OBJECTIVE: Tacrine was used as a tool to examine whether block of inward rectifying potassium current (IK1) represents a mechanism for suppression of arrhythmias induced by ischaemia and reperfusion.
METHODS: Isolated rat hearts (n = 10-12 per group) were subjected to 30 min left regional ischaemia followed by reperfusion with and without tacrine. Rat heart was used to permit delayed rectifier (IK) block to be disregarded in interpretation of results (rat ventricle is deficient in functional IK).
RESULTS: The incidence of ischaemia-induced ventricular fibrillation was reduced from 70% to 42%

PAE can occur as a consequence of heart failure. Depending upon the extent of left ventricular failure, pulmonary edema can vary widely in severity. To anticipate potential health care needs and, ultimately, to treat PAE, the critical care nurse identifies common nursing diagnoses. Once the nurse understands the physiologic or psychological mechanisms for the particular nursing diagnoses, he or she can serve as a reference point to identify expected nursing outcomes.

To assess coronary vasodilator reserve after orthotopic heart transplantation, regional myocardial perfusion was measured with oxygen-15-labeled water and dynamic positron emission tomography in 14 cardiac allograft recipients who were not experiencing rejection and who had no angiographic evidence of epicardial coronary sclerosis 15 to 73 months (mean +/- SD 43 +/- 19) after transplantation (group I). Reconstructive surgery of the mitral valve has been an alternative to mitral valve replacement in patients with mitral regurgitation. Previously, we reported on postoperative left ventricular outflow tract obstruction associated with systolic anterior motion of the anterior mitral leaflet. Sixty modified human umbilical vein (HUV) grafts were used for arterial reconstruction in 48 patients between December 1979 and December 1981. Forty-four patients had limb-threatening ischemia (rest pain or tissue loss) and four had disabling claudication. The utility of combined peripheral vein contrast 2-dimensional echocardiography (2-D echo) and radionuclide shunt detection was evaluated in 25 patients with suspected atrial septal defect (ASD) in whom the diagnosis was confirmed at cardiac catheterization: 14 patients had ASD and 11 had no intracardiac shunt. A ventricular-assist pump was used to support the circulation in eight patients who could not be separated from cardiopulmonary bypass after open-heart operations.
