The Introduction of a BaTiO3 Polarized Coating as an Interface Modification Strategy for Zinc-Ion Batteries: A Theoretical Study.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have become a promising and cost-effective alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to their low cost, high energy, and high safety. However, dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs), and corrosion significantly restrict the performance and scalability of AZIBs. We propose the introduction of a BaTiO3 (BTO) piezoelectric polarized coating as an interface modification strategy for ZIBs. The low surface energy of the BTO (110) crystal plane ensures its thermodynamic preference during crystal growth in experimental processes and exhibits very low rea

Morphological alterations of the pyramidal and stellate cells of the visual cortex in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a severe brain disorder characterized by certain types of delusion, hallucination and thought disorder. Studies have revealed impaired synaptic plasticity and reduced gamma-aminobutyric acid levels of the visual cortex in patients with schizophrenia. While previous work established a critical role for interneurons and cortical connectivity in the generation of hallucinations, the present study set out to examine the morphology of pyramidal cells and interneurons from layers 3 and 4 in the primary visual cortex from schizophrenic brains and to identify any dendritic and spinal

Biologics for psoriasis: What is new?

Etiology of psoriasis is unclear but environmental, genetic, and immune factors act significant roles in the pathogenesis of this disease. Helper T cells (TH), plasmoid, and dermal dendritic cells play a prominent role in the development of classical psoriatic lesions. Interleukin stimulation is another important process in the pathogenesis of the disease that directly influences keratinocytes and leading to the formation of psoriatic pattern in the skin. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) α which releases from keratinocytes activates dendritic cells in the early stages of complex pathogenesis of pso

How tropomyosin regulates lamellipodial actin-based motility: a combined biochemical and reconstituted motility approach.

At the leading edge of migrating cells, protrusive forces are developed by the assembly of actin filaments organised in a lamellipodial dendritic array at the front and a more distal lamellar linear array. Whether these two arrays are distinct or functionally linked and how they contribute to cell migration is an open issue. Tropomyosin severely inhibits lamellipodium formation and facilitates the lamellar array while enhancing migration, by a mechanism that is not understood. Here we show that the complex in vivo effects of tropomyosin are recapitulated in the reconstituted propulsion of neur

[Metabolic structures of the blood serum--markers of acute pancreatitis].

The goal of the study was to reveal the meaning of metabolic structures of the blood serum (BS) in the diagnostics of acute pancreatitis (AP). Along with standard methods of examination, cystalloscopical examination of the BS was conducted for 46 patients with AP. The BS of 22 healthy people was used as control. In this group, the structure of BS had a form of threadlike bipalmate crystals. Metabolic structures of BS in patients with AP were characterized by signs of enzymatic dysfunctions: hyperamylasemia was presented in the form of subparallel lamellae, hypertrypsinaemia - in the form of a

Depletion of host Langerhans cells before transplantation of donor alloreactive T cells prevents skin graft-versus-host disease.

Skin is the most commonly affected organ in graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). To explore the role of Langerhans cells in GVHD, the principal dendritic cells of the skin, we studied the fate of these cells in mice transplanted with allogeneic bone marrow. In contrast to other dendritic cells, host Langerhans cells were replaced by donor Langerhans cells only when donor T cells were administered along with bone marrow, and the extent of Langerhans cell chimerism correlated with the dose of donor T cells injected. Donor T cells depleted host Langerhans cells through a Fas-dependent pathway and in

Pyramidal cells of the frontal lobe: all the more spinous to think with.

The basal dendritic arbors of pyramidal cells in prefrontal areas 10, 11, and 12 of the macaque monkey were revealed by intracellular injection in fixed, flat-mounted, cortical slices. The size, number of branches, and spine density of the basal dendrites were quantified and compared with those of pyramidal cells in the occipital, parietal, and temporal lobes. These analyses revealed that cells in the frontal lobe were significantly more spinous than those in the other lobes, having as many as 16 times more spines than cells in the primary visual area (V1), four times more those in area 7a, an…

The tissue distribution of factor XIIIa positive cells.

Factor XIIIa has previously been used to identify a subgroup of dermal dendritic cells which co-express class II MHC antigens, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and lymphocyte function associated antigen-1 (LFA-1), leading to the suggestion that they play a central role in skin immune responses. To examine whether these cells may also be important constituents of other organs we have performed an immunohistochemical survey of normal tissue to identify the distribution of this factor XIIIa positive subgroup of dendritic cells in humans. Routine tissue sections from a range of organs we

Constitution of the greater splanchnic nerve in the rat.

The greater splanchnic nerve originating from the sympathetic ganglia between the 10th and 12th ribs on the dorsal thoracic wall passes through the diaphragm between its medial and lateral erura, to form the celiac plexus around the celiac trunk and superior mesenteric artery in the abdominal cavity. The nerve consists of about 10,000 of nerve fibers and of 25,000 of ganglion cells in its whole length of 2.5 cm; nerve fibers can be divided into myelinated fibers, accounting for less than 6% of total numbers, and unmyelinated fibers, which amount to more 90%. Special attention was not paid to t

GIAnT: a Glutamate Imaging Analysis Toolbox.

Recent advances in fluorescent indicators and optical microscopy now enable in vivo synaptic imaging of glutamate, which transmits the majority of signals between neurons in the brain. Extracting fluorescence signals from these recordings is complicated by the minuscule scale and dense clustering of synapses on dendrites, as well as brain motion in behaving animals. Here we present the Glutamate Imaging Analysis Toolbox (GIAnT), a set of automated tools for glutamate imaging data that corrects sample motion, identifies active synapses with super-resolution precision, and extracts synaptic fluo…

CBLN2 promoter enables genetic access to wide-field neurons of the tree shrew superior colliculus.

Wide-field (WF) neurons of the tectopulvinar pathway integrate retinal and cortical inputs via large dendritic arbors crucial for rapid visual motion detection. Previous studies identified potential marker genes for mouse WF neurons. Here, we validate CBLN2 as a molecular marker of the tree shrew WF neurons and construct AAVs that exploit CBLN2 promoter to selectively target WF neurons across species. Using intersectional genetics in the tree shrew, we show that WF neuron dendrites receive a distinct pattern of VGluT1+ and VGluT2+ inputs based on their distance from the cell body in the dorsov…

Atypical Cadherin Fat2 is Involved in Axogenesis of Cerebellar Granule Cells in Zebrafish.

Fat2 is an atypical cadherin with a large extracellular domain containing multiple cadherin repeats. Although members of the Fat family have been implicated in organ development, the role of Fat2 in neural development remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the function of Fat2 in zebrafish, focusing on its involvement in the development of cerebellar granule cells. Granule cells in the rostromedial cerebellum project their axons, known as parallel fibers, to Purkinje cell dendrites. In contrast, granule cells in the caudolateral cerebellum project their axons to Purkinje cells and fu…

Phagocytosis-driven neurodegeneration through opposing roles of an ABC transporter in neurons and phagocytes.

Lipid homeostasis is critical to neuronal survival. ATP-binding cassette A (ABCA) proteins are lipid transporters associated with neurodegenerative diseases. How ABCA transporters regulate lipid homeostasis in neurodegeneration is an outstanding question. Here we report that the Drosophila ABCA protein engulfment ABC transporter in the ovary (Eato) regulates phagocytosis-dependent neurodegeneration by playing opposing roles in neurons and phagocytes: In neurons, Eato prevents dendrites and axons from being attacked by neighboring phagocytes; in phagocytes, Eato sensitizes the cell for detectin…

Microtubule-dependent cell polarity regulates skin-resident macrophage phagocytosis and directed cell migration.

Immune cells rapidly respond to tissue damage through dynamic properties of the cytoskeleton. How microtubules control immune cell functions during injury responses remains poorly understood. Within skin, tissue-resident macrophages known as Langerhans cells use dynamic dendrites to surveil the epidermis for damage and migrate through a densely packed epithelium to wounds. Here, we use Langerhans cells within the adult zebrafish epidermis as a model to investigate roles for microtubules in immune cell tissue surveillance, phagocytosis, and directed migration. HSV-1 inhibits melanogenesis of PIG1 cells through downregulation of VN1R5/ERK pathway.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is an ubiquitous pathogen that can infect humans through skin or mucous regions. This study was to explore the effects and underlying mechanism of HSV-1 as examined within the human epidermal melanocyte cell line, PIG1. Our results showed that following HSV-1 infection, PIG1 cells shrank and acquired a rounded shape, while the numbers and lengths of their dendrites decreased and melanogenesis was inhibited. Meanwhile, the HSV-1 receptors (nectin-1, herpes virus entry mediator, paired immunoglobulin-like type 2 receptor alpha) and phospho-extracellular signal…

Light-evoked activity and BDNF regulate mitochondrial dynamics and mitochondrial localized translation in CNS axons.

Mitochondria coordinate well-described maintenance functions within neuronal axons and dendrites. However, less is known about how mitochondria are regulated during axon development and maturation. Here, we demonstrate that within the developing visual system, retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons in the retina and optic nerve exhibit increases in mitochondria size, number, and total area in vivo. Our findings indicate that these developmental changes in mitochondria are driven by neuronal activity associated with eye opening and by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). These events occur in c…

Molecular mechanism establishing the OFF pathway in vision.

Parallel ON and OFF (positive- and negative-contrast) pathways fundamental to vision arise at the complex synapse of cone photoreceptors. Cone pedicles form spatially segregated functionally opposite connections with ON and OFF bipolar cells. Here, we discover that mammalian cones express LRFN2, a cell-adhesion molecule, which localizes to the pedicle base. LRFN2 stabilizes basal contacts between cone pedicles and OFF bipolar cell dendrites to guide pathway-specific partner choices, encompassing multiple cell types. In addition, LRFN2 trans-synaptically organizes glutamate receptor clusters, d…
