The Effects of Captioning Errors, Background Noise, and Hearing Loss on Memory for Text-Captioned Speech.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have suggested that the negative effects of acoustic challenge on speech memory can be attenuated with assistive text captions, particularly among older adults with hearing impairment. However, no studies have systematically examined the effects of text-captioning errors, which are common in automated speech recognition (ASR) systems. METHOD: In two experiments, we examined memory for text-captioned speech (with and without background noise) when captions had no errors (control) or had one of three common ASR errors: substitution, deletion, or insertion errors. Phoneme acquisition in French-speaking children with moderate hearing loss.

The current study aims to provide a more precise understanding of phoneme acquisition by children with moderate hearing loss (MHL), since they have been an under-studied population among children with hearing loss. The acquisition of sounds by 15 children with MHL (mean: 3;11 year-old) was compared to that by six younger normal-hearing (YNH) children (mean: 2;8 year-old). All the children were video- and audio-recorded in interaction with one or both parents in two semi-spontaneous tasks, and during a naming task. All their productions were analysed in terms of percentage of accuracy and subst

Recognizing Voices Through a Cochlear Implant: A Systematic Review of Voice Perception, Talker Discrimination, and Talker Identification.

OBJECTIVE: Some cochlear implant (CI) users report having difficulty accessing indexical information in the speech signal, presumably due to limitations in the transmission of fine spectrotemporal cues. The purpose of this review article was to systematically review and evaluate the existing research on talker processing in CI users. Specifically, we reviewed the performance of CI users in three types of talker- and voice-related tasks. We also examined the different factors (such as participant, hearing, and device characteristics) that might influence performance in these specific tasks. DE

Preoperative Reading Efficiency as a Predictor of Adult Cochlear Implant Outcomes.

HYPOTHESES: 1) Scores of reading efficiency (the Test of Word Reading Efficiency, second edition) obtained in adults before cochlear implant surgery will be predictive of speech recognition outcomes 6 months after surgery; and 2) Cochlear implantation will lead to improvements in language processing as measured through reading efficiency from preimplantation to postimplantation. BACKGROUND: Adult cochlear implant (CI) users display remarkable variability in speech recognition outcomes. "Top-down" processing-the use of cognitive resources to make sense of degraded speech-contributes to speech

Selection of Diagnostically Significant Regions of the SLC26A4 Gene Involved in Hearing Loss.

Screening pathogenic variants in the SLC26A4 gene is an important part of molecular genetic testing for hearing loss (HL) since they are one … n pathogenic and likely pathogenic (PLP) variants across the SLC26A4 gene sequence presented in the Deafness Variation Database for the selection of potential diagnostically important parts of this gene. As a result of this bioinformatic analysis, we found that molecular testing ten SLC26A4 exons (4, 6, 10, 11, 13−17 and 19) with flanking intronic regions …

Development of the stria vascularis in the common marmoset, a primate model.

Stria vascularis is a structure that generates potassium gradients in the cochlea, which is vital for hair cells to convert mechanical sound waves into electrical pulses. The precise development of the stria vascularis and subsequent generation of endocochlear potential are thus essential for hearing. Understanding the development of the stria vascularis is valuable for studying hearing loss caused by aging or genetics and designing regenerative therapy. Although inter-species differences have been reported between rodents and humans, most of our current knowledge regarding cochlear developmen

Interventions for adults with deafblindness - an integrative review.

PURPOSE: To compile the current research on interventions for rehabilitation aimed at adults (aged 18-65 years) with deafblindness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in eight databases. An additional manual search was also carried out. A total of 7049 unique references were initially identified, and after screening, 28 original scientific articles were included. The results from these articles were categorized based on limiting consequences of deafblindness: communication, orientation and to move around freely and safely and access to information, as well as to psych

Hearing loss drug discovery and medicinal chemistry: Current status, challenges, and opportunities.

Hearing loss is a severe high unmet need condition affecting more than 1.5 billion people globally. There are no licensed medicines for the prevention, treatment or restoration of hearing. Prosthetic devices, such as hearing aids and cochlear implants, do not restore natural hearing and users struggle with speech in the presence of background noise. Hearing loss drug discovery is immature, and small molecule approaches include repurposing existing drugs, combination therapeutics, late-stage discovery optimisation of known chemotypes for identified molecular targets of interest, phenotypic tiss

Do we need audiogram-based prescriptions? A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing aids are typically programmed using the individual's audiometric thresholds and verified using real-ear measures. Developments in technology have resulted in a new category of direct-to-consumer devices, which are not necessarily programmed using the individual's audiometric thresholds. This review aimed to identify whether programming hearing aids using the individual's validated audiogram-based prescription, and verified using real-ear measures, results in better outcomes for adults with hearing loss. DESIGN: The review was registered in PROSPERO and reported in accordanc

Personalization of Hearing Aid Fitting Based on Adaptive Dynamic Range Optimization.

Adaptive dynamic range optimization (ADRO) is a hearing aid fitting rationale which involves adjusting the gains in a number of frequency bands by using a series of rules. The rules reflect the comparison of the estimated percentile occurrences of the sound levels with the audibility and comfort hearing levels of a person suffering from hearing loss. In the study reported in this paper, a previously developed machine learning method was utilized to personalize the ADRO fitting in order to provide an improved hearing experience as compared to the standard ADRO hearing aid fitting. The personali

Manipulating the blood labyrinth barrier with mannitol to prevent cisplatin-induced hearing loss.

Cisplatin, a chemotherapeutic medication, remains in the cochlea indefinitely, causing permanent hearing loss. Mannitol, a diuretic medication, has been shown to increase the permeability of the blood labyrinth barrier (BLB). We hypothesize that mannitol increases the permeability of the BLB and therefore increases the rate of entry and egression of cisplatin and entry of otoprotective agents. Rats treated with cisplatin (t = 0) were given mannitol at either t = 0, t = 6 or t = 0,6 h. Another group of rats were treated with cisplatin with mannitol at 0 h and NAC/STS with and without mannitol a

Improving genetic diagnosis by disease-specific, ACMG/AMP variant interpretation guidelines for hearing loss.

The 2018 Hearing Loss Expert Panel (HL-EP)-specific guidelines specified from the universal 2015 ACMG/AMP guidelines are proposed to be used in genetic HL, which prompted this study. A genetic HL cohort comprising 135 unrelated probands with available exome sequencing data was established. Overall, 169 variants were prioritized as candidates and interpreted using the 2015 ACMG/AMP and 2018 HL-EP guidelines. Changes in rule application and variant classification between the guidelines were compared. The concordance rate of variant classification of each variant between the guidelines was 71.60%

Does Cochlear Implantation Affect Openness-to-Experience in Profound Postlingual Hearing Loss?

Recent studies suggest that hearing loss in postlingually deafened adults may be associated with lowered levels of the personality factor Openness to experience. This study investigated whether cochlear implantation in postlingually deafened adults raises the level of Openness to experience. Fifty-five postlingually deafened adults (mean age: 63 years) were assessed with the Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness-Five-Factor-Inventory (NEO-FFI), a questionnaire capturing the five personality factors Extraversion, Openness to experience, Neuroticism, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. The Effect of Background Noise on Immediate Free Recall of Words in Younger and Older Listeners with Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Auditory working memory is a crucial factor for complex cognitive tasks such as speech-in-noise understanding because speech communication in noise engages multiple auditory and cognitive capacities to encode, store, and retrieve information. An immediate free recall task of words has been used frequently as a measure of auditory working memory capacity. PURPOSE: The present study investigated performance on the immediate free recall of words in quiet and noisy conditions for hearing-impaired listeners. RESEARCH DESIGN: Fifty hearing-impaired listeners (30 younger and 20 older) p

The noncoding genome and hearing loss.

The age of sequencing has provided unprecedented insights into the human genome. The coding region of the genome comprises nearly 20,000 genes, of which approximately 4000 are associated with human disease. Beyond the protein-coding genome, which accounts for only 3% of the genome, lies a vast pool of regulatory elements in the form of promoters, enhancers, RNA species, and other intricate elements. These features undoubtably influence human health and disease, and as a result, a great deal of effort is currently being invested in deciphering their identity and mechanism. While a paucity of ma
