCI) individuals before and after exercise training. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 8 controls and 8 SCI individuals, bilateral thigh blood flow was measured by plethysmography before and during the administration of an ET(A)/ET(B)-receptor

Implementation of the enhanced paper grip test in podiatric practice: A clinical audit of feasibility and association with recent falls.

BACKGROUND: Falls in older adults remain a major clinical concern. Although the Enhanced Paper Grip Test (EPGT), provides an objective measure of lower limb strength and has shown promise in controlled settings, its use in routine podiatric practice has not been described. AIM: To audit the implementation of the EPGT in routine private podiatric practice and to explore whether EPGT measures are associated with self-reported recent falls in older adults. METHODS: The EPGT was introduced on a trial basis in three independent private UK podiatry clinics for six months. People (aged ≥60 y) were

Investigation of cartilage modification for controlling immune reaction against xenogeneic cartilage.

INTRODUCTION: Allogeneic cartilages are decellularized when they are transplanted subcutaneously to avoid the immunoreaction in clinical practice. However, transplanting cartilage with chondrocytes would be beneficial because chondrocytes are essential for the maintenance of the cartilage. In this study, we investigated the effect of modifications to cartilage before transplantation for the suppression of immunoreactions. We utilized xenogeneic models because they are often employed in preclinical safety evaluations prior to clinical trials. If xenogeneic immunoreactions can be controlled, all

The Impact of Scalp Hair on Gunshot Residue Deposition: A Forensic Approach to Range of Fire Determination.

Range of fire determination in shooting fatalities classically depends on the gross presence, distribution, and density of visible gunshot residue (GSR), including soot, stippling, and bullet wipe surrounding the entrance wound. Scalp hair has been suggested to interfere with GSR deposition in head wounds, but few experimental studies have systematically addressed this variable. Misinterpretation of GSR findings in hair-covered wounds carries significant medicolegal consequences. In this study, controlled discharge testing was performed using a Ransom International Forensic Ballistic Machine.

Feasibility of home-based accelerated intermittent theta-burst stimulation (aiTBS) for depression: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an established treatment option for major depressive disorder (MDD) but is currently limited to clinical settings such as hospitals or doctors' offices. Technical and logistical challenges have so far prevented its application in patients' homes. METHODS: In this pilot study, five outpatients with MDD (aged 29-65 years), living up to 120 km from a tertiary care hospital (Regensburg, Germany), received home-based TMS treatment using an accelerated intermittent theta burst stimulation protocol (aiTBS; 5 sessions per day, 1800 pulses per s

Tactile exposure as a strategy for shaping food texture preferences in preschool children - a mixed-methods pilot study.

Food texture, such as the presence of lumps or pieces, is a common reason for food rejection among children. Yet, few strategies exist to support children with narrow texture preferences. This pilot study explored whether tactile exposure to food stimuli could improve children's preferences for food containing particles. Twenty-four children aged 3-6 years with an initial low preference for particulate textures, screened using a validated forced-choice questionnaire, participated in three tactile activities over one week. These included (1) searching for hidden objects in muesli and yoghurt, (

Factors associated with poor asthma control in children: A prediction model.

BACKGROUND: Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are the first-line therapy for pediatric asthma. However, very few studies have developed simple tools for predicting treatment outcomes in pediatric asthma. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to construct a predictive model for poor asthma control in children after 6 months of ICS therapy. METHODS: This retrospective study included children with asthma, aged 6-15 years, who received ICS with complete follow-up for 6 months. The potential factors associated with poor asthma control were also assessed. Poor control was considered if the child had partial or

Beyond GLP-1 Agonists: Plant-Derived Bioactive Compounds as Adjunctive Strategies for Obesity Management.

Background: Obesity has reached epidemic proportions, affecting over one billion adults worldwide. While incretin-based pharmacotherapies-GLP-1 receptor agonists (semaglutide) and dual GIP/GLP-1 agonists (tirzepatide)-have transformed obesity treatment, their use remains limited by high costs, adverse effects, restricted eligibility, and rapid weight regain following discontinuation. Plant-derived bioactive compounds represent a promising complementary approach to address these gaps. Objective: This narrative review synthesizes clinical trial evidence on plant-based interventions for obesity m

Toxicological Evaluation of Leachate-Preventing Hydrogel Photoinitiators.

Current photoinitiators like (diphenylphosphoryl)(mesityl)methanone (TPO) are being regulatory phased out due to issues related to solubility, cytotoxicity, and leaching. Diazirines, a class of three-membered-ring photoinitiators, have been identified to address limitations of solubility, leaching, and toxicity effects as compared to TPO. Herein, two water-soluble diazirines are exposed to human keratinocyte (Ker-CT) cells for cytotoxicity evaluation. Exposure conditions are limited to initiator concentrations of 0.17-17 mM before (0 J) and after (10 J) UVA irradiation. Diazirine benchmarked t
